Gloucester Public School 10th Annual citywide arts festival held at City Hall, Sawyer Free and Cape Ann Museum May 12, 2018. Thanks to the fantastic teachers, all the parent and community volunteers that pull this beautiful event together, and the special host venues. The Arts Festival is strongly supported by the Gloucester Education Foundation.

Here are some scenes from City Hall starting with linocuts created by the first 8th grade printmaking classes to use the historic Acorn press on temporary loan from generous supporters of the Manship estate and thanks to Mayor Romeo Theken and O’Maley’s art teacher Brett Dunton. The invited special guest instructor was Mary Rhinelander.

Kurt Lichtenwald and GHS robotics presented at 1pm. GHS has 11 engineering courses — teaching to the top! Showing us Propane furnaces, LADAR, magnetic Newton’s cradle (no sound), a hovercraft that can carry 60 pounds… Design. Build. Modify. (More than one kid behind me said “I can’t wait to go to high school.”) Displayed art by O’Maley Middle school artists throughout City Hall, Cape Ann Museum and Sawyer Free.

On June 17th, the last day of school, the classic 17 piece Cape Ann Big Band hosted a Spring/Summer Concert at the O’Maley Middle School, A Swing Extravaganza. Listen to some of the songs in the clip below! The band was formed in 2010. The band leader for this super professional, top-notch, sought after band is Carlos Menezes Jr. He just happens to be the director of the O’Maley music department! Our students have access to astonishing and creative visual arts, performance,and music teachers. The members of the Cape Ann Big Band, Gloucester Education Foundation, O’Maley Band Parent Organization, Captain Hooks, Supinos, Paula Burns, and others are making this music happen to inspire the kids in our community.”80% of all ticket sales went to help fund new instruments and band room renovations at the Middle School.” Plus Cape Ann Big Band announced during the concert that they are donating those sweet stands to the music department.

Here’s two minutes of video snippets including classics Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and ‘S Wonderful with vocalist Katy Geraghty. You’ll hear a huge round of applause for Carlos Menezes Jr solo, and stunning vocals from Kate Barry, Scott Parisi and Nathan Seavey. I loved the rendition of “Me and Mrs. Jones” the 1972 song by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Cary Gilbert. My phone battery died so I didn’t grab from that song. I also missed the O’Maley Jazz ensemble who played a big set of 10 songs with many solos. They were incredible. Next time you hear that the school band or Cape Ann Big Band are playing a gig make it a point to see them.
The true one and only ‘Cat’ in Gloucester, Cat Barbagallo with the Sayess family, other parents and GEF helping out with fundraising.
This has received a lot of press…and rightfully so! What a fantastic event this will be and with such an important message.

The Gloucester Education Foundation will host its first Power of Play Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 20 at the Gloucester High School fieldhouse, 32 Leslie O. Johnson Road. The festival, open to families and children of all ages, will feature games, art projects, dance, sports and other activities to celebrate the importance of play in educating children.
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning but for children, play is serious learning,” said Fred Rogers, the late children’s educator and longtime host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” “Play is really the work of childhood.”
The Power of Play Festival will feature giant building blocks; tiny, 3-D house- and boat-building; Lego-building challenges; sensory play tables with water, sand and goop; giant floor puzzles; collaborative art projects; taekwondo and yoga; puppet workshops and shows; and an obstacle course.
The event is sponsored by Cape Ann Savings Bank and Cape Ann Savings Trust & Financial Services. Admission is $5 per family.
“Play teaches children how to solve problems, communicate with others, and think creatively — skills that will serve them their whole lives,” said June Steel, president of the Gloucester Education Foundation board of directors. “That’s the real Power of Play. The Gloucester Education Foundation recognizes that children’s education is about more than memorizing facts and preparing for tests. We’re committed to improving our children’s education inside and outside the classroom.”
The Gloucester Education Foundation was created to help drive innovation and encourage creativity in the Gloucester Public Schools and empower educators to strengthen teaching and learning. The foundation’s goal is to help the Gloucester Public School District be one of the best school districts in Massachusetts.

All usable gardening items, plants, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetable donations are welcome or contact Susan@GenerousGardeners.org to arrange pick up or drop off at an earlier date. Since all of the proceeds benefit GEF, you will get a tax deduction for whatever we earn from your plants.

