Hi Joey,

During two Trails and Sails weekends and the last Block Party, the Committee for the Arts (CFTA ) was pleased to participate and spread awareness about municipal art.  One event: during the block party we were at Main and Parsons, near a very busy Markouk booth (always busy at Cape Ann Farmers Market, too), fried dough and candy truck (not just kids buying!), Dress Code’s charmingly illuminated booth, and Joe Ciolino’s. What a gorgeous night! We spoke with dozens of folks including the group of twenty youth from Ocean Classroom en route from Maine to Puerto Rico with a stop in Gloucester and a night out downtown. FOB Ann Kennedy Shares About Meatloaf and Turkeys

Good morning, Kim.  I so enjoy your GMG posts and have been meaning to send a quick email.  Your great meatloaf post really gave me a chuckle–in the fondest way!  Recently I read one of my mother’s letters in which she had made a 6 lb. meatloaf for a PTA supper long ago, of course.  My brother and I didn’t like meatloaf and never really learned to either.   One night, she was constructing a very, very large stuffed meatloaf that was to be formed into a long log of sorts.  It didn’t fit in the pan and so she curved it until it fit.  My brother and I wandered into the kitchen to discover this awful looking thing and decided to help it out.  We sliced a pimento stuffed green olive to make 2 eyes, and added toothpicks for antennae, making it look like a giant, mythical caterpillar.  Quite an ugly thing!  Anyway, when Mom discovered it we all had a good chuckle and we were ordered out of the kitchen–the first time in our lives that ever happened:-)

I loved your recent turkey photo.  When I travel across the state via Amtrak (the slow route), the autumn fields are full of flocks of wild turkeys, seeking corn leftover from the harvest.  The train eventually travels along the Missouri River, and sometimes I’ll see a turkey at the river’s edge.

I hope you enjoy this marvelous season, and I look forward to your new and interesting posts.  By the way, I might enjoy your meatloaf since it includes bacon:-)

While talking with Thom Falzarano the other day, he was saying how much he was enjoying photographing up in New Hampshire where there was rusted old farm equipment and grazing horses to photograph.  Although these are grazing donkeys, not horses (I know my barn animals) – that is a cool old rusted piece of farm equipment, and they are right here in Gloucester.  Does anyone know where?

Built in 1658, the Babson Cooperage is considered to be the first factory on Cape Ann. James Babson made barrels that were filled with fish and shipped to England, and other places around the world. I think the plaque tells it all: JAMES BABSON FARM “GRANTED BY SPECIAL TOWN ACT DECEMBER 23, 1658 JAMES AND HIS MOTHER, ISABEL, WERE THE FIRST BABSONS TO REACH AMERICA, ARRIVING IN 1632. JAMES’ FATHER DIED ON SHIPBOARD WHILE CROSSING. TOWN RECORDS SHOW THAT ISABEL WAS A VERY ACTIVE KINDLY AND BELOVED MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY. SHE DIED IN 1661. JAMES WAS A COOPER WHO MADE BARRELS, ETC. FROM LUMBER OBTAINED FROM THE ADJOINING MILL ON CAPE POND BROOK. HE MARRIED ELINOR HILL AND THEY HAD TEN CHILDREN. The Gloucester Writers Center presents Helen Fremont, the author of the national best selling memoir After Long Silence on October 30th, 7:30 p.m. at 126 East Main St. In addition to being a memoirist she is also a public defender in Boston. She will answer questions and dialogue with the audience after her talk A Perspective- Point of View in Memoir.

Helen and her sister grew up Roman Catholic, and it was not until she was in her thirties, that they discovered that their parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors. The book Traces the stories of her parents’ lives, including her father’s years as a political prisoner in the Siberian Gulag, and her aunt’s marriage to an Italian Count, who was instrumental in saving her mother’s life. Other works of fiction and non-fiction have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including 1994: The O. Henry Awards, Ploughshares, and The Harvard Review. She is currently working on her second memoir focusing on her and her sister’s lives, and how the trauma of one generation is expressed in the next.

The Gloucester Writers Center was founded to celebrate, preserve, and promote Gloucester’s rich literary legacy and to create space in the community for the voices of people of all ages and backgrounds to be heard through writing, dialogue, and the artistic process. Please join us for a day of sunshine, fresh air, friends, family, food and a celebration dedicated to all we love to fight and to raise money to help The American Cancer Society through the Relay For Life and Family Ties, Inc.; to help individuals and families financially; and to find cures to end cancer.  We are hosting an all-day event of golf, food, awards, silent and live auctions for all to enjoy with the proceeds going to our foundation and to Relay For Life fundraising efforts.

Family Ties, Inc. is a Massachusetts Non-Profit Corporation that was established to help families affected by cancer.  Family Ties, Inc. works with Relay for Life which is a 501(c)(3) company to help as many as we can in the fight against cancer.  In 1985, Charles “Chucky” Pratt was diagnosed with cancer as a 17 year old high school student.  Chucky lost his battle with cancer after four years and missed out on so many of life’s wonderful moments. Family Ties was a Relay for Life team created by Erin “Pratt” Avila to honor her brother and to bring her family together, celebrate him and fight for those who need our help. 

Over the past 8 years our family has raised over $100,000.00 as a part of the Relay for Life in Cape Ann, we have won several awards as a team due to our fundraising efforts and have led the fund raising event as top fundraisers.  We have now turned this team into a foundation as our passion is to raise money to help families who are battling cancer and to help invest in cures supporting The American Cancer Society through the Cape Ann Relay For life.  Join us with your family and friends to help us in the fight against cancer.
