Clam Alley | NESN’s Wicked Bites TV visits J.T. Farnham’s, Woodman’s, Village Restaurant, Clam Box!

Wicked Bites TV visited Essex and Ipswich in a big way this month to review “Clam Alley”. Visitors often ask what is the best place for a lobster roll? and fried clams?  “Clam Alley” extends throughout Cape Ann. In Gloucester there’s  Charlie’s, Gloucester House, Lobsta Land (another gorgeous marsh vista), Captain Carlo’s, the Cupboard and Lobster Pool in Rockport to name a quick few…what else?

Folly Cove, One of Our Many Treasures

I took a short drive with my camera around sunset. Folly Cove Always looks great, but for some reason is difficult to photograph. But I pulled over anyway and took this picture. In the summer, the sun sets over Ipswich Bay at the Lobster Pool http://www.lobsterpoolrestaurant.com/main/index.php It's the only place other than Key West that the customers stop eating, stand up, and applaud the sunset.

As I was making a few photographs of the sunset over Folly Cove, I heard a babbling brook. It must have been the snow melt from across the road and the quietness of the season. I saw and photographed another angle of this that included a length of silver ribbon entangled in the bush. It made me think of all the wonderful times I've had there with my late parents, my sister (Painter Barb), and now Janet. I think of all the "eat in the rough" memorable occasions that others have had at the Lobster Pool. It's very special.

Lobster Pool is Open and Toasty

Stop by the Lobster Pool out there in the northeast corner of Cape Ann on Halibut Point. It’s open and the back deck is toasty with a fire going. I went for my favorite fried clams and fried shrimp. I’ll be back for the scallops and the lobster next weekend.

Right after they opened this past Friday, all freshly painted with new signs being lettered:

New Handpainted Flags at Paulines Gifts

Hi Joey,
Tom and Lisa from the amazing “LOBSTER POOL” restaurant have been coming into the store for many years purchasing flags. This year after no luck finding a pre-made lobster flag for the restaurant I offered to paint one for them.
Should be flying there this weekend. It was a lot of fun creating this for them.
I think after this hand painting flags will be a new item for the shop.
Thanks and hope to see you soon.

Summer Tourists, Some are not.

But Cape Ann is a tourist draw so if you don’t go with the flow you are missing out on some great fried clams, onion rings, and all sorts of other stuff to clog your arteries but what the hay it’s almost summer and winter is a long way away.

With that long intro, I want to know what seasonal restaurant is open. I love walking into a place that has been closed up all winter and the formica is all shined up and hopefully the fryolators are lubricated. Ice cream too, is there a better feeling than ordering that first mint chocolate chip from the Dairy Train in Rockport? (side note, my daughter was asking to go and I pretended to be deaf, not a real hard task, and I said “Scary Train?” and she repeated and I said “Scary Brain?” and we went on and on until she had to hit me over the head, anyway, Dairy Train is Scary Brain in our house.)

So what am I missing? I know some places are open and nobody told me. Stop that. I hate that.
So I want anyone who knows of a seasonal place that has opened or has posted the date at which they will open, send the info to me or post a reply and I will make a list and check it twice.

From my own personal ramblings I know that:
Top Dog: open
The Rudder : open Thursday-Saturday
Lobster Pool: open
Lobster Land (I mean Lobsta Land!): open
Top Siders: open (Oyster night is Tuesday night)
I’ve heard mention of this Cupboard at the end of the Boulevard and I will admit I have never eaten there. I’ve never played 18 holes of golf so sue me. But does anyone know when they might open?

Mail me or reply here, I will check it twice: paul_morrison@dfci.harvard.edu

Props To The Lobster Pool!

The Lobster Pool Restaurant took home best honors under the seafood shack category.  Thats a big honor and I love that they beat out Woodman’s.  Of course they did though, they know where to get the best lobsters!
