An evening of song at the Annie

Last night we had our weekly Wednesday night singing session at the Annie. It’s very informal and spontaneous; anyone who wants to show up takes a seat in our circle of chairs in the art parlor, and we go around taking turns singing (and/or playing acoustic instruments).   The group will often join in the chorus if it is a well-known song.   It’s a very open atmosphere; music of pretty much any genre, and singers any level of talent or experience (from people who usually only sing in the shower, to music professionals), are welcome. People are also welcome to come if they just want to listen.

We’ve been averaging between 28,000 on an extremely slow sunny weekend day when everyone is outdoors and away from their work computers and 40,000 during the work week.  Most days during the week it’s around 35,000 nowadays.

Hey Joey-

Kay Ellis and I had a great time Monday night at the Boston Concierge trade show at the Park Plaza Castle connecting with all the hotel Concierges who send visitors out to have fun and adventures. We were there to let them know all the fabulous things to do and eat here, and that we’re just a short car or train ride away from Boston.

We met many Concierges who want to come check out our destination for themselves, and we will make that happen.

These pics are from our booth. One is of a quirky homegrown way to get the Concierge to interact with us. It involved red Solo cups and a ship’s wheel- and it worked!

Wait til you all see the cover of the 2012 Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide! One of Gloucester’s amazing photographers- whom your fobs know and love- took the fabulous shot. You’ll see it at the May 10 Visitor Guide debut at the new Castle Manor Inn on Essex Avenue. Deets to follow!

Gloucester, Mass. – Get Fit Gloucester! wants to hear your thoughts on how to make Gloucester safer to walk and bicycle. Help create a “Fit Friendly Gloucester” by attending the Complete Streets community forum being held Thursday April 26th at 6:30 PM in the Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Avenue.

Mass in Motion and Get Fit Gloucester! seek to address increasing levels of obesity in our society through changes in our community to support more physically active lifestyles and access to fresh healthy foods. These programs seek to make active transportation choices such as walking and bicycling safer and more convenient and to be the easiest choice for shorter trips within Gloucester. Many communities support active lifestyles is by creating “Complete Streets”.

Get Fit Gloucester! envisions neighborhoods where our children can safely walk or bike to school…and to the library, the park or local store. At lunchtime, we can take a relaxing walk or go for a bike ride or run, returning to a shower and refreshed for the afternoon. We can combine our errands with easy access to a harbor walk or the neighborhood park on the way home where our children can let off steam and we relax. There are clearly-marked bike trails for family outings as well as safe round the Cape routes for the teenagers and adults.

At the community forum you’ll learn more about what “Complete Street” policies mean for communities, see results of an assessment of Gloucester’s streets and sidewalks, hear about current City efforts to improve sidewalks and streets and have the opportunity to express your views and priorities for making Gloucester streets safer for walking and bicycling.

Pictured is just a binder with all of them printed out from her digital files and in a ginormous 3 ring binder.  Some brilliant publisher is going to make her an offer.  With her already built in audience from these pages and The Gloucester Times Taste of The Times it’s sure to be a hit.

The Goetemann Residency presents a Distinguished Artist/Teacher 4 Day Watercolor Workshop on Rocky Neck. All levels are welcome.

Stepping Back to See : A Watercolor Workshop given by Joel Janowitz, painter and printmaker

At its best, to paint with watercolors is to engage in a conversation with the medium. More often it is, as Sargent said, "making the best of an emergency." In either instance, a good conversation or a dire emergency, one needs to think clearly and respond immediately. This workshop will explore strategies for working with the surprising medium of watercolor. Progressive exercises and projects will focus on a variety of working methods and on increasing one’s awareness of color and value relationships — two key factors in capturing a convincing sense of light. At the same time, we will stay open to responding playfully, quickly, and spontaneously to the quirky surprises constantly offered up by the medium. Work will be primarily from observation.

The workshop will take place from May 14-17 on Rocky Neck and is divided into two sections:

  • SECTION ONE : Monday, May 14 and Wednesday, May 16 : 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Limited to 8 participants. Artists will bring back their work for a group crit/discussion to the 2nd meeting at 9 a.m. and then paint again from 10am to 1pm.
  • SECTION TWO : Tuesday May 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This section could meet at the end of the day if it would better accommodate those coming from work. Limited to 8 participants.
  • STUDIO VISITS : Joel will give 6 studio visits. Artists not taking the workshops will have first choice for these conversations with Joel Janowitz about their work.

PRICE : RNAC members, $25 per section. Non RNAC are $50 per section. You are welcome to become a RNAC member to sign up for this course. Two scholarships are available.

This is a view into the courtyard garden I designed for Willowdale Estate. The tulips are at their peak. I call this mix of colors my ‘Bridal Mix,’ because it provides a symphony of watercolor hues for the April and May weddings. Don’t you think too that the satiny sheen of the tulip petals looks like the silk satin gowns of wedding parties?

Coast Guard searches for missing kayaker, requests public assistance

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is searching for a possible missing kayaker after a red kayak was located in the Annisquam River south of Wingaersheek Beach, Mass., Tuesday.

A good Samaritan located the kayak near the mouth of the Mill River at approximately 3 p.m. and notified the Coast Guard.

The kayak is a Field and Stream model and has a serial number of XLJ95913C111.

A Coast Guard Station Gloucester 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew is currently searching the area.

"We aren’t sure if the kayak simply broke free from a mooring or if there’s someone really missing," said Ens. Michael Barker, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center. "Along with sending out a search crew, we are asking the public to let us know if they have any information regarding the owner of the kayak."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sector Boston Command Center at 617-223-5757.

The Coast Guard recommends kayakers and other paddlers place a Paddle Smart sticker with their name and phone numbers where rescuers may reach them or a friend or relative in the event their kayak is found. Paddlers and kayakers can also use a waterproof, permanent marker to write the information on their craft.

What you never saw & What to watch for in Brad Byrd’s New Video

Yesterday former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brad Byrd released his new video on GMG (see here) directed by another former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brandon Rose.  Excellent job, Brandon, Brad, Brie and everyone who made this happen!

Part of this video was shot at Minglewood Tavern on St. Pat’s day, so we thought we’d piece together some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of that video for you to see today.  You’ll see actresses Brie Hobbs trying out for the part of Brad’s girl-friend at the casting call and Stacey Iwanicki, who played one of the fans.  And of course you’ll see our boy Joey C, who was there for the entire shoot.  In the final video, there’s a good shot of Joey in the audience.  Welcome to the big time, Joey!

Brad will be shooting another video at Minglewood next Saturday, May 5, so you’ve got another chance to be in the audience and get on screen!  Stay tuned to GMG for details.

Just wanted to update everyone that we had a great day on Monday at Art Haven’s new space, finishing building out some walls, getting the art materials thrift store cleaned out, and Sal Russo coming through HUGE by finishing repointing the back wall of our function room!
