Garden Tour Tonight at Willowdale Estate!

Please join me tonight for a tour of the butterfly gardens I designed for Willowdale Estate. Come experience a taste of Briar’s gracious hospitality and enjoy refreshments served in the conservatory. I stopped by the gardens yesterday and the spring blooms are at their peak and simply spectacular this year–not only the tulips but many natives as well, including Eastern Redbud, Cornus florida, and Carolina Silverbell. I will also be showing several of my short films. The band who popularized country-rock and influenced the Eagles is coming to Shalin Liu on Friday and we were lucky enough to get Rusty Young, one of the band’s founders on the phone to talk about their new music and Friday’s show.

Local legend Allen Estes interviewed Rusty by phone and we’ve got the podcast of that interview right here.

World Organ Day 2013 at St. Ann’s Church

A week ago today was World Organ Day!  Althout it is an initiative of Notre Dame de Paris, it was celebrated around the world with more than 850 organ concerts.  Fr. John Kiley, pastor of Holy Family Parish, joined in with a concert here in Gloucester at St. Ann’s Church (a worship site of Holy Family Parish).

Organ concert smallAlthough St. Ann’s has a real pipe organ, it is in sore need of work, and the parish does not have the funds for the organ’s restoration.  So, Fr. Kiley gave the concert on the church’s electric organ instead. It sounds nice, but it doesn’t quite measure up to the real pipe organ.  After the concert, Fr. Kiley played one verse of a popular hymn using some of the registers on the old pipe organ that still work more or less well, and the difference was notable.

Hi Joey,

I wrote this story for WickedLocal.com and it ran last week in the Amesbury News. I was hoping it might run in Gloucester, too. It is about young Zack Teal who is a cremate on the schooner Ardelle but also lives in Essex in summer. He is building the whaleboat at Lowells boatshop but also was the young lad who helped build the schooner Ardelle. He is off to Maine Maritime this fall after graduation. TRIBUTE TO JACKIE HARDY SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 22

Jackie Hardy will be honored at a reception on June 22, 2013, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Gloucester House restaurant. Ms. Hardy represents Bay View, Annisquam, and Lanesville on the City Council and serves as Council president. The proceeds from this event will be donated to the new Gloucester Dog Park.

The event will feature hors d’oeuvres and a program led by City Councilor Bruce Tobey. Tickets are $100 and can be obtained from Mr. Tobey, 978-968-8100, or from Dick Wilson, 978-525-3293. Checks should be made payable to the Gloucester Fund; please write in the memo line “Jackie Hardy/Dog Park.”
