4 years ago, during the early Fall, Chelsea Berry and I were trying to come up with a great way to utilize a small chapel in Manchester-by-the-Sea for a performance. The idea was a Christmas show that became known as “Holidays & Wintertide.”
Our 4th annual production was this past Saturday night, and for the first time, the show took place in Gloucester. On behalf of Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis, Brian Alex, Joe Cardoza, Dennis Monagle and myself, I would like to say “Thank You, Gloucester and Cape Ann!”
The night was magical, the songs were perfect and the audience was divine, so I would like to take a moment to send out some thank yous:
To Chelsea, Renee, Brian, Joe & Dennis : It was an absolute honor to work with you on this years’ show. I was blown away – as I believe everyone else was. There were moments that literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your professionalism, your kindness, and for sharing your talent and holiday spirit with all of us.
To Dawn Caraway and the Tavern on the Harbor: Thank for saving the day and for your remarkable hospitality in the most beautiful of settings. When we realized our past venue was unavailable, you stepped up and gave us a home, and I hope you will have us back next year. Your room is spectacular, and the acoustics are shockingly crisp… more shows to come.
To Louise Welch: You are my personal and musical Dalai Lama. You do so much for me (and the Cape Ann music community), and we are very fortunate to have you as part of our community. Thank you for always being my production sidekick and making this show such a success.
Thank you to Mark Rahilly for running sound and making the show sound exceptional. To Peter Hoare, who has worked with me on this show from the start, thank you for your production help and sharing your equipment. To Lisa Hubbard, thank you for your magic touch in making the set look so good. And to Joanne Silva, thank you for your continued promotion of my productions and all of the great musical events on Cape Ann. You are another shining jewel in the crown of Gloucester’s music scene.
Lastly, to the people of Gloucester and beyond, thank you for coming out and making the night so special for the performers and for me. This has always been my favorite production of the year, and this year was better than ever. We know you have a lot of choices in live music throughout Cape Ann, and the music community appreciates it when music-lovers come together to support a paid performance. It’s a tough environment out there for professional musicians, but your show of support for events like this reminds performers why they are on this path and doing the thing they love.

Each year, this magical celebration of the holidays has highlighted holiday classics and lesser-known, future favorites performed by some of the area’s most acclaimed talents.
This year’s performance has moved to Gloucester, Massachusetts’ Tavern on the Harbor. The new location will afford our guests a more comfortable viewing and listening experience, a full bar and convenient access to parking.

Perhaps you are planning a wedding or special event in the coming months. Our daughter Liv Hauck and Matt O’Rourke, married on June 20th, wanted to share about the talented people who helped make their dream wedding come true. From caterers Dan Allen and Andy Maitland to Esther Mathieu Photography, everyone involved did an outstanding job. We wish to express our most heartfelt thanks to all and thought the best way to say a big thank you to each was to provide contact information and a brief description about their businesses.

First and foremost, our tremendous thanks and appreciation goes to Dan Allen Catering. He, along with partner Andy Maitland (Maitland Mountain Farm), prepared an exquisite menu using the most freshest and sweetest ingredients from local farms and fisheries. The theme was New England clambake meets county dinner, based around everyone’s favorite main courses—Ken Duckworth’s sublime recipe for lobster risotto and a wonderfully delicious buttermilk fried chicken. Captain Joe and Sons provided the lobster and the fresh vegetables came from Maitland Mountain Farm, as well as from Appleton Farms. Even the honey butter for the cornbread came from Dan’s own beehives! We were all raving about how delicious and unique were the hors d’oeuvres, which included such tantalizing tidbits as open-faced braised rib sliders, smoked tomato roasted corn arancini, and salmon canapés with mascarpone, capers, and fresh dill. Accompaniment dishes were devoured as equally as were the main courses and hors d’oeuvres—traditional clam chowder, farm fresh succotash, and homemade pickled vegetable—to name only a few.

Dan’s assistant Mary made the divinely delicious desserts—raspberry tarts, brown butter chocolate chip cookies, brownie layers—the list goes on and on!

Esther Mathieu is simply the most talented life style photographer in our region. Liv first became interested in Esther’s work from her Instagram account and we all fell in love with her luminous imagery. And she is a total sweetheart to work with! Like a dream, the enchanting music floating throughout the evening was by none other than Cape Ann’s own beautiful songstress Renee Dupuis and the fabulously talented Joe Cardoza and Nathan Cohen. From the sweetly romantic, “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” to which the bride and groom danced their first dance, to one of the bridesmaid’s favorites, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin,” there isn’t a song Renee, Joe, and Nathan could not play, and play beautifully. Melissa Glorieux of Aster B. Flowers created the exquisite bride’s bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, and table arrangements. Not only were the flowers full and lush and perfect, they are all locally grown at her farm in Essex! Aster. B grows her flowers using organic practices only. The very talented Maria Cracchiolo from Caffe Sicilia made the seashore inspired wedding cake as well as the perfectly coordinating 65th anniversary cake for Liv’s grandparents. Delicious and delightful (both cakes), Maria is a pleasure to work with. She also made the cannolis we served at Friday night’s celebration and they too, were devoured by all! Kathleen Erickson, owner of Savour Wine and Cheese, was instrumental in choosing the wines and Prosecco. This was the first time going to NYE In Rockport. I got my button and went straight to The Shalin Liu. I moved around a bit. Got a seat right away in the balcony then asked if it was ok to move down to the main floor. It was excellent. Twenty dollars for a button and I got to see two great shows at the same venue. There was music all over the small town of Rockport and all kinds of festivities. I was happy,so there was no need to venture out. Woke up to a dusting of new snow that was gone by noon. Only a few dirty-gray-white winter leftovers remain as the sun burns a bright spot behind the clouds — too shy to show its full face. Does this presage one of those jolting seasons when Mother Nature forgets about spring and jumps into summer without warning?
That’s what seems to happen in Gloucester’s music scene. Before you know it your choices for live music double, but don’t worry. We’ll continue to help you sort it all out with Cape Ann’s only complete live music listing here.
If you think about it, there really are two kinds of music venues: restaurants/clubs and what musicians call “listening venues”. (That is, until the weather gets nice enough to add a third: boats with music cruises.) For now, suffice it to say that we’re extremely lucky to live in an area with an abundance of good restaurants and clubs who offer live music for free because they’re able to make a living on the food and drink they serve.
A good club can make for a great experience (both for artist and fan) but sometimes you end up in a singer vs. crowd competition like the one I wrote about here.

Free from the distractions of TV, clanging silver & dishware, people talking, wait staff running around and kitchen noise, the concert milieu connects you with the artist through an intimate, intense bond that’s simply impossible to maintain in a restaurant or bar. And when you’re on stage you can feel that energy, soak it in and give back something more powerful that seems to arise spontaneously out of the ether.
Luckily, we live in an area with several excellent listening venues. Good coffee houses: Old Sloop in Rockport. One World in Essex and Crosswinds in Gloucester. Cape Ann’s crown jewel, the Shalin Liu performance Center and the Larcom Theatre down the road in Beverly.
With your help, Gloucester’s iconic UU Meetinghouse is working to restore their balcony so it can become another major listening venue and we’re helping them by presenting concerts in the church to raise money for that effort. Cape Ann Winter Solstice started this project off by packing the house on December 21. We’re doing it again on April 25 with The Number Nines featuring top Cape Ann talent 3rian King, Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis and Dennis Monagle together with Boston stars Meff and Brendan Burns.
