HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY AND THANK YOU SO MUCH MONARCH FRIENDS!

Thank you so much dear butterfly friends for sharing Beauty on the Wing trailer. As I am writing this post, the new trailer just hit 600 views. That is quite wonderful as it has only been three days since we first shared the trailer and because unlike YouTube where if you watch only a few moments of a video it counts as a hit, with Vimeo, you have to watch it all the way through to be counted. By sharing the trailer and generating many views, you are truly helping when festival judges are viewing our submission.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!!!

I couldn’t resist sharing the above photo from Alisa Marie, a member of the terrific group “The Beautiful Monarch,” administered by the very knowledgeable Holli Hearn.

Image Processing 101: Post Production Processing for Photographers

Image_Processing_101-4_Sessions-webGraphic.jpg
This is a seminar for professional, fine art, and hobbyist photographers who want to learn all of the essential tools in Adobe Bridge, Camera RAW , and Photoshop used to get perfect images every time. We learn a process for file management and image editing that saves time while ensuring quality.
This is a chip to print seminar (not a ‘how to shoot photos’ seminar). The seminar is presented in four 90 minute sessions by James Eves of Cape Ann Giclée. He draws upon more than 30 years of working in Digital Imaging. In each session we refine our understanding of File Management, Image Resolution, and Image Editing.
This seminar is for beginners/intermediate. Prerequisite is a good working knowledge of computers. This class is taught on a Mac but all functions will work on a PC. Much of the lessons can be applied in Adobe Lightroom.

March 10 Session 1:

In this first 90 minute session we adjust a few camera settings to improve quality and help streamline file
management. We jump into Adobe Bridge to learn the tools to quickly establish a file management system, protect our images with embedded © copyright, and learn some batch processing that saves time. Using Adobe Bridge we manage many files, that could take hours, in minutes. The files are prepped for editing and tagged
to be easily found later. Proper file management at the beginning will save time later on.

March 17 Session 2:

In Session 2 we get right into Camera Raw and learn the environment, tools and a powerful editing process that can be applied to every image we ever shoot. We learn color theory via James’ ‘Kindergarten Color Theory’ (You learned everything you need to know about color in kindergarten). Color editing is easy once you know the right approach. We learn about constructive vs. destructive tools, sharpening, selective color, lens correction and more.

March 24 Session 3:

In Session 3 we refine our skills and understanding in Camera Raw on a variety of images. Most of this session is dedicated to learning the subtleties of tools of editing in Camera RAW under a wide range of Image types. In the end we learn Batch Image editing, turning hours of editing into just minutes.

March 31 Session 4:

In Session 4 We bring our select images into Adobe Photoshop and refine them into works of art. We learn cropping and aspect ratios and we perfect our images with retouching techniques and local area color editing. We fully understand image resolution and how to save files for the web and print.

Mother Goose genius design | 1938 rotating sculpture by artist Richard H. Recchia and Sam Hershey WPA mural Rockport Public Library #RockportMA

The Rockport Public Library maintains a wonderful art collection. When visiting the temporary Once Upon a Contest: Selections from Cape Ann Reads in the children’s room and the special Betty Allenbrook Wiberg installation, don’t miss the genius Mother Goose 1938 bronze by Richard H. Recchia, and the Sam Hershey WPA-era mural, Rockport Goes to War, 1939.

The new Josh Falk mural (2019) is behind the Rockport Public Library.

Photos & video clip: Catherine Ryan

Genius design bronze by Richard H. Recchia, Mother Goose, 1938

at the Rockport Public Library

This impression is annotated by the artist as a “sketch model sculpture by R. H. Recchia” (1888-1983). The sculpture rotates to illustrate the rhymes and beautifully expresses how children are captivated by stories. The sculpture is a tribute to his wife, Kitty Parsons (1889-1976), artist & writer, and one of the original founders of Rockport Art Assoc. It was originally situated within the library’s former smaller digs: the Rockport’s Carnegie Library established in 1906, a Beaux-Arts beauty around the corner, now a private home. It was one of 43 Carnegie libraries built in Massachusetts.  In 1993 the library moved to its current site in an 1880s mill building, the Tarr School, thanks to the Denghausen bequest.

Parsons & Recchia resided and worked at their home “Hardscrabble” at 6 Summer Street in Rockport. (Rockport was their permanent address from 1928 till his death.) Recchia was born in Quincy. His dad was a stone carver from Verona who worked for Bela Pratt and Daniel Chester French. Later, Recchia was Pratt’s assistant.

For more bas relief examples by Recchia, see his Bela Pratt in the Yale collection, digitized entry here ) Recchia public sculptures are on permanent display at the Rockport Art Association & Museum. More photos below.

Blast from the Recent Past

I’ve been going through older photo albums (yes, I have such things) looking for something and I ran across some pictures of our trips to Gloucester in 2003 and 2004. The sharp-eyed among you will notice a few differences just in the past 16-17 years in these iconic scenes. I hope you enjoy this little trip down recent memory lane!
