Message from Danielle ~

Three and a half years ago, I decided to take the biggest risk of my life and open up my shop in a tiny 800 sq. ft. space that was originally a shared space. My cool retro display case broke the first day, half the shapes were extruded and half the shapes were made completely by hand, and I even tried a little tricolore up at the top.

I’ve since refined, worked on my Italian language skills, educated myself more on regional Italian cuisine and family recipes, visited with numerous farmers and artisans here and in Italy, as well as meet and feed some of the most wonderful people in my community.

It’s super exhausting, challenging and tiring. But I love this more than you could ever imagine. Having the opportunity to educate and put real food on your tables has been my life goal. What I’m saying is, holy shit, the store has changed since the beginning, now I’m on Main Street, selling real Italian provisions from @gustiamo and natural wines from @selectionaturel . My importers and I have the same values and views. We work so hard as outcasts to deliver you the real message and passion of the people behind your food and wine.

Updated my website, check it out. I now am not just a pasta shop, but a provisions + natural wine shop too. Wow, to believe I built this with my two hands is not worthy of thanking all the people that helped me along the way….especially my customers – we have created a serious movement, thank you for coming into the shop. The power of the consumer is REAL!

Located at 123 Main Street, Suite 1, in historic downtown Gloucester.

Hours:

Open Wednesday-Sunday  11 AM to 7-ish PM

Closed Monday & Tuesday

The moral of the story is Danielle pretty much lives at the shop. Give us a ring if you’re heading out and you’d like to place your order in advance and/or you think you might miss us.

The Bragas’s highly anticipated second stand alone restaurant, the new Italiano Restaurant and Bar, will be opening at 64 Main Street well before people flock to our coast this summer. The former space of La Trattoria is being transformed by RS Construction which also built the Dunkin Donuts in Magnolia and the Azorean’s gorgeous bar expansion and function addition. The new restaurant has been under major construction for months because the build out is much more than a revamp.  The small kitchen is GONE. The entire former function space in the back is a brand spanking new kitchen.

In a city of incredibly good eats how do you make yours stand out?

An excellent reputation helps: the Bragas opened Azorean in 2007 which quickly established a legion of loyal customers with its unique and exceptional cuisine. Besides quality, hard work and experience how about that awesome historic West End location. Italiano Restaurant joins a tipping point where Gloucester’s West End meets Boston’s North End. Italy Magazine I propose your next article in the series, Where to find Italy in America?- Gloucester’s West End! FABULOUS UPCOMING WINE DINNER AT PASSPORTS AND CHECK OUT THE NEW ART WORK ON DISPLAY

dscf4337My husband and I like to make it to every wine dinner event at Passports because it is a wonderful opportunity to taste outstanding and delicious entrees, appetizers, and wines that we wouldn’t ordinarily try. For example, I LOVE Passport’s lobster roll and think it is the absolute best around. So that’s what I usually have when there and it is always fabulous. At their upcoming wine dinner, which is this coming Thursday, September 22nd, the first course is Captain Joe’s lobster in sherry cream sauce with Pastaio’s handmade campenelle pasta. Doesn’t that sound simply splendid? Each course at Passport’s wine dinners are paired with a thoughtful selection of excellent wines, and with the lobster, we will be enjoying Stags Leap Chardonnay from Chef Eric’s special reserve. Come, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!!

September Wine Dinner

1st Course: Captain Joe’s lobster in sherry cream sauce over Pastaio’s handmade campenelle pasta, served with Stags leap Chardonnay.

3rd Course: Pepper crusted Brandt beef tenderloin, grilled polenta, radish and tomato Béarnaise with Rodney Strong Brother’s Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon.

4th Course: Pumpkin pie, from locally grown pumpkins, and pistachio crumble, with Argyle, Vintage Brut.

To reserve a seat and for more information on the September Wine Dinner call 978-281-3680.

Who Fishes Matters

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market and Seafood Throwdown and last night’s competition did not disappoint. Local chefs Eric Lorden, owner of Passports Restaurant, and Danielle Glantz of Pastaio Via Corta joined forces (dubbing themselves the Center Street Chefs) to compete against David Gauvin of Addison Gilbert Hospital and Todd Shopkowski of SnapChef.

The mystery fish, revealed moments before the competition began, was caught by Al Cottone, Captain of the Sabrina Maria. Fresh, whole, beautiful and fabulous whiting, alternately named Silver Hake, was presented to the chefs and off they went through the market shopping for farm fresh local ingredients. With only fifteen minutes to shop and an hour to prepare, the race was on!

Celebrity and very special guests included Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante, Gloucester Fisherman’s Wives Association President Angela Sanfilippo, former Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk (now the Deputy Secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office), lobsterman Mark Ring, author and Gloucester Times food writer Heather Atwood, and Maria and Sal DiStefano. DSCF0277
