What a weekend!
Summer might be over, but the hot Fall music season has just begun.
TONIGHT (FRI) you’ve just got to go see Sarah and the Wild Versatile at Minglewood. Here they are at our gimmeLIVE summer concert featuring Boston’s Rising Stars at the Cabot.
TOMORROW (SAT) Cape Ann Symphony‘s musical feast featuring “The most descriptive sex music ever written” (more on that in this post). Get tickets here.
SUNDAY Lanesville Music Festival, featuring some of Cape Ann’s finest musicians. (More on that in this post.) Donations accepted at the door.

Lanesville Music Fest Next Saturday 9/28 – Perfect for the whole FAMILY!
This just in from Osha Rose & Sara Wester:
The Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Gloucester, presents our 4th Annual Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1:00 to 11:30 pm. (see music lineup here)
The Festival features ten hours of great live music starting outdoors on the grounds from 1-7pm with some of the North Shore’s best musicians covering: bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, Celtic, country and blues, jump, jive and boogie. Great food and beverages will be sold by Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ with beer and wine on sale, as well as local crafts and children’s activities. Admission for the daytime music is by donation.
It all continues indoors on our dance floor from 7:30-11:30pm, featuring the great, KBMG band (King, Brown, Mattacks and Ginandes). Advance tickets for the evening dance party are available at Gloucester Music on Main Street and the Plum Cove Grind in Lanesville for $12 until the day of the event. Tickets will be $15 at the door and you can purchase during the daytime music event.

It’s music, food & festivals in Gloucester this weekend
Continuing with my interest in starting the weekend on Thursday, I’ll be at the Y Taste of Cape Ann to benefit the Y’s teen, camp and childcare initiatives. Get tickets here or just go to the Cruiseport at 6pm for food & drink from some of Cape Ann’s best restaurants, along with live music, cooking demonstrations, raffles, door prizes and more.
John wants to see the Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest (he loves We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions) at Cape Ann Community Cinema that starts at 7:30pm followed by a live set by the all-female Queen Tribute band Gunpowder Gelatine. We’ll try to get to both.

Saturday is family festival day with the Captains Courageous Festival featuring live music at Gloucester’s UU Church and the Lanesville Music Festival starting at 1:30pm with two of my favorites, Pete Lindberg at 5:30 and Bill Gleason at 7:30, then becoming a HUGE dance party at 8:30 featuring the great KBMG with special guest J.B. Music connections revolving around Gloucester
Allen Estes‘ Cable TV show Local Music Seen features Brian King tonight at 6:30pm. On the show, Brian sings his hit Cold Rain, which was recorded by Irma Thomas, the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” (listen here). You can see Brian at Giuseppe’s tonight.
Irma Thomas appears in the HBO TV hit Treme (season 3 premieres this Sunday night). And in the Treme video below, you can see Irma Thomas with Amadee Castenell in the blue suit on sax right next to her (that’s Dave Bartholomew, who lived down the street from Henri Smith, on trumpet next to Amadee)
Amadee performs with Henri Smith here in Gloucester and was in Henri’s band when he opened for Aaron Neville on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre (see him in the photo below, on the right next to Danny Heath on Trombone)
Before he went on stage that night, Aaron Neville had been reviewing mixes from his upcoming album, My True Story with his wife, Sarah, who directed the video, below, that was released exactly 1 week ago today:

Veteran blues man, Bill Gleason is Fly’s guest tonight at the Rhumb Line. He’s also one of the featured performers at the Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday followed by KBMG with Fly’s brother J.B. as a special guest.
And Pete Lindberg, who plays drums on Marina Evans‘ new EP (listen here) is performing his own songs at the Lanesville Music Festival at 5:30 (see festival schedule here)

2nd Annual Lanesville Music Festival FunRaiser, on Sat. Sept. 17
The Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St. Gloucester, presents its 2nd Annual Lanesville Music Festival FunRaiser, on Sat. Sept. 17 from 12:30 – 9:30. Nine hours of music by some of the North Shore’s best players: bluegrass, blues, classics, R&B, and more.
From 12:30 – 6 the setting is outdoors under tents, in the field next to the historic barn that houses the LCC, with food and beverages for sale by the Plum Cove Grind, Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ, the LCC and Fisherman’s Brew. The music includes Lisa Marie & All Shook Up; Ryan, Ortolani & Fleming; Steve Brennan; Not That Blonde; Wild Maple; and Ric Saint Germain & Friends.
From 6:30 – 9:30, kick up the dust on the new dance floor with Mari Martin & her band The Dirty Little Secrets (Dave Keon, John Hicks, Ira Levine and Ken Cleveland). There will be raffles, including a 50-50, gift certificates from local merchants, t-shirts for sale and kids’ activities. Admission is by donation to benefit the ongoing renovation of the LCC, making it available for arts and music events, as well as private party rentals – a community resource for everyone to enjoy.
