Thursday night, after the Horribles Parade and/or the fireworks, why not stop by then Rhumb Line for some good old New Hampshire blues. I’ve got some new cats comin’ in from the hinterlands for a dose of that good old dancing’ music. First, there’s “Lonely” Gus Carlson, on guitar and vocals. Don’t know why he’s lonely; mebbe you can find out. He’s a killer! And he’s bringing along his goombah, Mr. Rick Rousseau, on drums, another fine vocalist. Cowpie Bingo contest at 8:30 sharp!
Vickie and Peter Van Ness report-
The Gloucester Fireworks Committee just cancelled tomorrow’s fireworks due to weather predictions (see Gloucester Times article here), but the Horribles Parade and free concert are still on in the hopes that weather will clear up.
Music featuring Cape Ann Big Band and The Runaround Sound will begin after the parade passes by the Boulevard stage (probably around 7:00pm) and continue until 11:00pm with a spectacular laser light show somewhere in between.
So come out and enjoy the parade and free concert. Let’s show all those people visiting from out of town that bad weather predictions aren’t enough to spoil our fun!
Our spot is secure in front of 41 Western Ave on the Boulevard. PRIME TIME HORRIBLES VIEWING! Bring your beverages a dish and beach chairs and let’s enjoy each other’s company. You can drop off your beach chairs now so you don’t have to carry them tonight. Look for the black fish tote with the GMG stickers. That’s the spot.
Just stop by The Carl’s to for a quick pre-party cocktail… a steady stream of their guests were also stopping by to drop off food, and adult spirits for this evening’s “Party of the Summer!”
2 4.4oz Lindt White Chocolate bars
11/2 cups fresh blueberries
12 oz. fresh raspberries
Mini baking cups
1 melt both bars white chocolate in double boiler pan; stir until completely melted; carefully transfer “hot” melted chocolate to pastry bag fitted with Wilton #5 or #18 pastry tip *Note~ I highly recommend wearing oven mitts when fixing 1/2 teaspoon hot chocolate into cups”
2 line cookie sheet with mini baking cups; fix ½ teaspoon melted chocolate into each cup; top with 1 blueberry and 1 raspberry; drizzle white chocolate over tops; chill till ready to serve
*Note~ will keep refrigerated 24 hours

They have changed the date from Friday July 4th to Saturday July 5th. Parade still starts at 6pm. Line up is at 4pm at the High School.
Hope to see everyone there!

Hi Joey,
With Tropical Storm/maybe Hurricane Arthur approaching, I thought GMG readers might be interested in some of the raw data available from the National Weather Service. Most weather related information that is available on the internet and in the media is rooted in information from the NWS, because they aggregate collected weather data from all over the world and share it publicly as a gavernment service. NWS runs the National Hurricane Center, a site that serves up raw unadulterated weather data related to Hurricanes and Tropical Storms that’s free from any commentary. This is a great tool if you are into tracking the weather as it happens directly from the source.
When you land on the NHC homepage, you will be presented with a map that has each active tropical storm’s and hurricane’s current position on the map. Choose the storm you want to track and click on it [on the map]. Clicking the storm will bring you to a page that has all kinds of data on the storm, with maps that will show storm surge predictions, surface wind info, wind speed probability, history and all kinds of other data. Keep an eye out for the Warnings/Cone Interactive Map, it’s the familiar map with the projected storm path, but includes coastal warning information as well.
· Here’s a link for the overview page for Arthur: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?5-daynl#contents
· Here’s a link to the large tracking map for Arthur: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?gm_track?large#contents
These pages use aggregated data to generate the maps and reports available, but if you’re really geeky, I would suggest a visit to the Observations – Radial Search page. There you can input the center of your search area [latitude & longitude] and the distance and time period you would like to search in all directions from that point. The search result will spit out a table of weather observations from the given time range. Data sources would include buoy data, C-MAN station data, Drifting Buoys, Ships and other sources (like lighthouses). Weather information included in the raw data is wind speed and direction, peak gusts, wave height, wave frequency and wave energy, barometric pressure (and trend) at sea level, air temperature, sea surface water temp , visibility, tide, water depth of reporting station, and some stations will even report swell activity.
· Radial Search Page for Arthur: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/radial_search.php?storm=at1

Enjoy!

GAAC July Meeting, “Astrophotography From Beginner to Expert”
The 8:00 pm Friday July 11 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club is a free astrophoto festival, filled with outstanding photos of planets, and immense, distant, colorful galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters, shown on GAAC’s 100 inch screen! The meeting will feature in-person presentations by four outstanding photographers, showing off their best work, and an introduction by our own Steve K, who will demonstrate how simple astrophotography can be for beginners.
Photographers Mario Motta, Phil Orbanes, John Hobbs and Barry Yomtov will each present their ten favorite pictures, and will talk briefly about what the objects are, how far away they are, how big, and a little about why and how each person got that shot.
This will be a spectacular, colorful night, with great presenters, and we’ll have a wonderful time getting a rare, entertaining and accessible look into the world of astrophotography. Many of the photographs can be previewed in the Gallery section of the club website, at http://gaac.us/
The club meets on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street Lanesville, from 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Parking is free. The public is warmly welcomed and there is no cost. More information is available through the website, or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage or in the club twitter feed, @gaactweet.
