Allen Estes will open for Orleans at North Shore Music Theatre on August 31

You know that being an FOB means you’re the very first to get the scoop on what’s up in Gloucester.  Well, Allen Estes just agreed to open for Orleans and we’re telling you BEFORE we even update the website.  We’ll do that later tonight.  In the meantime, you can get tickets here.

Here’s a video of Allen singing one of his new songs The Trouble with Me — destined to be a hit.  If you like the song, you can catch Allen with his son Dylan at the Block Party on Saturday and ask him to include it in his set at North Shore Music Theatre.

Blackburn Challenge Wrap-Up

Couldn’t ask for better weather. Cloudy and not too hot, wind really of no consequence. I’ll cover the race from most crazy to least crazy, just the highlights. The full spreadsheet of race results go to Cape Ann Rowing Club Web site here.

First up, the Stand Up Paddle. Local Bay Viewer, Gloucester Will Rich put down a time of 3 hours 57 minutes last year. Less than 4 hours all the way around Cape Ann. Standing up. That is crushing it. So this year he cut that down to 3:37:45 on a SUP. That is officially the most crazy.

Next up, the boats that should not be on an ocean with waves. Sliding seat racers, single and doubles as well as some of the high performance kayaks (HPK) look like they would be insane to paddle with any chop. Place rubber duck in any of them and they would flip in 10 seconds. But Daniel Gorriaran and Scott Whitney posted the best time in a sliding seat racing double at 2:19:54. Are you serious? (But not a Blackburn record. 2009 a sliding seat racing double did it in 2:15. Not sure if that is the overall record. A BC historian could comment and I will correct.)

And last but not least, Rubber Duck. Well, totally improving each year. Here are her times the past four years: 2009 DNS “did not start”, she had bronchitis. Quack. 2010; 5:30 there was beer left in the keg, that was fun. 2011; 5:22 Ed, the duck, and I stop at Andrews Point for a beer and also finished before the keg is done. Cool. 2012; 4:49 OK, cutting off enough time to get under 5 hours and I didn’t fall in the water getting out. The best part is Rubber Duck paddled past Jimmy T before the DogBar Breakwater. I am sure it wasn’t because he saw the rubber one pass him but he definitely picked it up in the last two miles in the harbor but the rubbery one held him off finishing just 25 seconds ahead of him. Mister Tarantino was in a Banks Dory that was more than a few hundred pounds heavier than Rubber Duck’s kayak but pwnd is pwned.

Next year Rubber Duck goes under 4:30 heading for under four hours by 2015. Gotta set goals.

As always the Cape Ann Rowing Club did a superb job officiating and taking care of every racer’s needs, even a slow whiny duck. Best pulled pork ever.  See you next year on the Essex River. Time for a nap.

ps. Only 362 days (unconfirmed July 13, 2013) until the 27th Blackburn Challenge. Start your training now!

Decompression Unplugged ~ hot sound, tight harmony

A good way to judge the quality of an electric band is to hear them unplugged.  This video proves that The Bandit Kings are one of Gloucester’s best.  Here they are unplugged on a tiny TV set delivering all the power and energy of their fully electric shows.  Plus Renee and Ann Marie’s harmonies are perfect!

The video above features one of three of their songs from their excellent show (Decompression off their excellent Precious Stones CD — get it here).

You can see the entire show this week on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 beginning Wednesday at 6:3opm.  It also features one of Allen Estes‘ very popular (relatively new) songs, Peace and Harmony, which is not available anywhere for download or on CD.  This is part of our summer reprise of the most requested shows from Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.

If you don’t have cable or you don’t live in Gloucester you can watch the entire show on-line here.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait until Wednesday to see the Bandit Kings.  Go to the Rhumb Line tonight where they host the open jam to get your fix of one of Gloucester’s most distinctive sounds.  And check out the enterprising way they are raising money to make a new record — a very good cause, indeed.  I just donated and can’t wait to hear the new album.

Two Franks

The guys are always working super hard down at Captain Joe and Sons so its’ great to see a lighthearted moment.

Frankie Ciaramitaro and Frank Ciolino share a laugh.

