10 BEST FRIED CLAMS list from Yankee Mag New England today

A friend in New York just emailed me this link: 10 Best Fried Clams in New England, courtesy Yankee Magazine’s New England Today. A couple of local Cape Ann favorites made the list. The comment board is climbing fast. I have friends that swear by the Cupboard in Stage Fort Park and various restaurants in Gloucester, Rockport and Essex. Did yours make the 2018 list?

Clam Alley | NESN’s Wicked Bites TV visits J.T. Farnham’s, Woodman’s, Village Restaurant, Clam Box!

Wicked Bites TV visited Essex and Ipswich in a big way this month to review “Clam Alley”. Visitors often ask what is the best place for a lobster roll? and fried clams?  “Clam Alley” extends throughout Cape Ann. In Gloucester there’s  Charlie’s, Gloucester House, Lobsta Land (another gorgeous marsh vista), Captain Carlo’s, the Cupboard and Lobster Pool in Rockport to name a quick few…what else?

Wicked Bites is scheduled on Saturdays at 9:30am on NESN. From their sites:

Hey, you better be ready for the next ALL NEW Wicked Bites TV. On today’s show we visit CLAM ALLEY for the very best fried clams in the world. And, we have some special guest: Kim Gilder Carrigan and VB from the WRKOmorning show.”

“Oh, the fried clam! Mike Wendt hits Essex, Massachusetts at J.T. Farnhamsfor fried clams, seafood and some incredible fish tacos.”

Wicked Bites reviewed the Village Restaurant (Sept 2016) and Causeway (Sept 2016)

Discover Gloucester at the State House today!

Elizabeth Carey shares photos and a note with GMG:

“Today is Tourism Day at the Massachusetts State House. Each year tourism leaders from through the Commonwealth gather together to celebrate the tourism industry. There were many in attendance including Ann Marie Casey Executive Director of the NBCVB. Kate Fox of Destination Salem. Corey Atkins State Rep. Tom Kershaw of Cheers with Steve and Rhonda of Woodman’s.”- Elizabeth Carey, Discover Gloucester

Thanks so much, Elizabeth for sharing your photos from the State House. Many of the participants attended last evening’s 20th Anniversary gala at Peabody Essex Museum for Essex National Heritage. Ann Marie was there despite revving up to MC this annual State House conference–she was selected by her many colleagues for that role.

MA Film and Television opportunities, State Director Lisa Strout speaks at Woodman’s

The North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau (NBCVB) and Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a special visit featuring Lisa Strout, the Director of the Massachusetts State Film Office.

Woodman’s Essex Room served a lovely luncheon– great chef and venue for events. (I wish I had a second raspberry tart.)

Lisa talked about film and media production in the state and how her department works with cities and towns. The crowd was mostly North Shore but I did speak with people who drove from Lowell, the Cape and western Massachusetts.

Surprising locations are shot here in MA and passed off as elsewhere. Mt. Fuji stood out as one example.

The mostly business crowd reacted favorably upon hearing that Disney engaged more than 1500 MA vendors for one movie production.

Speaking of vendors: Woodmans called out a list of vendors they work with who have generously contributed to their scholarship fund. You can see that on the back of their anniversary clam sign.

Have You Picked Up Your Summer Issue of Cape Ann Magazine?

What a terrific issue and the perfect read to bring to the beach (and not just because my story about the Cape Ann to Mexico Monarch connection is featured on the cover!).

Cape Ann Magazine’s Summer 2014 issue provides a wonderful window into summer living on our beautiful North Shore. I throughly enjoyed reading all the articles, including Gail McCarthy’s about Essex sculptor Shelly Bradbury and the beautiful work she does designing for Mariposa; Alexandra Pecci’s two articles, one about Mariposa, aptly titled “Elegance for Everday,” and a second interesting story about Woodman’s celebrating their 100th year in business; Andrea Holbrook’s story featuring Gloucester’s only sailmaker Josh Bevins; and Sean Horgan’s article about tuna-chasing Johnny Johnson. Pick up the Summer 2014 issue of Cape Ann Magazine. I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed!

Luxuriating before work with Cape Ann Magazine’s summer issue and Brother’s Brew fab house-made doughnut!

Excerpt from “Cape Ann to Mexico: The Monarch Butterfly Connection”

Like many communities throughout North America, Cape Ann shares in the interconnected web of the wondrous migration of the monarch butterfly. The very same monarchs that we see nectaring in our gardens and along the shoreline in late summer make a journey of over 2,500 miles south to Mexico to spend the winter in the unique and magnificent oyamel fir and pine tree forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, known locally as the Sierra Nevada (Snowy Mountain Range).

Last December, reports began to pour in from Mexican and American scientists that the number of monarchs overwintering was the lowest ever documented, representing a 90% decline from population numbers recorded in the 1990s. This coincided with the lamentably few monarchs seen breeding and feeding in our Cape Ann gardens during the summer of 2013. For the past three years I have been filming the monarchs in Gloucester, and all around Cape Ann, for my forthcoming film, Beauty on the Wing—Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly. I came to the realization that if I did not travel to Mexico at this moment in time, there may never again be the opportunity to film the monarch butterfly migration.

Essex at Dawn- 4:30AM 6/26/09

This is the Essex River and Hog Island, directly across the street from where the Adam Sandler movie “Grown Ups” was being filmed last week.  I went early in the morning and set up the tripod at 4:30 AM to take this dawn picture and to get a feeling for how accessible the set of Woodman’s was going to be.  I didn’t feel like getting tossed from the set like the day before.  So as I saw folks coming and going and I took this picture, I popped my head in to see the crew of people working like mad to put the inside of Woodman’s back together after filming all last week inside the building.

Adam Sandler Movie Grown Ups Set Location Update- Woodmans Essex, Ma 4:37AM 6/26/09

Yesterday morning I went back to Woodman’s to get some pictures when everyone was asleep or there was a skeleton crew but to my surprise there was a crew of about 20 people working feverishly to put the place back together to reopen for the weekend after filming all last week.
