The Hip Abduction
My View of Life on the Dock
Hi Joey ___
REDBIRD’s long migration from San Francisco via Portsmouth, VA is now complete. She is now a year-round resident of Cape Ann. This beautiful schooner had been kept in the builder’s family until Daisy Nell and Captain Stan brought her to town for the first time last Saturday.
Welcome!

Hi Joey ____
The upcoming Schooner Festival got some notice at Mystic Seaport last month at the WoodenBoat Show. Here’s Capt. Nicholas Alley, schooner BRILLIANT, signing up for a return visit this year.
BRILLIANT, owned and operated by Mystic Seaport, is one of the world’s most beautiful classic boats. Keeping her in tip top condition is no small challenge, and the Seaport depends on income from charters to defray expense. When she visits Gloucester BRILLIANT is forgoing income more easily earned in her home port. Right now she has six berths available for the trip to Gloucester and eight for the return. A trip on BRILLIANT with her congenial and capable crew is a truly great experience. Here’s a link to her website.

I got this photo of BRILLIANT heading back to Mystic after last year’s Schooner Festival. And by the way, Capt. Alley is a previous winner of the Mayor’s Race here when he was in command of VIRGINIA.

1988: US warship shoots down Iranian airliner
An American naval warship patrolling in the Persian Gulf has shot down an Iranian passenger jet after apparently mistaking it for an F-14 fighter. All those on board the airliner – almost 300 people – are believed dead. The plane, an Airbus A300, was making a routine flight from Bandar Abbas, in Iran, to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The USS Vincennes had tracked the plane electronically and warned it to keep away. When it did not the ship fired two surface-to-air missiles, at least one of which hit the airliner. Navy officials said the Vincennes’ crew believed they were firing at an Iranian F14 jet fighter, although they had not confirmed this visually . |

For the Chief, and anyone who wants a quick and easy reference on how to tell the difference between the Snowy and Great Egrets, both white and both often times found feeding in the marsh and tide pools together. The Great Egret is greater in size and has a bright yellow bill, with black legs and black feet. The smaller Snowy Egret has the opposite markings, with unmistakeable cadmium yellow feet and a black bill.

Snowy Egret and Great Egret
In the above photo taken this morning, the egrets were too far away for my camera’s lens to get a really clear picture however, when cropped, you can see a side-by-side comparison. The Snowy Egret, with black bill and bright yellow feet, is flying in the background and the Great Egret, with black feet and yellow bill, is perched.

On August 16th at the Berkshire Museum they’ll be showing a double header of sorts. Earlier in the afternoon at 2:00pm is a presentation of my program on how to attract butterflies and pollinators to your garden, titled “The Pollinator Garden,” followed by a showing of my film Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, followed by a Q & A. The event is part of the “Butterflies” exhibit currently on display at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield. I hope you can come join me!

In the above photo, the orange horn-like structure at the top of the caterpillar’s head is called an osmeterium. When the caterpillar is distressed, it everts the osmeterium. The osmeterium is thought to be a mimic of a snake’s tongue and is a defense against would-be predators such as birds. Additionally, a horrible smelly odor is released from the osmeterium, which can be smelled from a distance of up to ten feet away, and is yet another defense mechanism!

Joey,
Did someone say “the new playground equipment has arrived”? It’s a HUGE week in the renovation of Burnham’s Field in central Gloucester. Here’s your Burnham’s Field renovation video update.

Hi Joey,
I know this is long but it’s important information. Please share if you can.
Governor Patrick recently declared July as Hurricane Preparedness month and MEMA is following suit with tools and information relative to tropical storms and hurricanes. The press release includes some links that are very useful and informative on this issue.
Dave says,
It’s a buzzer beater with my missive this time around: what with house guests and emergency cosmetic surgery, I simply don’t know where the time has gone. If you find it, send it back, postpaid, and I’ll buy you a cherry phosphate. So, let’s go!!
This Thursday at the Rhumb Line we feature that glottal gurgler and all-around nice guy, Mr. Dennis Brennan. A fabulous vocalist and harpist, you oughta see what he can do when I’m not around! He’s bringing along his fleet-fingered stunt double in the form of Mr. Matt Stubbs, on gootar, to add a lot of electrical spice, and Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett to stir the pot.I’ll be on soup bone!

And Sunday evening, from 5 to 8, I’ll be down at the Brew Pub cringing whilst backing up a fabulous singer: Ms. Maureen Benson. Backed up by a bunch of the Old Salties, this portends to be a groovie evening of standards from the good old American Schlongbook. Come and say Hi!
And don’t forget Monday at the Rose Biker Senior Center, where the Good Old Salties rule from 1 to 3. C’mon down and get your pacemakers recharged!

I was talking with a friend the other day about how our young children are like little sponges and we shared stories about the crazy amounts of information that they are able to learn…and I remembered this little video.
I count my blessings every day that Thatcher and Finn are in love with learning and that they appreciate all that is being introduced to them at the Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School.
Thatcher took this video of Finn practicing a song that he learned to remember all of the countries in Africa….and then it leads into his actual performance with his Preschool class….during which, he clearly needs to pee and it appears he is breaking a sweat trying to remember the words. He is also busting out some of his father’s mad dance moves 🙂 Undeniably my husband’s child.
And…along those same lines…
