Participating artists Cape Ann Art Show Beauport Hotel Gloucester

Here is a digital who’s who catalogue with portraits of the participating artists and scenes from the inaugural Cape Ann Art Show at the Beauport Hotel Gloucester, MA. The art fair and the hotel were jumping on this gorgeous evening. Original works of art (not reproductions) were priced under $100 and up from there. The artists and the hotel were so well prepared and joyous, I was compelled to record their effort. Apologies if I missed anyone. I jotted down contact information and linked to artists when possible.

New public art: LOOK UP downtown! Ken Riaf’s Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign, last chance to see group show at Trident, wall mural on Parsons HarborWalk

Hi Joey,

Look up downtown if you haven’t yet seen the wonderful Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign designed and project-boosted by artist and dealer, Ken Riaf. Then head on into his Jeffrey Marshall exhibit Law & Water Gallery.

I bet you’ve seen that Ed Touchette painting catching your eye through Trident’s window—last days to see the group exhibit at Trident Gallery. Just one week away from Ed Touchette’s solo exhibit at Trident. East Gloucester and Veterans School parents please get ready to bring your kids to see his exhibit. East Gloucester kids can find an Mr. Touchette throwback tucked away on East Main. Here’s a snapshot – try and find it.

Pass through Parsons down to Rogers or up to Main to see the progress of the artists of Art Haven/Hive. Their wall mural along a private building of Parsons Street is coming along and their depiction of Man at the Wheel is filling in…check it out! We have cleaned and scrubbed out graffiti on many walls, more than once, and are happy to see new public art added alongside the temporary FISH NET street mural and Dress Code’s.

I’m not sure what artist, Bob Stephenson, would have thought of the latest mural, but I wish he could have seen it. I do know he liked the Calderwood Fish Net mural and was grateful to have the graffiti painted out, the lights installed and anytime we swept and weeded.

Special thanks this week to the folks with Dan Leaman Landscaping and Maintenance Corp for extra clean up and weeding along Parsons Street.

The late Paul Frontiero Sr. Art Exhibit continues 2014.

Thanks to all who came out for the opening back in September. I had a great time talking to everyone about my Dad’s Artwork and Life. I was surprised to meet his collectors from years ago. Some came from far away to view and purchase a painting. My Dad would’ve been so happy.  Thanks again, Paul Jr.

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting

The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.

He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.

Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.

Paul Frontiero Sr. Exhibit at State of the Art Gallery on Rocky Neck

You all know and love ArtRocks! Paul Frontiero, Jr. and his artwork, but did you know that his father, Paul Frontiero, Sr. was an exceptional oil painter.  There is an exhibit of his work at the State of the Art Gallery at 4 Wonson Street on Rocky Neck (next to the Cultural Center), with an Opening Reception on Saturday, August 31 from 2:00-6:00pm.  The exhibit runs August 18-September 23.  Gallery is open Thursdays-Sundays from noon to 5:00pm.  It is a lovely space and the exhibit is beautiful.  If you can’t make the opening, do stop by and see the exhibit on one of their open days.

Paul Frontiero (1925- 2012)

Paul Frontiero was born and brought up in Gloucester, a native of the Cape Ann area.  Paul not only comes from a long line of fishermen ancestry but was a fisherman himself, for over half of his life-time.

He fished from as far south as the Diamond Shoals of the Carolina’s to as far north as the Grand Banks off St. John’s, Newfoundland and Canada.

The many hours Paul spent in the small dories made him realize the expansiveness of the sea, at times so calm and then again a raging fury.  Although he painted other subject matter, most of his paintings are of his life on the sea.  As a boy on the boats, he would often rough pencil sketch on anything that was at hand – paper bags, old wooden planks, and even on the side of the same dories that he spent so many hours on.  Each and every painting has a spiritual quality that reveals Mr. Frontiero’s deep love for the sea.

Mr. Frontiero maintained a year-round gallery off of Highway 128 in Gloucester for many years.
