I first noticed the Bike Lane on Rogers Street while driving home Saturday night after the Block Party. Today, I saw it again on Stacy Boulevard while leaving the Waterfront Festival. It runs the entire length of the Boulevard, but not on all of Rogers Street. I’m not used to dealing with innovation, except for a few trips thru Boston. I automatically drove my car in between the center line and the Bike Lane line. I think it’s a great idea.

Last night I noticed that the bike lane on Rogers Street now extends all the way to the traffic light at East Main Street. Today’s Gloucester Times has an excellent article on the new bike lanes.

One thing stood out for me: “Painted lanes for bikes have been shown to reduce traffic accidents by 50 percent, cutting the frequency of crashes in half. City Project Manager Steve Winslow, also a cyclist, said state data found “a pattern of crashes” in the downtown areas where he plans to implement the lanes.”

It’s a great idea, but since it is only on one side of the street, are bikers supposed to use it no matter which way they are headed? Is it wide enough for two bikers if they meet head on? (I have a feeling that I will find out very soon…)

Excellent Post – Enforcement wise out west and overseas, the only problem I saw with any bike lanes is the sometimes passing on the left use by motorcycles, motorized scooters. And as in like this pciture shows lane passing parked vehicles sudden door opening OUCH if looking out into bay or distracted, think that is up to $100.00 Fine MA State?

This morning, on the way to meet with the Drive by Samaritans and their moms, including Mayor Kirk, I saw dotted lines marking a new lane on Rogers Street. The new bike lanes will be on the opposite side from the existing lane. So bike traffic will move in both directions in separate lanes. Rogers Street is wide enough to accommodate this.

Bike lanes have appeared on Main Street. I saw them from Manual Lewis Way to Pleasant Street, with the bicycle icons extending to Jalapenos. We can assume the lanes will continue to the end of Main, and they are on the North, or even numbered side of the street.