After we saw the piece on Calvo’s exceptional work we thought you may want to check this out.
Next time you are in the GHS field house be sure to have a look at the new sign created and designed by the GHS Cabinet Design & Innovation class.
The original sign was damaged over the years due to various sporting events. The Cabinet Design class under the instruction of Teacher Tim Rose took over the assignment of replacing it. The pictures show some of the talented students who were involved in the project (Mike Munroe, Hannah Pastagal, John Whitmore)
The new sign was created in large part with the help of the new “Computer Numerical Control” or CNC machine which the Cabinet Design Class received through a grant from the Gloucester Education Foundation last year.
Students first designed and then programmed each of the letters using a CNC software program- The design was then fabricated on the CNC. Each letter was attached to the newly designed backboard and finally finished with a bit of paint and a gloss polyurethane.
As you can see, the new sign is a great improvement of the old, and best of all, our very own GHS students crafted it!
The Cabinet Design and Innovation program is one of the longest running electives offered at GHS and is available to all GHS students. Each year the program enrolls 75 students for a full school year.

On Friday night at the Cape Ann Museum, the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) held its annual celebration, noting its growth and progress over the past year. Over 100 people attended including teachers, donors, and city officials.
One exciting GEF initiative you’ll be hearing more about in coming weeks is the "Using Technology to Enhance Project-Based Learning" program which will allow students in the program to use iPads to document changes to Gloucester from 1900 to the present day. More details to come!

Kurt Lichtenwald, AKA Coach L, has taught engineering, technology ,robotics and physics for the past 14 years at Gloucester High School . He has created, developed and implemented the curriculum for each of these subjects. Lichtenwald’s Robotics program is supported by Gloucester Education Foundation.

Distinguished Educator Christine L. McGrath Joins the Gloucester Education Foundation Board
Gloucester resident contributes classroom and broader system expertise.
GLOUCESTER – Christine L. McGrath, recently retired Superintendent of the Tewksbury Public Schools and former Assistant Superintendent and Administrator of Special Education for the Gloucester Public Schools, was elected to the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) Board of Directors at its January meeting.
“The GEF Board is comprised of individuals dedicated to the improving education in the district. All have community connections, talents, and skills that enhance our work. We are excited that Chris has agreed to join us. Her extensive knowledge of the Massachusetts educational system and experience as an educator at all levels are incredible resources on which we can draw,” said GEF President Ed Shoucair.
McGrath is currently serving as Director of Operations for the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (MASS). She is also an adjunct professor for Fitchburg State College’s Superintendent’s Leadership Academy, a member of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Partnership for Youth Advisory Board, and of the Commission on American and International Schools Abroad for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges for which she conducts international school evaluations.
Known for her energy and enthusiasm, McGrath said of her election, “I am honored to become a member of the Gloucester Education Foundation Board and to support their important and successful efforts on behalf of our school system. I am pleased to have the opportunity to once again “give back” to my community and my school system.”

Wednesday, December 1st: Race to Nowhere Fundraiser at Cape Ann Community Cinema
On Wednesday, December 1st, the Cape Ann Community Cinema will show the award-winning film "Race to Nowhere" to raise money for the GEF. “Race to Nowhere” is new documentary about the pressures faced by American schoolchildren and their teachers in a system and culture obsessed with the illusion of achievement, competition and the pressure to perform. It is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. The film will be shown at 7:00p; $2 of the $10 ticket cost will be donated to the GEF. The cinema is located on Main Street above Mystery Train; special thanks to Rob Newton for supporting the GEF!
Thursday, December 2nd: Holiday Book Fair to support Gloucester District Schools
The Gloucester Public School District is holding a holiday book fair in collaboration with Barnes & Noble. Shop at B&N (near the North Shore Mall ) any time on Thursday, December 2nd; identify yourself as a GPS book fair customer, and the Gloucester Public Schools District will receive 15% to 20% of your purchases! This includes their huge selection of books, music, and toys, and even cafe purchases. In addition, each GPS district school has put together a wish list for its library.
You can also shop online between December 2nd and December 7th at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/bookfairs; just enter book fair ID #10355451 at checkout. If you already have an B&N account, please click the "Change Payment" link at checkout to specify the book fair ID.
