I need to post this now before we lose the smokestack at Cape Ann Tool as the landmark in the background. I have this postcard in the mail but this is off the website I bought it from:

A weird ghostly face of a woman sticking out of the ground high above Pigeon Cove. This must have been taken prior to 1930 or so when the trees on top of Pigeon Hill had not grown back yet. With a little bit of exploring and lining up of the smokestack Rubber Duck found it:
I think the town needs to clear the brush just a little bit around the rock so we can get a good look at it. The postcard is taken from a little more to the left and back but the overgrowth is too much and you would not see the profile if I stood in the same place as the old photographer. I spoke to a Cover who remembers playing on the rock as a kid when it stood in a cleared field.

I think the smokestack’s sturdy construction was more than they bargained for. Only part of the upper black section has been removed. I think they abandoned the manual method, and we might see something dramatic happen soon. See my GMG post of July 25th, 2013: https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/the-demolition-of-a-rockport-landmark/ Not much has changed since then.

There might have been more rebar in that stack than they thought. They did nibble a chunk and there is an orange mark about halfway down. I figured that mark was there to tell them how far they had to go before they could then whack it a couple of good ones and drop it.
They haven’t been nibbling for two weeks now. You may be right.

As recently as 30 years ago you could see NH and the Isles of Shoals from the water tower. The fields to the north were burned in the spring and the blueberries were plentiful.

Is that a 60’s picture of piegon hill?

I haven’t received the postcard yet but details were that it was published by the Albertype Company and it is “linen era”. It also is not colorized so it was probably published 1930 to 1945.

I remember being able to see up the coast from the Top of Pigeon Hill when I was young, 45 years ago. It would be nice if the Town did some clearing up there. Rockport has a very good DPW.

I agree that it would be very cool if the small area around Profile Rock down to the field was added to the land that the DPW keeps clear. I also agree that the Rockport DPW is awesome from top to bottom. When they came down the street last spring doing tree work around the wires I had to jump on my bike and chase them down to thank them for the amazing job they did. And by amazing I mean taking out limbs that they didn’t have to but stuff was pruned the way a professional arborist would have done (while also pruning my wallet.)

That’s cool! How did you ever find it?

Not an easy question to answer and I also want to keep the location hidden since the hunt is the most fun. To answer without giving too many hints. I tried to match up the view in google maps 3D. Easy, that gets me near the top of Pigeon Hill. Went up there and meandered around for an hour, the brush is pretty thick. Then I practically tripped over it 30 feet from my car.
I did that more than a year ago. Right after that I ran into a Cover who could have told me exactly where it was since he played capture the flag on it as a kid.
