Cape Ann Sea Creatures is a February school vacation clay class for children and/or adults with Rockport potter Susan Hershey.  It’s a three-part series on Monday, February 18th, Wednesday, February 20th and Friday, February 22nd from 2 to 5 p.m.  at the Opportunity Center at Pond View Village in Gloucester. Limited to 24 students. To reserve a spot, contact Stacy Randell at 978-281-8181, ext. 141 or srandell@thecalebgroup.org . A $5 donation for the series is requested, but not required.  This program is supported in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

There’s no doubt that growing up in today’s world is challenging and perhaps it’s even more challenging to be a parent of a child going through adolescence. O’Maley Innovation Middle School is committed to doing all it can guide both young and old through this important phase of life. With that in mind, we have scheduled two free workshops for parents.

The first one will be held on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in our library. The title of this workshop is “Growing up Male in America”. Some of the topics covered will be: The Boy Code, Boys and Aggression, The Boys Inner Life (a focus on the emotional life of boys), Boys and Schooling, Parent Relationships and Changing into Men.

The second workshop will be held the following Tuesday, February 5th, also from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This workshop is entitled, “Growing up Female in America”. Some of the topics of this session include: The Girl Code, Girls and the Media, Girls and Schooling, Parent Relationships and a segment called Daughters of the Revolution (a look at the future for girls).

The presenter is Joann Stemmerman. She is an expert in gender as it relates to adolescents. Although now working in the private sector, she has held faculty positions at Harvard University and the University of New Hampshire. Please join us for these informative workshops. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers and sharing of common experiences.

What are your duties at your job and do you use twitter as a tool for your job?

Owner, publisher, graphic designer, technologist, photographer, and more!  Twitter is an integral part of how we deliver information. We do not really use it socially, i.e. messaging back and forth. It’s more about spreading the word for us. We keep a steady flow of tweets going throughout the week.

Why do you think you are follow worthy on Twitter?

· Our tweets are mostly readable and understandable.

· Our tweets deliver a valid piece of information that our readers can actually use.

· 95% of our tweets are not cluttered with chatter, and don’t add to it.

What types of tweets or twitter user drive you up a wall?

Tweeting is a hard skill for some people to learn, and a lot of people are trying to learn it, so the Twitterverse is full of chatter and tweets that really don’t mean or say anything at all. The reason you only have 140 characters is because it forces you to think it through before you make your point. Imagine that, you have to think before you type! Why would somebody tweet, ‘LOL’ or ‘ROFLMAO’? Does that even qualify as a tweet? It’s been done ad nauseum, contributes nothing to the conversation, and literally says nothing…  I suppose it’s a necessary evil for people who need to learn the platform, though.

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

Shrimp season started today (Wednesday 1/23). Kathy stopped by and talked with Paul Movalli (VP Purchasing) at Intershell about the schedule. He says it’s too cold and windy to go out the next few days, the shrimp will freeze!. So by next week we should have some shrimp pictures for this blog. The season will last only a few weeks, because quotas are down.

In the meantime, here’s a picture Kathy shot on their dock. Paul writes, “The big dude is Frank Davillas an X state trooper who is now our Dock Master. The other is long time fisherman and now lobsterman Al Mineo. His boat is the Web. He’s one of the nicest guys your ever going to meet other than myself and Joey C”.

If you think it’s cold here, ask Kathy what it’s like to be out ice fishing in -24 degree wind chill and 50 mph winds across a frozen lake. A few days ago she shot these pictures in Minnesota. The ridiculously slick surface (crampons didn’t make much of a difference) and the high winds pinned her against the Jeep transportation in order to take a few snaps, camera freezing every few shots.

But Kathy says when they get the propane heaters going, it gets quite comfortable inside. Her family members suggest hot chocolate w/peppermint schnapps, a radio and a deck of cards while waiting for bites. They catch Walleye, Northern, Croppies, Sunfish and Perch. Ice thickness ranged from fourteen to twenty inches.
