Markouk Bread – local, fresh, tasty, and healthy food is a #GloucesterMA must know foodie destination

Maha Jabba, owner and chef at Markouk Bread, and crew create flavorful and delicious Mediterranean everyday eats at their location on 338 Main Street, in Gloucester, MA, near houses that inspired artist Edward Hopper, and famed public stairs and Crow’s Nest featured in books, art and cinema. Their popular and traditional dishes highlight Lebanese cuisine. Customers can eat standing or sitting–inside and out; most people opt for grab & go. Customers may find it helpful to call ahead (they sell out), and find it easier parking across the street.

“If only you could cook like his mom.” Fun fact: As a longtime fan favorite at Cape Ann Farmers Market and Main Street events, people are familiar with Jabba’s everyday gourmet and dazzling saj-grill meals. What they may not know is when her son played for GHS sports (eventually soccer co-captain), those lucky athletes had the best team dinners ever at their house, enjoying classic comfort dishes and other specialties. She can cook everything!

MESSAGE FROM BACKYARD GROWERS LARA LEPIONKA: HOW TO PUT HEALTHY FOOD ON YOUR NEIGHBOR’S TABLE

I’ve been told that spring isn’t canceled. So with this promise of spring, we are working hard to get our community and backyard gardens ready for the growing season so people can have fresh, healthy food to put on their tables. As with most things these days, this pandemic is threatening this promise.
Now more than ever community and backyard gardens are a critical part of our local food system. Gardens help improve food security and the health and nutrition of our most vulnerable populations. And now, with looming job losses and income instability for many more residents, growing some of one’s one food in backyard, community, and even container gardens can make a big difference in the health and wellness of our community during this unprecedented time.
We want you to know that we are working harder than ever to deliver new and innovative ways to serve our economically vulnerable seniors and families–through virtual training, safe seed and seedling distribution, enhanced digital content through our website, and a new, affordable container garden program.
We need your help to keep the promise of spring alive for our gardeners and program members. Please consider making a monthly, sustaining gift to Backyard Growers so we can continue to serve our community. When you make a new or increased monthly contribution today, your donation will be DOUBLED thanks to our friends at The Lenny Zakim Fund . Please make the biggest impact possible by supporting us today. DONATE HERE
If you’re interested in more Information on how you can become a Backyard Garden participant or Community Gardener, including income eligibility information, click here . For households that do not meet BYG income eligibility, Backyard Growers has partnered with Black Earth Compost to deliver and install raised bed gardens around the region.

SHORT AND MAIN CONTINUING TO SERVE TAKE-OUT!

Dear Short & Main Customers,

First we want to thank everyone for their generosity over the past week.  As the ground shifted beneath our feet last week we had to lay-off 90% of our beloved staff and move to a new business model of curbside pickup.  It’s been tough obviously but the number of well wishes and takeout orders have helped raise our spirits.

With continued optimism, we hope to stay open and serve our community in these surreal times. When we get through it we hope to hire everyone back and probably have a really, really big party.

Until this is over the staff that have been let go could use some assistance.  We’ve set up a relief fund for our affected employees located on our website.  If any of our customers are able to contribute it would mean a great deal at this time.

We’re excited to offer our monthly burger special this Wednesday the 25th.  We expect to run out and would like to give all of you the option to reserve one online before Wednesday. If you’re worried about not getting one please go to our websitewhere we’ll explain how it works.

The following Wednesday, April 1st, We’ll be offering our monthly fried chicken special and give you the same reservation option we’re using for Burger Wednesday.
Starting Thursday March 6th we’ll bring back non-pizza entrees for all our GF friends, starting with Massachusetts raised beef short rib and then moving to a delicious roast chicken from Green Circle Farm the following week.

We’ll post our menu to the website every time it changes but we’re trying to keep things a bit simpler for the time being.

SHORT AND MAIN COVID-19 UPDATE

Dear Short & Main customers,

Obviously things are moving pretty fast.  Before Governor Baker’s announcement we had decided to close our dining room and switch to takeout service only.  We are ready to continue serving you in a safe and responsible way.

Place your order over the phone with a credit card and we will deliver to your car on Short Street.  No cash, no signatures, no door handles.
We are of the belief that we can’t be too cautious or too clean.  It’s for that reason that we will not be doing delivery at this time as it adds an extra link in the chain that we’re unable to control.  We hope that you trust us to be diligent and mindful during this time. That trust feels personal to us and we’d like to keep it at all costs.

We will be opening an hour early; 4pm to 9pm for now.

Our public events are obviously canceled but we will still be serving burgers and fried chicken on the first and last Wednesdays of the month.  You can pre-order via phone or email if you’re worried about our popular specials running out.

Let’s FLATTEN THE CURVE together!

-sincerely Short & Main

DUCKWORTH’S GIFT CARDS- HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF A WAY TO HELP OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Many share our worries in regard to local small businesses. Our restaurants and the friends who work in these establishments, downtown Main Street retail shops, Cape Ann’s fishermen and lobstermen, the nonprofits that serve our community, artists, writers, photographers, musicians, designers, the list goes on and on. We are all going to be hit hard by this devastating turn of events.

One way in which we can help each other stay afloat is to buy gift cards. It may sound inconsequential, but every purchase will help. Our friends at Duckworth’s have a link to purchase gift cards and it is a great example of one small way we can help. Duckworth’s Gift Cards

Any local business that wants to communicate with their customers and the public about special offerings during these extremely challenging times please feel free to email me (kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com) or email any of our contributors and we will post here. Thank you!

PASTAIO VIA CORTA – ONLINE IS UP AND READY TO ORDER!

MESSAGE FROM DANIELLE AT PASTAIO:

ONLINE IS UP. We are now accepting online orders. You can visit my website to not only have my dried pasta shipped to you but also some really really amazing specialty pantry items. As usual we still plan to open on March 25th, Wednesday, with the intention of servicing good food for our community here taking the most serious precautions. Your health and ours in the most important and we want to make sure everything goes smoothly. My need now here in my community is to make sure everyone has access to good food, whether it’s local or imported from small farmers, we plan on being fully stocked and providing the best food possible. Stay tuned!

SHORT AND MAIN COVID-19 UPDATE

Dear Customers,

The health and safety of our staff and customers is of utmost importance to us. We are following the recommendations and updates provided by the Gloucester Health Department. We are taking the additional measures to make keep our restaurant clean and safe:
-We are asking any staff member feeling ill to say home.
-We are asking all staff to wash their hands at regular intervals throughout service.
-We will have hand sanitizer available at the entrance of the restaurant.
-All surfaces in the kitchen and public spaces will be sprayed with a food safe disinfectant spray regularly.

Curbside Pickup: Because we know some people will want to limit their exposure to the public, we are poised for an uptick in to-go orders, and will be adding delivery service as soon as Wednesday the 18th

Our events are still scheduled as planned.  If anything changes we let you now.

CORONAVIRUS MESSAGE FROM OUR FRIENDS AT DUCKWORTH’S

Hello friends,

We are committed to our collective health and are taking direction from the CDC and ServSafe to keep all of us safe.

We are washing, and washing and washing our hands some more.

We are using a CDC approved bleach solution for cleaning tables in between guests.

All tableware has been sanitized through our high temp dishwasher before it gets to you.

Our compostable straws are individually wrapped.

Door knobs and pulls will be wiped frequently.

We have hand sanitizer in all server stations and the restroom.

We are using single use menus and recycling after each use.

This situation seems to be evolving rapidly and on that note, we fully understand that you may have to cancel last minute. We appreciate that and ask that you give us a quick call to let us know. Health and safety come first.
