Geoffrey Bayliss’s recent work includes large collaged work and papier-mâché sculptures which lend themselves to the viewer’s interpretation. Playful, imaginative, strange, or referential of classical ruins, the collages and sculptures are active and energetic. Bayliss is not new to collage; but his exploration of papier-mâché is an exciting direction. The use of papier-mâché goes as far back as 200 AD with the Chinese Han dynasty; in Europe, it was introduced c.1725 as an alternative to plaster or carved wood in architecture. Bayliss earned a degree in architecture from Columbia University; his current interest in the medium of papier-mâché aligns well with his understanding of architectural elements and flourishes.
About the artist.
Geoffrey Bayliss, a native of Gloucester, holds a BA in architecture from Columbia University. He has studied with artist Celia Eldridge, sculptor John Bozarth, printmaker Coco Berkman, and artist Charlotte Roberts. His work is held in numerous private collections in the US. This is the artist’s 4th solo show with Jane Deering Gallery. A few words from the artist: ’Making art has been my life … My impulse to create doesn’t diminish … It grows and develops infinitely.’ — Geoffrey Bayliss, July 2022
Greetings all. I hope that you are all keeping safe and healthy.
We are planning on having our annual spring art show and hope that you will sign up. There are a few changes due to Covid. We can not host the opening and closing receptions because we can not have large groups in the room. (Fingers crossed that we can have group receptions by the time we get to the fall art show!) We are extending the length of the exhibit to 6 weeks to allow for plenty of time for visitors to come by in small numbers. Depending on Covid status, we may offer some weekend hours towards the end of the 6 weeks. If there is a shutdown again, we will just extend the exhibit like last year …. Also, no theme this year. Show what you want and change it out as often as you like. Feel free to forward the sign up info to other artists you may know.
Please send in your registration and check by Feb 14 so I can let those who want 2 panels know if there are any available. I’m looking forward to filling the hall with beauty again. It cheers us up so much!

Last Chance! These must see 2019 shows are closing soon: Don’t miss ICA Watershed Purple (installation view above) closing September 2; DeCordova New England Biennial and the Provincetown Art Association & Museum’s 1945 Chaim Gross exhibition close September 15; and catch Renoir at the Clark before it’s gone September 22nd.
A few of the listed upcoming exhibitions to note: the NEW building and exhibits at PEM are opening September 2019; Homer at the Beach is on display at Cape Ann Museum thru December 1 (and catch a Richard Ormond lecture on John Singer Sargent’s Charcoals Sept.28 at Cape Ann Museum (ahead of the Morgan exhibition opening October); three new shows opening at MFA; Gordon Parks at Addison; and Alma Thomas at Smith. A Seuss-focused experience was pronounced destined for Boston, ahead of its TBD venue, by the LA entertainment company co-founders. Some shows I’ve already visited and may write about, mostly from a dealer’s perspective as that is my background. Exhibition trends continue to evolve and reveal new directions. A few patterns I see in the exhibition titles: what’s annointed for display and how it’s contextualized (corrective labels); immersive exhibits; revisiting colonial methodologies and themes; major solo surveys; women artists (and this upcoming season boost underscoring womens’ suffrage and 100th anniversary of the ratification of women’s right to vote); illustration; environment; and issues of humanity and migration. The list is illustrated with images of the sites. All photographs mine unless otherwise noted. Right click or hover to see info; click to enlarge. – Catherine Ryan

Note to Greenway (see photo notes below): food trucks by the stop should be relocated to other food truck areas (and maybe one tree) to optimize and welcome sight line to the Greenway and public spaces from streets, sidewalk, and South Station. There are pauses elsewhere along the lattice park links, and a generous approach past the wine bar. The temporary commissioned mural could extend verso (or invite a second artist) so that the approach from Zakim Bridge/RT1/93North is as exciting as the approach from Cape Cod.

The Greenway packs a lot of punch in a compressed area; its lattice of dynamic public spaces and quiet passages are an easy stroll into the North End or along the HarborWalk to the ICA, roughly similar in size and feel as walking Battery Park and Hudson River Park in New York City.

This is one of the paintings in Erin Luman’s upcoming show. It’s called “Thirty Six.”
The Jane Deering Gallery will host a month-long exhibition of the work of Gloucester artist Erin Luman, whose new paintings focus on the cottages of Long Beach in Gloucester. Luman’s previous work explored the power lines, buildings and rooftops of downtown Gloucester (You prolly read about that one on Good Morning Gloucester here), and now she’s turned her view toward the beach to make sure the cottages that have served as the backdrop of generations of family vacations are remembered. The opening reception will be held this Saturday June 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Jane Deering Gallery is at 19 Pleasant Street in Gloucester.

