Nights on the Neck Photos by Len Burgess

July 2014 NOTN_Len Burgess Photos

We had a fun first Nights on the Neck for 2014, in spite of some last minute cancellations by performers.  Len Burgess got some wonderful shots of Three Sheets to the Wind at Trefry Park, Ernie Pigeon at Goetemann Gallery (doesn’t it look like Ernie is sitting in front of windows looking out at the water? – Gordon’s paintings are amazing), Bird Mancini performing by the Rocky Neck Accommodations, Pat Conlon and Fran Clark at the Rocky Neck Gallery.  Unfortunately missing are shots of T Max at the Cultural Center.

Great shots.  Thanks Len.

If you’re not on vacation, find an excuse to take tomorrow off

There’s so much going on tomorrow that it’s just not a good day to be at work.

Gloucester’s Sidewalk Bazaar kicks off at 9am and must be better than ever — otherwise why would our boy Joey represent?

Click here to download the complete Sidewalk Bazaar Schedule

The Farmer’s Market starts at 3pm at Stage Fort Park — remember it’s ON, regardless of the weather.  And the knife guy (forgot his name) will be there this week.  I’m bringing my precious Sabatier French knife that I got in 1974 so he can fix the curve, which I have not been able to maintain properly because I only have a stone, not a grinder.  More on that later . . .

At 6:30pm Allen Estes and Fly Amero will be on the Schooner Lannon for a gorgeous Sunset Music Sail.  Call 978-281-6634 for tickets.  Seeing these two aboard the Lannon is a must.  No mics, no amps, no speakers.  You know you’re in the presence to world-class musicians when there’s literally nothing between you and the sound of voices and guitars.

For all of you who won’t fit on the Lannon, check out Nights on the Neck, which starts at 5pm.  This week you can see singer/songwriter and Noise founder/editor T Max at 8:45.

And of course there’s the Harbor Loop Concert starting at 6:30 — always a good time –and you can bring your kids and watch them dance.  If you video your kids dancing (or other kids) put it up on YouTube and paste the link in a comment to this post.  We’ll show it to all of Gloucester.

If that’s not enough, six other venues have music of all kinds.

But let’s not forget about tonight!  Fly Amero is back from Larry Hoppen’s memorial service and will host the great Inge Berge at Rhumbline.  Marina Evans joins Dennis Monagle at Minglewood.  Steve Caraway hosts an open mic at Catch 22 …

Whew!  I could go on and on.  See the complete live music schedule here.

What to do on the 5th of July

The 4th is yesterday, but Summer has just begun and the Gloucester music scene is in full swing.  Start out at Nights on the Neck at 5pm with Mamadou Diop.  Just in case you’ve never seen him, check out the video below:

Then there’s great music all night long with Special Guest Evan Goodrow joining Dave Sag’s Blues Party at the Rhumb Line at 9:30.  See sample of Dave Sag below:

Make a night of it!  See the full live music lineup here.

Why do they call this the Kenny Neal(s) Band?

Why the (s)?  Watch the video and see how long it takes you to figure it out.  If you don’t get it after 20 seconds, have another cup of coffee . . .

Kenny will be at the Gloucester Blues Festival.  It won’t be long before the sun heats things up around here and you’ll be at the beach, Fiesta, whatever … where you might forget that you can save $12 by getting tickets ahead of time, so get tickets now and stop worrying.

If you don’t remember who’s playing, click here for our video introducing the performers.

Our local music scene is already hot with 10 live music choices tonight (more really, because Nights on the Neck alone has 6 live shows between 5 and 8:45 and we only list them once — see their full schedule here).

And let’s not forget Bradley Royds begins his Thursday Night Series at Giuseppe’s.

We’ve been getting new listings all week long so click here to see the new updated music lineup.

Young Artist of the week!

This young artist of the week is a very talented 14-year-old photographer  named Sarah. Sarah does digital and darkroom photography, and did a great series of graffiti photography last fall for the TAG gallery opening [one pictured below]. Above are some of her photos on display at Nights on the Neck last summer, but you can see more of her work at the TAG gallery at 180B Main St.

If you know of a young artist that should be featured here, email dawn.gadow@gmail.com  with a short description and a photo of some of their work!

Hello Joey !
I met you briefly at the BEAUX ARTS BALL not too long ago -I was the Queen of Spades ! Jim Dowd had said he would contact you about videoing our 5 minute event , but I think he’s gone off working in Chicago, and may have forgotten.

At 8:30 , in front of Gully Hand’s studio, myself and 17 kids from in and around Rocky Neck will be donning battery-pack Xmas lights , and moving around to a wonderfully upbeat piece of music !  The kids are age 3-14. The piece is less than 5 minutes. We’d love it if you’d record it – what do you think ?

Rocky Neck Art Colony Presents- Nights On The Neck This Thursday-

image

Gloucester -  The Rocky Neck Art colony presents an evening of performance and entertainment from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. at Nights on the Neck, Thursday, August 5, 2010, on Rocky Neck.

Performers and entertainers include:

Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.

Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event.

Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.

Catherine Strisik has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim.

Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.
