What’s Happening at I4 C2? #GloucesterMA

Jan. 10, 2023.

Before spring, DPW is managing a gas work project on Main Street between Duncan and Hancock Streets.

A temporary staging site has been set up on I4,C2 (65 Rogers St). Street signs alert drivers on Main. This job is by National Grid that has a subcontractor, Neuco.

Public Works is heavily involved in all aspects of any utility work in the city and “stays tight with projects every step of the way.”

You Asked for Schooner Fest Sunday Night Activities … We Listened

Back in 2010 we presented Celebrate Gloucester featuring Roomful of Blues at the City’s newly acquired I4-C2 property on Schooner Festival Sunday because we were told there’s nothing to do on Sunday after the race. Here we are five years later bringing Roomful of Blues back to Gloucester aboard The Beauport Princess Cruise Ship for an evening Blues CruiseĀ @ 7:30 on Schooner Festival Sunday.

The Schooner Festival has always been one of ourĀ favorite Gloucester events and we’re honored to add our little piece of cruising fun to one of the world’s major maritime spectacles!

(Hopefully) Dispelling Some Misconceptions About the HarborWalk

Gloucester Harbor Fishing Boat Jolly Roger Ā©Kim Smith 2014Window to the Working Waterfront ~ View from the HarborWalk

A little-remembered fact is that the HarborWalk artists were chosen from an applicant pool ofĀ local Cape Ann artists, as well as non-local residents. The public call to art was made over a period of several months, and it was widely publicized on this blog and in the Gloucester Daily Times. As a matter of record, myself, several fellow GMG contributors, and many artistsĀ in our community applied. The application processĀ was made fair through the CAFE system. The semi-finalists exhibited their proposals at the Sawyer Free Library.

The followingĀ are just some of the postsĀ that appeared on Good Morning Gloucester about the HarborWalk public call to art:

Announcing Opening Call for Gloucester MA HarborWalk Public Art Challenge

Joey’s step-by-step on how to apply: Public Art Call

E.J’s reminder: ArtistĀ Get Cracking – You Have Three Weeks

The GMG post about the semi-finalist group exhibit at the Sawyer Free Library.

It is my understandingĀ that withĀ a public call to art, where the funding is provided by aĀ state grant, it isĀ illegal to restrict the call to only local residents.

Whether or not you care for the artist’s work, is a horse of a different color and subjective opinion. The three winning artistsĀ were chosen by aĀ jury of their peers, comprised ofĀ a panel that includedĀ local residents.

gloucester-summer-cinema-2-c2a9kim-smith-2014Did you know that the new and fabulously well-attended Summer Cinema is part of the award winning HarborWalk? There were over one thousand attendees at Wednesday night’sĀ Leggo Movie event. Movie nightĀ hasĀ been the talk of the town amongstĀ kids throughout the city!

Have you walked one ofĀ the newĀ crosswalks? I did, and didn’t slip or fall, and I am quite possiblyĀ one of the most accidentĀ prone people you will every meet–just ask my husband. Rather than repeating hearsay, I suggest you walk one yourself.

Do youĀ recall the trash talk about Boston’sĀ Rose Kennedy Greenway when it was first builtĀ (inaugurated in 2008)? The idea of a carousel has been bandied about for the HarborWalk. Here’s Nicole Scrafft’s recentĀ lovely post about how she and her boys spent a fabulous day at the park: Now That’s a Carousel.

Many in our community have freely donated their time and energy to creatingĀ the HarborWalk and several people, who would prefer toĀ remainĀ anonymous, have donated thousands uponĀ thousands of hours of their time andĀ considerable skills toward developing the HarborWalk. There are challenges to overcomeĀ in every design project. I speak as the landscape designer who provided the horticultural master plan for the HarborWalk. This is only the third year of the HarborWalk’sĀ existence and it isĀ already proving toĀ have a tremendously positive impact on our localĀ businesses and restaurants. Let’s give the HarborWalkĀ a chance to become established, to grow, to thrive, and continue to provideĀ entertainment, education, and fun forĀ our community and visitors.

How will you help? Please contact me if youĀ wouldĀ like to become a Friend of the HarborWalk, atĀ kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com or in the comment section of this post.

Read what reporter Glenn Collins had to sayĀ about the HarborWalk in the August 13thĀ New York Time’s article titled “Polishing Its Past and Preparing Its Future.”