October 30 – November 23, 2014, Thursday-Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM
Public Reception Saturday, November 1, 4:00 – 6:00 PM
Four artists with strong bodies of work that display personal themes and expression that show through their different media, come together for an exhibition that lives up to the name, “Dimensions” from Oct. 30 to Nov 23, 2014, Thursday-Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM. at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson St, Gloucester, MA. The four artists, Christy Park, Delphine Zohn, Rosella Sagall, and Rochell Zohn are all exhibiting Massachusetts artists.
Christy Park’s work for this show is of large abstracted animals. These are images that she has returned to throughout her career. She says of the pieces, “They seem to be totemic, almost dreamlike and seem to follow me. They have surfaced throughout my career, even when I lived and worked in New York City.”
Delphine Zohn is an expressionist painter. Her basic subject is the human form and face. She is well known for portraiture and is often working on commissions for portraits. However, various other themes weave through her work and like most painters she find inspiration for paintings in many varied places.
Several pieces by Rosella Sagall in this show are a departure from her usual work. These are large drawings of colonial women that began with an idea about depicting the 13 women who were later hanged in Salem. She wanted to draw large images and was at the same time thinking about the “trials” from Salem Village. These are side by side with much smaller tighter drawings.
Rochelle Zohn is a fiber artist. Some of her pieces were created in response to her son’s struggle with cancer. The beauty and color of these works, made from vintage kimono pieces, belie the somberness of the theme. More playful in nature are structures made from coffee filters and newspaper.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Christy Park studied painting at the Art Students’ League in New York City. For her MFA she worked with film, and her doctoral work was an analysis of video art. She has exhibited nationally, and was one of the founders of the 55 Mercer St. Gallery in New York. She is professor emerita at the Massachusetts College of Art and resides in Gloucester.
Rosella Park Sagall is an artist, designer, and educator from the mid-west who has lived in New England for over 30 years. She received a BFA in printmaking from Ohio State University. She returned and did two years of post-graduate work in graphic design in the Industrial Design Department at OSU. She worked as a designer in Columbus and Toledo, Ohio and Bangor, Maine. She also holds an MA in Museum Education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
Delphine Zohn has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and has exhibited in group and solo shows in New England. She was a member of the Depot Square Gallery in Lexington, and her work may be seen in venues throughout the Boston area.
Rochelle Zohn is an established fiber artist living in Waltham. Her most recent Series of work was exhibited in “Encounters with Cancer” for survivors and caretakers, at the Brush Gallery in Lowell. She is well known for her classes and workshops in knitting and felting.
The public is invited to the reception for the artists on Saturday, November 1, 4:00 – 6:00 pm

The structure is now being demolished to make way for a new, smaller power plant. The project was funded by Footprint Power.
This will be fourth year for the joint Montserrat-Endicott show at Rocky Neck, formerly held on a weekend at the Goetemann Residency Studio and now expanded to a four-week exhibition at the Cultural Center.
The exhibition will include a variety of media including painting, photography, book arts, sculpture, illustration, graphic design, and mixed media, and will be on both floors of the Rocky Neck Cultural Center.
Mark Towner, Dean for the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Endicott College states, ““There is a long history of exhibiting art by students alongside their professors’ art. The process reveals interesting patterns of media, style, and subject. The presentation of art created by individuals from different institutions, most often occurs in the form of an open competition.
“In the spirit of unity and celebration, this exhibition at Rocky Neck Cultural Center integrates both approaches. The end result provides multiple actions and dynamic reactions, to form a more complex picture: A synthesis most worthy of examination and the titling of this exhibit.”
Montserrat College of Art President Steve Immerman said he is “Montserrat values its collaboration with the creative community on Cape Ann, and especially the Rocky Neck Art Colony. We are so pleased to be able to showcase the work of our talented faculty and students with a larger audience.”

The opening of Translucenceat Flatrocks Gallery Friday night was extremely well attended, but not at all surprising for such an excellent show and gallery space. For us on this side of Cape Ann, it may seem a little out of the way, but it is well worth the trip over to Lanesville to see it. Gloucester’s art scene is just killing it!
