You see the building that says Fish Market? That is the building where the fire was last week that the Gloucester Fire department quickly snuffed out. Look at Jay Albert’s pictures here from the scene His pictures are from the back of the building which is now a wood furniture maker.
Look at the stern of the the big schooner in the middle of the photo. off the stern is The Phyllis A. The oldest gillnetter in Gloucester and undergoing a major restoration project.

That fish market was run by John Alexander,Sr and his wife. The piers in the background where the schooner and Phyllis A are mored were owned by Booth Fisheries Co. in 1940, Taken over by Bill Robinson of Ipswich and name changed to Beacon Marine Basin. During WW-2 they built small Landing Craft (LCI’s) in Ipswich and installed the engins at Beacon Marine. After WW-2, the Alexanders purchased the Beacon Marine Basin from Robinson and it is still operated by the family, I believe.
Nice to see the photo spread on the Phyllis A. We visited the Friends of the Phyllis A. when in Gloucester July 7 for the Dahlmer Family Reunion..