Have you treated yourself and your family to a lobster feast recently? Why not–it’s so inexpensive? The price and quality of lobsters from Captian Joe’s is UNBEATABLE–only $5. per pound!!! My daughter Liv and I were eating them “by the twos” when she visited recently!

What are you waiting for-the price to return to normal?

Another great resource

One of the most viewed photos of the horribles parade on my photostream was this one:

These fellows are on the float for a new website, The Bridge.  They host videos, a short-format news feed, a blog, and more, from/about local Cape Ann businesses and organizations.  It’s a helpful and well-presented resource that complements GoodMorningGloucester and helps spread the news about all the great things going on here on Cape Ann!

Hey Joey-

Gloucester’s ‘sister city’ is Tamano, Japan. July 16 is a Holiday in Japan- Marine Day (Umi no hi) Japan’s newest holiday; only became a nationally recognized holiday in Japan in 1996. Marine Memorial Day was established in 1941 to mark the anniversary of the 1876 return of the Meiji Emperor to the Port of Yokohama, on the two-masted topsail schooner Meiji-Maru, from a tour of the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions This holiday was established to express gratitude for the gifts of the sea, honor its importance, and pray for the prosperity of Japan as a maritime nation.

In celebration of Marine Day, in Japan all the national aquariums organize special events, water sports competitions, water shows, and cultural activities relating to the sea take place. Many people celebrate with a day at the beach.

Gloucester is a Maritime City- with its fishing industry, the Maritime Museum and Dory Shop, elegant double-masted schooners (the Adventure, Ardele, and Lannon,) rowing competitions (Blackburn Challenge, dory and seine boat races.) festivals (St. Peter’s, Waterfront, Schooner) delicious fresh seafood served at Gloucester’s many fine restaurants, beautiful beaches and much, much more, we are truly blessed! Here we have many ways to enjoy our ‘Gifts from the Sea.’ Think Globally, Act Locally- Today may we express gratitude for these gifts, honor their importance, and pray for the prosperity of all! Take Time Today to Reflect Upon and Enjoy All the Wonders of Gloucester and the Sea! Viva Glosta!

Thank you Joey! Congrats on Chronicle! Thank you for all you do for Gloucester!   Karen

Mary Bowles Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,

My husband and I have been Gloucester residents now for almost 2.5 years and I can’t say enough not only how much we love it here for all the obvious reasons but also how thoughtful, unselfish and helpful people are.  Just this past Tuesday I had yet another great experience of generosity.  I’m a mosaic artist and I realized the mirror part of a mosaic mirror I needed to bring to the cape that very night for a customer was scratched.  So I ran up to Banner Glass on Pond Road and the woman there said unfortunately there was no one there to cut a piece of mirror for me.  But she’s thoughtful enough to recommended another glass merchant in town, Al’s Glass on Main Street.   I run down there and meet Al who couldn’t have been nicer.  So I got to meet someone who’s had a Gloucester business for 47 years and chat with him which was the best thing.  Then he takes time to find just the right mirror which he cuts and in the end won’t take any money for it!

And I had a similar experience at The Building Center a couple of months ago when I needed a piece of plywood and they cut it right away and said "no charge".    And of course many many other wonderful people like EJ for example who has taken the time to give me much encouragement and guidance as a new artist in town.

All these people are role models and I will do my best to "pay it forward".

Wood Meets Waves Course at Maritime Gloucester

Tom Balf writes-

Sign up now for Maritime Gloucester’s July 26th one-day "hand plane" workshop. Designed for woodworkers and active bodysurfers ages 12 and up, participants in the "hand plane" workshop will cut and shape their own handplane with traditional wordworking tools and techniques. Registration closes July 19th.
Here’s what the locals are saying. Award winning boat builder Harold Burnham says "If I was 18 and somebody dropped a tree off at my yard, I’d hold off on building a schooner. I’d make a hand plane first. I love body surfing." And famed Gloucester dorymaker Geno Mondello says: "I love the way GrainSurfboard combines traditional wood working tools and techniques with the sports of today. If my back could stand it, I’d be body surfing at Good Harbor after making my own hand plane!"
The attached poster includes a picture of a handplane in action. For more information go to www.grainsurfboards.com/classes
