Hey Joe,

Just starting to about to begin edits on the first cut, I thought I would take a quick break and cut together a trailer. Did it quick, played with the title at the end, some color grading, AND posted it in 1080i… very cool, haha.

Anyway, now that everything is uploaded, I’ll have a lot of bits and clips coming up that I can play with and send over to you that you can post

I’m working on getting Sam a ginormous screening of the finished movie once it’s finished.

Sam and his crew are going to be huge one day, mark my words.  His main on air reporter Seth is smart years beyond his age.  Looking forward to more from the boys!

Ryan puts on the best show I have seen live, and that includes all the huge concerts I’ve been to. At 24 years old, Ryan Fardy has had a fantastic start to his 9-year career.  He has played to crowds all over New England and the United States (Las Vegas, California, Florida…etc), and even Canada.  He has opened for the legendary Chaka Khan, Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Mountain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Derringer, Hoobastank, and more.  He was also the featured cover story for Boston Blues Magazine at the age of 18. With an upbringing on the Boston Area blues scene, Ryan has created his own genre, mixing Blues, Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul, and Pop.  He is striving to make his songwriting ability known even though he still holds the “guitarslinger” tag throughout the Boston area.  His shows combine the inventiveness of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, the passion of Eric Clapton, and the on stage intensity of Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Audiences typically find themselves in awe of his command of the guitar and of the stage, and have trouble believing that they are witnessing the talents of someone so young.  However, they don’t have any trouble believing that they are seeing a performer who has a very bright future. The Essex Board of Health wants to remind everyone that The Second Annual Essex Youth Triathlon is this Saturday, August 7th at Centennial Grove in Essex.  This race is for youth of all abilities ages 5 through 15.  The Essex Youth Triathlon is the perfect opportunity to encourage and to instill the joy of health, the excitement of physical activity and pride of participation.
Registration for this event has been extended.  Participants can still register online at www.active.com or bring the registration to the BOH office, 30 Martin St, Essex MA through 3:30 pm on Thursday.  Please do not mail your registration at this time, because we may not receive it before the race.  
Participants ages 7-15 have the option of choosing one of 2 swim courses.  Those that choose the deep water swim must be certified and the BOH must receive certification by fax or email prior to the race.  Please see the triathlon link at www.essexma.org for additional information on this as well as other important triathlon information.  If you have any questions, please contact the Essex Board of Health at 978 768-7614 or boh@essexma.org.

Chocolate Zucchini Muffins…..WHAT??

You should see the reactions I get……”Yum! These are great muffins! So moist, so delicious….but what are those little green specs? ”

And when I tell them it is zucchini they really don’t know what to say.  It’s either “can I have the recipe?” or “I don’t like zucchini but I like these!”   My Mom’s friend Butch loved these muffins last time I made them but made  a point of telling me that next time I made them to be sure NOT to tell him there was zucchini in them and “ruin” it for him–but to be sure to bring some by.

Make no mistake–these are not “health food” muffins–they have their share of sugar, chocolate and white flour but if you are looking for a treat with a full four cups of zucchini in them this is the way to go.  I was thinking some walnuts would be delicious too but I have a lot of “no nuts” people in my life so I went with extra chocolate bits.

Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

2 cups all purpose flour

1 cup cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoon baking powder

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 1/2 cups light brown sugar

1/2 cup melted butter

1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil

3 large eggs, at room temperature

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

4 cups grated zucchini

1/2 cup milk

1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Line 24 muffins tin cups with paper liners and set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda and set aside.

In a large bowl, beat together granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter and canola oil until well mixed.  Add eggs, one at a time until combined.  Stir in vanilla and grated zucchini and mix well.

Mixing by hand, add the flour mixture and milk alternately in two batches and stir until nearly combined with a few flour streaks visible.  Add all but 1/4 cup of the chocolate chips and finish stirring until just combined.

Scoop in to prepared cups (I used a large ice cream scoop) and fill cups almost to the top.  Sprinkle a few of the remaining chocolate chips on top of the batter.

