Topside Grill | Lemon Crush- do yourself a favor
LEMON CRUSH and a great dinner at Topside Grill last night for Gloucester’s downtown shopping Ladies Night. We had a ball! Thanks to Joe Ciolino, Weathervane–one of our first stops so we can meet Mark Parisi and grab the next Off the Mark calendar which he kindly signs– and all involved for such a festive Gloucester tradition. Our second annual stop is across the street– we make sure to buy a couple of new toys from Toodeloos for the stuff a bus toy drive parked right there.

Mayor’s Reception at Maritime Gloucester and Block Party
It was a really pretty night for last evening’s special events: the Schooner Festival Mayor’s Reception hosted at Maritime Gloucester and the Main Street Block Party.
Mayor Romeo Theken with Daisy Nell. Mayor Theken holds a new original Sam Parisi painted oar that would be auctioned off later for the Schooner Festival. I heard Senator Tarr but did not hear the results!
The connecting dock between Maritime Gloucester and Solomon Jacobs Park is awesome!
BLOCK PARTY
Stores on Main Street had the Schooner Festival spirit and even some special schooner “sales”.
And there was business at on trend Cape Ann Slime

Congratulations Topside Grill & Pub! Now serving great food, drinks and fun year round
Topside Grill & Pub, 50 Rogers Street, Gloucester, MA (978) 281-1399
Topside Grill shut down January through April, but no longer! I asked restauranteur Doug Silva what it means to Topside Grill to have a year round liquor license awarded by the licensing board?
“First of all, we are very excited and feel pretty lucky to have been selected with all the choices.” Other businesses vying for the license included: Captain Carlo’s; Jasmine Garden Restaurant; Dennis Senecal for the former Espresso location; Simon Prudenzi for the former Dog Bar space; and Karma Liquors. You can read more about the process and see a map of all MA licenses on my earlier GMG post.
“What does it mean to us? It means many things. We can stay open year round. We can hold on to our staff which will really help out with turnover. It’s great for our customers who come on a regular basis and won’t need to shift plans in the winter anymore. A year round schedule will stamp out any lingering seasonal perception that we cater solely to tourists. We’re all about local. We live downtown. We help downtown. We’re here for Gloucester and part of the community.”
And?
“It’s been super nice to hear congratulations and feedback from everyone, and so so so nice to hear from the professional community, too.”
Anything else?
“We get to play with a year round cocktail menu, too.”
If you hadn’t heard, Doug is a master mixologist. What’s popular now? Topside Grill makes a delicious homemade artisan ginger beer–fresh ginger!— refreshing on its own or shoring up a signature Moscow Mule or Dark & Stormy.
Topside Grill serves a great menu selection of seafood and steak entrees, and creative daily specials. My kids love the appetizers and delicious homemade lasagna and chicken-eggplant Parmesan which are family recipes. They think Doug is so lucky because his mom could cook these, you know, probably after school. Anytime. Just like that.
Topside Grill is part of the downtown cultural district and the Chamber. Doug serves on Gloucester’s Tourism Commission

What’s for lunch? Lobster roll at Topside Grill
Psst! It’s possible to dine outdoors at Blue Collar Lobster and then move over to I4C2 for the HarborWalk Summer Cinema. Star Wars Force Awakens tonight!
What seat should you pick at the HarborWalk Summer Cinema? Don’t worry–you’ll find a spot even though people stream into I4 C2 as early as 5:30PM to square away their seating, often novel. A family with an inflatable pool is a regular sight. Blankets are thrown down pell-mell. Kids zig zag a sea of boundaries as they might a sandy beach, which means your stuff is stepped on. It’s all good! There’s a happy community picnic vibe. Soon after 6PM Aurelia Nelson from North Shore Radio 104.9 hosts pre-screening festivities. Rob Newton, Cape Ann Community Cinema, presides; the movie line ups he’s selected have been big hits.
Gloucester = food.
Our family takes a break from cooking and buys dinner from the vendors and/or take out from a downtown business. Once house guests treated us to a lobster dinner AND movie al fresco at Blue Collar Lobster, Gloucester House. It can be done. Has anyone tried it with Topside Grill?
Part II Topside Grill Picture of the Week
Went to powder my nose at Topside Grill and what was hanging on the wall but a Rubber Duck Photo. see my post yesterday for some comments on the good grub at Topside.
Topside Grill, 50 Rogers Street, Gloucester
I wanted to make sure I could catch the Red Sox clinch the playoffs so off to Topside Grill with the bar upstairs in case dinner runs too long. Dining downstairs I forgot about the game once the mussels arrived but I only missed the first inning. (Lester was awesome, Sox win the division just like 2007!)
I’ve got weird rules for eating out. I hate it when two people order the same thing, what if it is subpar now you’re stuck with two! Never get the shark, it can be weird, stay away from pasta, shoot, pasta is always better at home.
Broke all my rules, glad we did. The Mako Shark Bites were perfect. I almost ordered them again for dessert. The mussels app was also excellent. I’ll stop saying excellent now because everything was. Two entrees of sautéed shrimp over linguini. So why was everything so good? Everything was fresh down to the tomatoes in the sautéed shrimp. The shrimp and linguini made the best breakfast cold this morning.
I should really work on getting a photo before we destroy the beautiful looking dishes.
Tomorrow I will post “The Picture of the Week” that was framed in the bathroom at Topside. Rubber Duck thought it was pretty funny. She screamed “Cuz, you don’t look so good!”
