Light touch, fried haddock Dinner Daily Super specials were flying out the take-out door, and to the steady stream of diners eating in. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Miles for Meatballs today raised a whopping $4,700.00 for breast cancer!!! The event was hosted by Mayor Sefatia, Tonno’s Chef Anthony Caturano, and Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group. The Miles for Meatballs event began with a scenic tour around Cape Ann in luxury cars from the very generous Warren Waugh. The drive was followed by a fabulous late afternoon dinner at Tonno. Chef Anthony prepared his famous homemade meatballs and sausage with zugu/gravy, served over the creamiest polenta you can imagine. The homestyle, yet elegant dinner was accompanied by an outstanding Caesar salad and delicious cannolis. Every Sunday Chef Anthony serves a traditional meatball and zugu/gravy Sunday family dinner and I know where we will be having dinner next Sunday!
Thanks to Eve Parisi for sharing the Tonno-GHS fundraiser information. What a great way to spend an evening, supporting the GHS girls soccer team by having dinner at Tonno. The complete menu will be made available, and some yummy specials, too. Reservations are recommended.

The BAKE SALE at Market Basket is a fundraiser for O’Maley 8th graders annual special trip to Washington, DC. “This important fundraiser is to provide financial assistance to
those who need it most for the trip.” Items can be dropped off at O’Maley on October 27th or at Market Basket at 8:30 on October 28th. Soccer players are raising money for the soccer banquet, gifts for senior players, and the soccer program. Raffle tickets are $10 each and each packet has 10 tickets. The prizes are listed on the tickets and are for sale through October 29. Winners will be announced at the fall banquet (date/time TBD)

The traditional end of season Stage Fort Park Volunteers Thank you Lunch was held on Wednesday October 11 at Captain Carlo’s, and was hosted by the City of Gloucester, Mayor Romeo Theken, the Tourism Commission, and Captain Carlo’s. It was a lovely day and a great meal at a beautiful waterfront restaurant!

Thank them! If you’re interested in joining this fun group, ask them about volunteering and why they do it. They have great stories to share. Kathie Gilson manages the volunteers. Gilson said that many volunteers return year after year, and for the 2017 season, volunteers took on extra shifts because the Stage Fort Park Welcome Center was short on coverage. The visitor center is open to the public from May through Columbus Day weekend. It’s a busy stop for visitors to Gloucester and the region. Over the summer of 2017, volunteers helped 15,000 visitors. Some said coming to Gloucester was “on their bucketlist”, others return each and every year. Visitors came from every state. Guests from North Dakota were the last state to make the tally. The Stage Fort Park Volunteers keep a guest book. Not everyone coming through signs in or leaves a note though the ones that do write in comments about Gloucester’s beauty and its friendly residents and businesses. The park is a jewell.
Captain Carlo’s owner, Carla O’Connor, is a member of the Tourism Commission for the City of Gloucester and she organzied the event. Gloucester businesses worked together with the City to offer scrumptious local favorites: baked haddock and chowder from Captain Carlos: chicken broccoli and ziti from Causeway; and braised beef from Azorean. Desserts were from Pauline’s Gifts, Caffe Sicillia and Captain Carlo’s. Castle Manor Inn made a contribution.

It all started when Gloucester’s Joe Langhan (a founder of the Food Network) invited me to taste his pastrami. Having grown up in the pastrami capital of the world (NY), I was skeptical. But I went down to see Joe’s Beantown Pastrami operation at the Boston Public Market and had a sandwich. Instantly, I was transported! I hadn’t tasted pastrami like this since — not the last time but — 2 times ago when I went to NYC — a few years at least.
Right then, Joe and I agreed to try a Beantown Pastrami pop-up during a blues concert at our new venue, 9 Wallis, right down the road in Beverly. The first one in early August was a huge success. Joe ran out of food. So we tried it again 2 weeks later. Another hit.
Having been so popular in the evening, Joe wanted to try it for lunch (pastrami’s favorite meal) every Friday … but with a twist.
“What if you have a comedy show so people can Laugh Over Lunch (#LOL)?” he suggested.
Vickie and I LOVED the idea and together with Joe, we coined the phrase Pastromedy (Comedy + Pastrami = Pastromedy), which debuts this Friday from Noon – 2pm.
This week’s PASTROMEDY features Chris D, winner of the wildly successful Next Big Catch – North Shore Comedy Contest at 9 Wallis in July and is hosted by Gary Marino founder of the World Gone Crazy Comedy Band and owner of Harmon-Marino LIVE, which produces the comedy shows at 9 Wallis.
Joe expanded his Beantown Pastrami menu for 9 Wallis to include corned beef sandwich plates (including Reuben and Rachel) as well as turkey. All plates are served with Cape Cod Potato Chips and whole Maitland Mountain Farm pickles are available at for an extra charge.
Comedy is free.
Sooooo….have a fun lunch — and maybe start your weekend early by treating yourself to the best pastrami in New England, right down the road in Beverly. Don’t worry about the calories ’cause you’ll laugh your ass off!

Wicked Bites TV visited Essex and Ipswich in a big way this month to review “Clam Alley”. Visitors often ask what is the best place for a lobster roll? and fried clams? “Clam Alley” extends throughout Cape Ann. In Gloucester there’s Charlie’s, Gloucester House, Lobsta Land (another gorgeous marsh vista), Captain Carlo’s, the Cupboard and Lobster Pool in Rockport to name a quick few…what else?

Many of you know Joe Langhan from his work producing the Souls of the Sea videos. What you may not know is that he’s a founder of the Food Network and created its signature show Emeril Live. A couple of years ago, Joe brought world-class NY pastrami to Boston (see Globe article). Tomorrow (FRI 8/11) he’s bringing his famous Beantown Pastrami right down the road to Beverly for a pop-up at our Beverly Blues Series.
If you know us, you’ll know that we love pulling what may seem like disparate people together for an unusually fun night (e.g., book signings with music, music with stand-up comedy, comedy with dinner, etc.)
It’s hard to predict just how much fun tomorrow’s show will be as we bring together Blues Hall of Famer, Joe Moss from Chicago and the last prophet of the funky Texas blues The Willie J. Laws Band for an exceptional night of music hosted by WZLX Music Director Carter Alan (who will sign his new book The Decibel Diaries at the show).
