EJ–It looks like a gourd to me. They make great bird houses when hung from a tree and hollowed out (as this one appears to be).

Nope, not a turnip. Kim and Mustelidblues are close, but I was looking for someone to come up with what it is called. I’d never seen or heard of it before, but I figure someone knows because at least one person bought one. Answer in tomorrow’s post.

It’s a gall, (a growth formed around a parasite) from a tree, probably formed on a pin oak and fell off. Interesting, huh?

Yes Linn, that is very interesting. I never heard of gall in that context. I have seen them but never knew what they were called. I would be horrified if Market Basket was selling them to people for $3.99 though.

I love the prices at Market Basket but I think that $3.99 is a little high for something that looks like a mummy might be looking for one of his eyeballs.
