ESSEX ANTIQUES APPRAISAL NIGHT

Did you ever wonder what that old clock of yours was worth? Or that bunch of coins in your dresser drawer?

The Essex Merchants Group and the Essex Elementary School PTO are combining forces for the fourth annual Antique Appraisal Night to be held at the Periwinkles Restaurant 74 Main Street in Essex on Tuesday, October 23rd from 5:30 to 9:30 PM. A donation of $15.00 per person or $25.00 per couple  will go to benefit both organizations and includes hors d’oeuvres, participation in wine tasting, and verbal valuations from some of the most experienced local experts in the antique trade.

Diane Corrao, head of the local PTO remarked, "The PTO is very excited to be collaborating with the Essex Merchants Group once again to bring the Antique Appraisal Night to the community. We are happy for the chance to assist a group that is always so generous with their donations to the PTO. This should be a fun and entertaining evening for all who attend."

“In the past,” said Merchants Group chairman, Bob Coviello, “many special items have arrived including a Civil War diary and a wonderful set of art deco gold and gem stone jewelry.

Our appraisers will be happy to look at whatever you can bring. If it’s too big to carry, bring a photo and we’ll work from that.”

Hosting the wine tasting will be Sara Maziarz of Commonwealth Wines and on hand to do the appraising will be members from the Essex antique community: Michael March of Blackwood March Auctioneers,

David Neligan of Neligan Antiques, Ed Howard of the Flying Dragon, Michael Bider of Bider’s Antiques Auctions & Appraisers, Robert Coviello of Main Street Antiques, Vincent Caravella of All Prints and Maps and Rick Grobe of the White Elephant Shop.

Mr. Coviello went on to say, , “This will be a rare opportunity to have questions answered about your antiques and a chance to meet your friends & neighbors for an evening of camaraderie, to sample a fine selection of food & wine, and to support two great local organizations."

Christine Leveille submits-

On October 3rd and 5th the sixth graders from O’Maley Innovation School explored the Gloucester Harbor Walk.  Using our essential question  "HOW IS CHANGE OVER TIME OBSERVED AND MEASURED’ to guide our discussion and exploration,  students completed a scavenger hunt at each of 36 posts found throughout Harbor walk.  We documented our exploration through writing, video and photos.  Students will use the knowledge gained through this experience throughout the year in our project based learning curriculum.

Happy No Bra Day!

from 94.3 MAX-FM:

“Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month people are coming up with unique ways to celebrate and support the cause, or in this case support the cause without support. today is being deemed by many, “No Bra Day.”

After doing a little research into what could have become my favorite day of the year after my birthday, I found that there is an actual National No Bra Day in on July 9th. That means that this is just some made up day, most likely by a guy who is in need of seeing some breasts covered only by shirts rather than bras and shirts.

People all over social media are buying into it, and it is fine by me… Raise awareness for a good cause, and have a little fun doing it!”

Boardgame Sunday at G33K

The G33K store on Main Street is starting a new activity: Boardgame Sundays!  The first one was held last Sunday, and the next is October 21st, 2PM – 6PM.  (They are still working out the details of how often it will be held and what days work best.) It’s a free activity, and the organizer (Greg) brings a large selection of games.  Just show up and go in towards the back of the store! I didn’t have time to stay and play this Sunday, but I hope to at a later date. A good number of players came last Sunday; there were about ten people when I left.

They are also planning to organize a regular meeting to play Pathfinder or D&D style table top.   If you are interested, you can inquire at the store.

Chickity Check It! Boston Harbor Beacon Does Thacher Island

A Tour of the North Shore: Day trip to Gloucester Harbor, Thacher Island, Rockport and the Annisquam River

Posted on October 11, 2012 by admin

This past Sunday’s conditions were ideal, so I made a trip up to Cape Ann. After navigating past the beautiful and secluded twin lighthouses of Thacher Island off Rockport’s coast, I decided to take advantage of the conditions and head further North. This took me around the top of the Cape Ann and back through the Annisquam River. This is a perfect day trip for a boater coming out of Boston Harbor or the South Shore: far enough to be an adventure, but close enough so that you never have to go too far from shore or worry about the weather taking a turn for the worse.

Gloucester is a destination that I have visited by boat several times, and found it to be fun and relatively easy in a 28ft boat. One can get from the start of the North Channel off Deer Island to Gloucester Harbor in about an hour with decent speed. The distance from the mouth of the Boston Harbor at Deer Island to the end of the Dogbar breakwater outside Gloucester Harbor is exactly twenty-two miles. In past trips, I have found that the seas get rougher as you head North and out of the protection of Cape Cod, but Sunday was a truly gorgeous day for boating: despite overcast skies and chilly temperatures, there was no wind, and the 44013 buoy was reading wave heights of only 1.3 feet.

Hi Joey! The Gloucester Gig Rowers went out for a Photo Row this morning.

Look who we caught hard at work!

Part Puff Pastry. Part Muffin.  All Incredibly Delicious.

On the weekends Heidi at Fort Square Café makes Muffins, Puffins and Smuffins.

Just like Alicia Cox’ world’s greatest coffee rolls, you need to just up and drop whatever it is you are doing Saturday morning, go to Fort Square CafĂ© and get one of these puffins.  The one I got had cranberries and apple pie stuffing and it was so decadent, so delicious and rich and warm and feel good, I’ll tell you for certain I’ll be back next Saturday to get me one fer shizzy.