Bake for 18-24 minutes until just cooked through, rotating the baking pans half way through the cooking time if your oven heats unevenly like mine does.   Insert a toothpick into the center of one of the middle muffins and if it comes out nearly clean they are done.  Do not over bake.

Allow to cool completely in the pan.   The strange white looking things in my muffins are store brand chocolate chips that turned light in color when I baked them–I will NOT be buying those again.

If you want to call these cupcakes, make a nice chocolate buttercream and frost them or just pipe a large swirl of icing right on the top.  Makes 24 muffins.

She has lived and performed around her beautiful home state as well as in Chicago, Nashville, Boston, and, most recently, Cape Ann, MA. She has just finished a new original album which was released at the House of Blues in Boston on the 26th of June. Chelsea’s music is deep, earthy, and refreshing.. Her vocals are smooth and her lyrics poetic and identifiable to any listener. Her music falls somewhere between Sheryl Crow and Joni Mitchell.. With a little Alaskan edge.

Resident Artist/Teacher Ilana Manolson Workshops

Distinguished Artist/Teacher in Residence, Ilana Manolson will be in residence on Rocky Neck for one week during August 9-13th and during that time will teach small groups and meet with individual artists to discuss their work.

The Monoprinting workshop is filled but there may be spaces available in the painting workshop and critique.Sign up for a one-on-one critique of your work either at your studio (if it is on Rocky Neck or very nearby) or you can bring some work to the Residency Studio. Time to be arranged.

There is also a free painting demonstration at the Residency Studio (51A Rocky Neck Avenue) from 1-2pm on Wednesday, August 11th. The plein air painting class follows from 2-5pm at the public landing under the trees on Wonson Street. Spaces may still be available in this class.

Performers and entertainers include:

  • Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
  • Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event. 
  • Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.
  • Catherine Strisik, daughter of well-known Rockport artist Paul Stisik, has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim. This book of poetry gives a glimpse, through Strisik’s eyes, into Cambodian life 25 years after the Khmer Rouge slaughter of 1.7 million Cambodians through execution, disease and starvation. "Here is a perfect, clean and delicate (powerful and often terrifying) work of art," said John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.
  • Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.

Rocky Neck Art Colony Member’s Show, October 2 to 16

The Rocky Neck Art Colony will hold a Fall Member’s Show that will be on exhibit from October 2 to 16 at the Rocky Neck Gallery. All Rocky Neck Art Colony Members are encouraged to submit one or two pieces of their BEST WORK. There is no submission fee.

Rules for submission:
  • Media accepted includes painting (acrylic, oils, watercolor), mixed media and assemblage, photography, sculpture (including ceramic sculpture), printmaking, drawing.
  • Members can submit one large piece up to 40" wide (and 54" high). or two smaller pieces that together are not wider than 40".
  • If more pieces are submitted than will fit in the Rocky Neck Gallery, then an outside juror will help decide which pieces will hang together to create a unified show
  • Drop off date and times: Thursday, Sept. 30 from 6 pm to 8pm and Friday, October 1 from 10am to Noon.
  • All 2D work must be professionally framed, wired and ready to hang.
  • All people submitting work are required to gallery sit one time for 1 to 2 hours during the show.
  • Work may be for sale (but it is not required). If anything sells, the Art Colony will keep 25% commission.

Lynda Goldberg – August 5, 6 – “Creating Monotypes with an Etching Press” Explore the process of creating monotype (one-of-a-kind) prints on paper. Students will learn general printmaking techniques using an etching press. Incorporating the elements and principles of design students will create prints using natural and man made objects. Students will explore different ways of creating texture and depth on an inked surface. Using the plates created and pulled, students will have the original print, a “ghosted” print, and a third print utilizing what is left on the plate. The possibilities are endless! Limit 6.

Lynn Loscutoff – August 7, 8, 9 – “Watercolor on Yupo” This workshop is geared towards intermediate and experienced painters or the beginner who likes a challenge.
