Classic Cars on the Green Oct 13

Gloucester Meetinghouse Invitational, October 13th, car show to benefit Meetinghouse renovation

The opening event in the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation’s 2018-19 Concert & Lecture Series is a vintage car show, to be held on the green at the corner of Church and Middle Street from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, October 13th.  The event is free to the public but a $5 donation per adult is requested.

A set of over 30 very special classic cars will be on display!

This event will be the first annual classic car show displaying vintage or significant cars owned by North Shore collectors to benefit the ongoing restoration of the historic 1806 Meetinghouse as a civic hub, entertainment venue and community center by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.

It’s a competition! Vote for your favorites!

The audience will judge the cars in 9 categories, including Best in Show. The event will conclude with trophies given to the winners in an awards ceremony.

2 ELEGANCE The most elegant car
3 LUXURY The car with the most luxurious interior

Hourly tours of the Meetinghouse

will include a performance on the historic 1893 Hutchings pipe organ. Food and beverages will be available. A Dixieland band, ‘John’s Giddy Gang,’ will perform on the Meetinghouse steps.

Event will celebrate music and dance: Gund Kwok Asian Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe; recent immigrants from Nepal will perform music of the Gandharvas; indigenous music of Greece led by Vasilis Kostas; salsa lesson from Eli Lady Pabon; and music from Latin Logic (photo above).

I wonder if Carlos Menenzes (Cape Ann Big Band;Jambalaya horns, O’Maley), Zach Gorrell, Docksiders, and other area artists and musicians know these groups and vice versa?

Music on Meeting House Green Willie Alexander/ August 24, 2018

FROM GARAGE BAND TO THE BEAT OF ROCK ’N ROLL, WILLIE ALEXANDER AND THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY ORCHESTRA ROCK MEETINGHOUSE GREEN, AUGUST 24

 Gloucester-based singer/pianist Willie Alexander plays with his Persistence of Memory Orchestra at the free Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert on Friday, August 24, 6 – 9 pm.

 Alexander has played and raved through more musical eras than most musicians have survived. With deep roots in ‘60s bands such as the Lost and Bagatelle, becoming a member of Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground in 1971, Alexander’s music fuses punk, rock ’n roll, jazz and blues, with hip-hop laced with techno. Together with his Persistence of Memory Orchestra, Alexander will have you hopping and jiving under the fairy lights of Meetinghouse Green. His music is zany, soulful and rocks you out of your chair. Fun for both young and old concert-goers.

 As always, the concert is free but in the spirit of giving to the community, the audience is invited to make free-will donations to the Grace Center, a local day resource center serving adults in crisis in the Cape Ann area. Breakfast and lunch are served to adults in need, Monday to Friday, at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church.

 Bring cash or a checkbook, beach chairs or blankets. Fresh, all-natural food is provided by The Common Crow. In case of rain, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse. Parking is available in lots nearby and at St. Peter’s Square.

Reminder about the USAF “Airmen of Note” Jazz Band free concert at Gloucester High School 7-9PM tonight. What a great name and special event for any high school, especially Gloucester, home of the Docksiders, great high school and middle school bands, and such rich music talent throughout the community! On this gorgeous spring day, enjoy a past video of the USAF band playing It Might As Well Be Spring (Rodgers and Hammerstein). Read more about the band below. Hope someone takes a picture like that one on the steps here in Gloucester by the Man at the Wheel and on the High School steps 🙂

“The the first half of the concert is performed on the historic 1893 Hutchings/Fisk organ in the Gloucester Meetinghouse (home of the Unitarian Universalist Church) and the second half is performed on the innovative 1989 C. B. Fisk organ in St. John’s Episcopal Church next door.  Six professional organists, related in various ways to Gloucester, will perform diverse repertoire on these two fine pipe-organs.  The concert will include narration about the work of Charles Fisk, the relationship of the players to the Fisk legacy, and a bit about how the two instruments sound.  A reception will follow the concert.”

WHAT: O’Maley Innovation Middle School – O’Maley Academy Drama Club’s Production of Shrek The Musical Jr. “Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. Music by Jeanine Tesori. Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. based on DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig.”

Cape Ann Museum Fitz Henry Lane Quick Steps and Ballads

“The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Quick Steps and Ballads: The Sheet Music Lithographs of Fitz Henry Lane, on Saturday, January 6 at 3:00 p.m.  This musical performance is free for Cape Ann residents, Museum members or with Museum admission. Reservations are required and can be made online at camuseum.eventbrite.com or call (978)283-0455 x10.

The performance was conceptualized and coordinated by local musicians Kristina Martin, Kathleen Adams and Beverly Soll with music transcription and program design by Andrew Soll. Featured performers include the Waring School Singers, ‘Leven, Vintage Victorian of Nahant, and other individuals from around the north shore area. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the dances and hear the songs that were popular in the 19th century!

The performance is offered in conjunction with the special exhibition Drawn from Nature & on Stone: The Lithographs of Fitz Henry Lane, which was designed to explore artist Fitz Henry Lane’s life and career in detail and against the backdrop of 19th century printmaking culture in America. As early as 1833 Lane was illustrating sheet music for these popular songs of the time. The special exhibition is on display until March 4, 2018.
