A flock of my favorite early spring arrivals descended on Annisquam today with their wonderful call. I didn’t see them, hence no photo, but the call they make is distinctly them and goes: conk-a-reeee, conk-a-reeee! Who can identify these birds? You see them along marshes, clinging to cattails and reeds.

You got it Cliff, you get the Birder of the Day Award. Don’t you just love to hear them! They are more a sign of spring to me than Robins.

Is it this bird? First one that came to mind.

Thanks Joanne, that’s great, now others can hear what I was hearing, in case they didn’t know what I was talking about, and see and learn about the red winged blackbird.

I was walking around Bay View in Laneville/Annisquam this week, and there was a flock of tired red winged blackbirds in a small bog. They were chattering and squawking. I was able not only to hear them, but see them; and the red wing, even, on a couple. This is the sign for me that Spring is really on the way!
