Open window
I noticed the open window because a bird hopped in. I didn’t stop to see what ensued but I was reminded about a GMG reader question: Who remembers Cher Ami and homing pigeons of Gloucester?
There’s a 2nd little pane missing on the Main Street side.
What’s in a name?
The 1810 brick building, Gloucester’s first, at the corner of 2 Main and 3 Washington Streets, now features Tonno Restaurant. The exterior has remained relatively unchanged since it was built in 1810 by Col. James Tappan. On the inside it’s been mixed use more often than not (various businesses, restaurants and lodgings). As a result it’s gone through a lot of rebranding: Puritan House, Tappan’s Hotel, Atlantic House, and Capt Bills are a few of the names associated with this historic structure. The Blackburn Tavern signs were added in 1978 for a restaurant.
Still Standing
The brick building at the other end of Main Street with Halibut Point Restaurant & Pub was Howard Blackburn’s actual tavern.
Fun fact: Col. Tappan taught young Daniel Webster.

When O’Maley 6th graders study Gloucester and visit the HarborWalk, the student thank you drawings featured whale tails and spouting whales. It’s common for local kids to be invited to birthday parties on whale watch trips. Donna Ardizzoni photographed and wrote about her Right Whale sightings from shore spring 2018, and more whale sightings around town. Parsons Street wall Mural (by the Fish Net HarborWalk street mural) was painted by local kids under the direction of Cape Ann Art Haven and features a great whale.
Ocean Alliance headquarters is located in Gloucester. Kim Smith posted the announcement for its most recent National Geographic special.
Maritime Museum (opening May 26) and Cape Ann Museum are included on the new Whale Trail map. Cape Ann Museum collection includes Hartley’s study for Whales Jaw Dogtown
Stores along Main Street and throughout Gloucester’s neighborhoods have art and goods inspired by whales. Look for hand carved wood sculptures at Willow Rest. Savour Wine & Cheese, Gloucester, MA

MAYOR SEFATIA AND TONNO’S ANTHONY CATURANO SUGO VS. GRAVY GREAT COOK-OFF ROUND TWO!
Warren Waugh, Mayor Sefatia, Karen Hanson
Mayor Sefatia and her team, Chef Anthony Caturano and the Tonno staff, and Warren Waugh with Cidalia Schwartz and the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team brought the community together for a fabulous lunch of the Mayor’s “sugo” versus the Chef’s “gravy.” The luncheon included steaming bowls of polenta and sausage with gravy versus homemade pasta and meatballs dressed with sugo. Both were wonderfully delicious! Tori Amos and Brian King provided lovely background music and Scottie Mac was the DJ.

Sadly, the day’s event took place without Anthony’s presence. His sister Christina Caturano Ryan passed away from breast cancer several days ago. She was only forty one and left two young children. Anthony was attending Christina’s funeral today. Despite her tragic death, Anthony insisted that the fundraiser take place. His team did a phenomenal job. The staff donated their time and all funds raised goes to the care of cancer patients. We wish to offer our most heartfelt condolences to Anthony.

MILES FOR MEATBALLS WITH CHEF ANTHONY CATURANO, MAYOR SEFATIA, AND WARREN WAUGH AUTOS!
Generous donors rally for breast cancer awareness.
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Miles for Meatballs today raised a whopping $4,700.00 for breast cancer!!! The event was hosted by Mayor Sefatia, Tonno’s Chef Anthony Caturano, and Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group. The Miles for Meatballs event began with a scenic tour around Cape Ann in luxury cars from the very generous Warren Waugh. The drive was followed by a fabulous late afternoon dinner at Tonno. Chef Anthony prepared his famous homemade meatballs and sausage with zugu/gravy, served over the creamiest polenta you can imagine. The homestyle, yet elegant dinner was accompanied by an outstanding Caesar salad and delicious cannolis. Every Sunday Chef Anthony serves a traditional meatball and zugu/gravy Sunday family dinner and I know where we will be having dinner next Sunday!
Carve ’em up son!

MAYOR SEFATIA AND ANTHONY CATURANO, OWNER/CHEF TONNO RESTAURANT, RAISE $$10,000.00 FOR CANCER!!
Mayor Sefatia write’s, “BIG shout out to Anthony Caturano and Tonno staff for the December ‘Sauce Cookoff: Gravy vs. Sugo’ charity event. We proudly raised $10,000.00 for local cancer patients and supporting services. Today, we delivered a check for $7,500.00 to Addison Gilbert Hospital Oncology, which will directly support their patients. The other $2,500.00 was previously given to different families in time for the Holidays.❤️
CONGRATULATIONS TO MAYOR SEFATIA AND CHEF ANTHONY CATURANO FOR HUGE SUCCESS FIRST EVER SAUCE COOK OFF FOR A CAUSE!
Bravo and huge shout out to Mayor Romeo Theken, Chef Anthony, the Tonno staff, and all the volunteers who contributed to today’s successful sauce cook off charity luncheon. Held at Tonno (Anthony donated his restaurant and the Tonno staff volunteered their time), the event raised money to benefit three families with a member undergoing cancer treatment at Addison Gilbert Hospital. The families will each receive $500.00. The additional monies raised are going to the oncology department at AGH. A wonderful time was had by all, especially the Chefs, Mayor Sefatia and Anthony Caturano.
The event was inspired by Chef Anthony (erroneously) referring to sugo as gravy. War was declared and a sugo cookoff to benefit charity was decided upon. See Mayor Sefatia explaining Gloucester-acceptable terms for sauce (practically anything but gravy) 🙂
