Scenes from Literary Cape Ann special event at Cape Ann Cinema featuring Rodman Philbrick, Andre Dubus III and Stephen McCauley
Literary Cape Ann presented a terrific afternoon, Bestseller to Big Screen, featuring Rodman Philbrick, Andre Dubus III, and Stephen McCauley at Cape Ann Cinema 21 Main Street in Gloucester May 5, 2019.
The Toad Hall wheels behind Literary Cape Ann invited Beth Pocock, Asst. Director Sawyer Free Library, to moderate the first half of the program. Literary Cape Ann co-founder Rae Francoeur directed the second part. The Book Store of Gloucester set up shop to handle book sales. Cape Ann Cinema had trailers queued up and fresh popcorn pop pop popping which was offbeat and endearing. All went off without a hitch thanks to great questions, event coordination/collaboration and three dynamite authors who were frank, engaging, witty and bright. Make sure to look for the next Literary Cape Ann event.

Congratulations to the Flynn Cruiseport Boston on another record-breaking year of cruise passengers in the 2018 season. According to Tom Glynn, Massport CEO, Flynn Cruiseport Boston estimated that they welcomed 396,000 cruise passengers, 150 cruise ships and 20 different cruise lines to Boston. New MOTT trail Applechusetts features Orchards, Cideries, and More-
Leading up to the 24th annual Franklin County CiderDays festival, MOTT released Applechusetts, a guide to apple goods, experiences, and traditions across the Commonwealth. Applechusetts features pick-your-own orchards, farm stands, sweet treats, events, and cideries along with apple variety notes, recipes from local businesses, and hard cider tasting tips. Gail McCarthy features Diane Polley and Marion Hall “Celebrating a new illustrated children’s book” today’s paper
Great article about the new children’s book, Let’s Go: Animal Tracks in the Snow! by Diane Polley illustrated by Marion Hall, an award winning entry in the Cape Ann Reads contest.
Deborah French, Director of Essex’s TOHP Burnham Library says Diane Polley “is an excellent example of a hidden children’s writer that was brought together with Marion Hall, the illustrator, through the Cape Ann Reads initiative to create a wonderful picture book. I’m sure she has more to come for us all to enjoy.”
BOOK LAUNCH CELEBRATION: Saturday, Sept 8 11:30-1:30, Cape Ann Cinema & Stage, 21 Main Street, Gloucester. “This is a free family drop-in event with children’s activities. Meet Diane Polley of Essex, the author and Marion Hall of Manchester, the illustrator, who will be signing copies of their book.”
Visually stunning and original, Let’s Go Animal Tracks in the Snow, is a gentle and clever story and non-fiction picture book that engenders shared experiences. Vivid wintery scenes are intimate and expansive, and beautiful watercolors match and extend the text. Expressions of color notes pop from the pages like finding fresh tracks in new snow. This children’s book is an irresistible inside outside story: snuggle up for a good read and wondrous exploration.

vintage ABC news report
“Manchester by the Sea” is set for release November 18th– at the mall. Not sure when it’s coming to Cape Ann Cinema or Gloucester Cinema, 34 Essex Ave, Gloucester.
“Manchester by the Sea burrows into the mind of a man who experiences a trauma that neither kills him nor makes him stronger. Rather, it leaves him maimed.”
-quote from Rebecca Mead’s New Yorker article, THE CINEMATIC TRAUMAS OF KENNETH LONERGAN: After a bitter fight with Hollywood producers, the filmmaker returns with the shattering “Manchester by the Sea.” Lonergan has said he used local actors and Massachusetts crew for the shoot.
Queen of Katwe is playing at Cape Ann Cinema now. No Cape Ann ties but buzz worthy all the same.
There will be a new screening room open at Cape Ann Cinema with help from the Dusky Foundation and named with a tribute to Cape Ann Cinema fan, legendary actress and director, Liv Ullmann. Yes, that Liv Ullmann!
Nichole’s Picks 10/29 and 10/30
Pick #1: John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum
I am really hoping to get Thatcher and Finn into Boston to tour the museum sometime before next month’s election. I am a big believer that studying the election process, democracy, Checks and Balances, and the levels + branches of government during an election year is an opportunity that should not be missed. That having been said, it has been harder this go round to make it a positive learning experience….as much of it has been more of a circus than an age-appropriate lesson. I want to use the opportunity to show my boys how great America can be…but, it is hard to shield them from the drama and nonsense. So, I am hopeful that taking a trip to learn about JFK will help instill some of the pride and character that I would like them to feel and develop.
Just my two cents….

Super special offers September 24 Holland America Cruise Ship and Trails&Sails
How exciting that Holland America and Trails and Sails are coming to Gloucester and Cape Ann this weekend! There are many special offers and events to help welcome visitors. This will be the second of three big cruise ships coming into port this month to Cruiseport Gloucester. It won’t leave Gloucester harbor till 11PM. Last time I expected sight seeing, museum visits and shopping as reasons passengers disembarked. They did that. If you go by the clicker counter, 844 (give or take another hundred), plus 650 who pre-booked excursions, came ashore.

I was surprised by how many passengers from a seemingly all inclusive cruise opted to take a whale watch trip and dine out. They did that, too. I’ll report back fun facts, but today I wanted to post about the special offers and events.
Working TOGETHER to welcome everyone is a beautiful thing. Thanks to the organizers (with a big shout out to Jeanne Hennessey, Joe Ciolino, Kathie Gilson, Peter Webber, Lorre Anderson, Bob Ryan and Elizabeth Carey):
photo caption: Bob Ryan/CATA, Jeanne Hennessey, Paul Talbot at Cruiseport planning out logistics for Saturday September 24, 2016
CATA created a special map for continuous downtown trolley loops (“frequency is key”) and to Rocky Neck and Rockport. The special pass covers their bus routes. What an incredible deal! They are extending operations until 10PM. A new addition: Beauport Ambulance Services will be offering a shuttle bus for an Essex/Manchester/Cruiseport route. Kathie Gilson prepared and made hundreds of copies of a lobster roll list (a big common request), special events, and the Gimme Sound music schedule. Kudos to the volunteers, organizations and businesses for their hard work and creativity.
And now for Gloucester downtown Special events and offers. You can click logos to follow links.