“This year Massachusetts designated four new cultural districts on Cape Ann, based on their museums, galleries, restaurants, performance spaces and artistic communities. Visitors can now download a free Cape Ann Cultural Districts smartphone app, to access a bonanza of web information and self-guided tours. This summer, 20 new ā€œstory posts,ā€ bringing the total to 42, afford a walking encyclopedia of information. They are affixed to granite bollards situated strategically on the route (GHWalk.org).

The posts are part of the Gloucester HarborWalk, a free, multimile, historic, civic and artistic public-access walkway that zigzags in and out of historic locales, piers, plazas, docks and parks. Call it stealth wayfinding, since it affords an intimate view of the harborfront, giving access to the townā€™s history ā€” and the water itself ā€” without disturbing the working port, or cutesifying it.”

If you have been enjoying the HarborWalk–theĀ Summer Cinema, the story moments, window to the waterfront, and all that it has to offer, please let us know. We would love to hear from you. Thank you!

Don’t miss JAWS!, playing Wednesday, August 27th. I hope to see you there!

Winter Carnival & Ice Skating on I4-C2?

This just in from Cape Ann TV’s Lisa Smith:

Will I4-C2 become a skating rink and downtown a winter wonderland? Ā Find out what Mayor Kirks thinks about thisĀ when she is interviewed by Meredith Fine on this week’s Cape Ann Report. They also discuss these topics:Ā Birdseye property development; harbor moorings; new happenings in the Gloucester Police and Fire Departments; laptops for Gloucester students and more. Ā The show airs on Cape Ann TV Channel 12: Thursday @ 6pm; Friday @ 1pm and Sunday @ 3pm. You can also watch this and other shows online here.

Winter King Planted in the Harbor Walk Gardens

Jay Ramsey with his crew Mauriocio Tuquerres and Mike Rogers planting hawthornĀ Crategus viridisĀ ‘Winter King’ at Gus Foote Park.

Yesterday Jay Ramsey and his crew planted the garden at I4-C2 and two trees at Gus Foote Park. Jay (Farm Creek Landscaping) suggested the hawthorn ā€˜Winter Kingā€™ and project architect Chris Muskopf and I agreed it was a great suggestion. Jay has had good success with ā€˜Winter King;ā€™ notably with the several he planted along a windswept bank of the Annisquam River. ā€˜Winter Kingā€™ is relatively disease and pest free (atypical for members of the Rose Family)Ā and is noted for its profusion of white flowers in May and tight clusters of bright red fruits that persist through the winter. The fruits are usually not eaten by birds until late winter.Ā Crategus viridis is tolerant of poor soils and urban conditions. Crataegus means strength and viridis refers to the greenish bark of the species, however ā€˜Winter Kingā€™sā€™ bark is more silvery.

Grants Awarded For Schematic Designs of I4-C2

Grants Awarded for Schematic Designs of I4-C2
The I4-C2, 1.8 acre waterfront parcel, has been vacant for more than forty years.Ā  In 2010, the city purchased the site with assistance from the Commonwealth’s Seaport Advisory Council, which is currently under idea development. The site is ideally located one block from Main Street and a short walking distance from well-known Gloucester attractions, including the Maritime Heritage Center, the Cape Ann Museum, and the Man at the Wheel on the Boulevard.Ā  The view of Gloucester’s spectacular working harbor from this site is breath-taking.Ā  In addition, the site will be an integral part of the Harbor Walk that has recently been funded with assistance from the Seaport Advisory Council.Ā  The city expects to break ground on the construction of the Harbor Walk in the spring of 2011.Ā
As part of the city’s harbor economic development strategy, the city encouraged the community to participate in the development of schematic designs for the I4C2 parcel.Ā  The city offered grants of $2,500 for reimbursement for schematic designs and demonstration of initial financial feasibility.Ā  18 grant applications have been approved and will contribute to this idea phase.Ā
However, with or without grant funding, all those interested are welcome to submit schematic design proposals by December 15, 2010.Ā  An opening reception and unveiling of the schematic designs will be held at City Hall in December 2010.Ā  The schematic designs will available to view on the city’s website and at City Hall through February 2011.
ā€œOur goal is for this parcel to showcase the economic future of Gloucester Harbor.Ā  Future jobs and investment will rely on the fishing industry, the maritime economy which includes the creative economy, and the visitor-based segment,ā€ said Kirk.Ā  ā€œAll are compatible with Gloucesterā€™s heritage and strengths.ā€
A formal Request for Proposals (RFP) for site development will be issued in the spring of 2011.Ā  The requirements in the RFP will draw from the best of the best ideas in the schematic designs.Ā Ā
