Inside of the Lobster Trap Tree.
The first one I saw in 2012 was amazing and it gets better every year! From the days of stacked traps and colored lights we now have a wider base with doorways opening the inside with cantilevered traps opening up the center of the tree for a great view from inside, a look at the dome and viewing a light show of Christmas Colors on the floor. (The lightshow with its colored moving dots of light brought back memories of college…but that’s another story!) The stack is tighter and now the traps are color coordinated Yellow and Green by level and the colored lights have given way to energy efficient white LEDs. Â The yearly engineering advances allow for more and more hand painted buoys from the kids at Art Haven. Hard to imagine anything more spirit lifting than just walking past the tree, not to mention spending some time in it and around! I met two photographers who were waiting for the light to go down and then were going from Gloucester to Rockport, ME and Portland to capture some other trap trees. Their take? Others might be a little taller but none are better than Gloucester’s tree!
The Wounded Warrior race/walk got off today without a hitch, despite the weather. Cloudy and windy with a bit of drizzle thrown into the mix.
Pictures from last nights’ reception at Bank Gloucester for the unveiling of renowned artist Ken Knowles painting “Schooner Race” commissioned by Bank Gloucester. A smaller version of the painting was auctioned off by auctioneer Senator Tarr (clearly his second calling!) with proceeds donated to Wellspring.
Some pictures from last nights 5th Annual Overdose Vigil. A time to remember those lost and to highlight the epidemic heroin addiction has become; an issue Gloucester has become a widely recognized leader for coordinating police to get help for addicts, not arrests. Speakers told about their loss, experience and hope that one day there will be no need for a vigil. With candles lit, the names of all family and friends lost was read to close out the evening.
A little of everything at the Magnolia Farmers Market, dancing, singing, vegetables and steak sauce… Yes, I bought steak sauce.
The kinetic sculptures of Theo Jansen, Strandbeests, were on display at Crane Beach Saturday morning. The place was jammed! Fascinating sculptures, machines, beings or whatever you might call them. they walked the beach powered by the wind. The event was a lead up outdoor show for the exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in September.
The Manchester Essex Mariners and the Rowley Rams squared off Saturday afternoon in game one of their best of 5 championship series. Manchester-Essex Mariners took control early and won the opener 9-3. Rory Gentile got the win and Mike Cain went deep for the game’s only home run.
History
Founded in 1929, The Intertown Twilight League is the oldest active amateur baseball league in the country, and is recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame as such.

Game 2 of the series is played Sunday at 4:00PM in Rowley with Game 3 on Wednesday at 5:30PM back at Memorial Field in Essex.

Great day for the races! As has been the case recently, the Canadian team was too strong registering wins in the mixed, Juniors, Masters and Open races, while the USA team’s Women had a big win and put the team on the board. The Masters Race was highlighted by the boats coming together after the start, but after getting oars back in the right places went on to complete their race. The Open Race.. WOW! The win was decided at the finish line!
Well June 9th… it’s still a bit cold in Little River. Notice 2 out of 3 are fully clothed and none of them seem to be able to go below the surface…
Until the fog burned off the International Dory Eliminations race directions were going to be simple: Â “If you see Hammond Castle, turn around…”
