P.S. to the blog or “Part 2” of Meg Lee Pimps G-Town

Read Part I Here

Hi Joey,

My co-worker from China, Amphy, sent me the photo we took at Man at the Wheel. Though she didn’t have the GMG sticker to represent, I can vouch that she did indeed come to visit from China, based on the post from November, "Margaret Lee Representing! from Shenzhen, Guangdong, China." I’ve attached our co-workers group photo, and Amphy Chen is second from right.

So, you’ve got "there and back again" a full 360 degrees from 2 co-workers — or would it be 720 degrees??

Gloucester Seal

Hey Joe,

Every year in late December/Early January, we have a seal show up in the cove that loves to hang out on top of the moraine boulder that is visible in Wonson Cove at low tide, but covered by water a high tide.  I’m can’t be sure if it’s always the same seal, but the behavior is always the same.  He will hang around on top of the boulder for hours and leave when the rock is half exposed by the tide.  He’ll stick around for a couple of weeks and then he’ll disappear. I’m thinking he’s gorging on urchins, then moving on.  When he comes back the following year, the urchins have rebounded.  Hopefully I’ll be able to get some photos in the future to use as comparison from year to year.

Anyhow, whether the seals are the same one or not from year to year, we’re calling him Rocky.

Enjoy ~Bill O’Connor

Bill I’m not sure if this is the same seal I took pictures of back in late September-

Here are my photos-

and video-

Damon Cummings speaks of a certain seal that follows him down the harbor each day he rows in the dory.  Could possibly be the same one.

Attention All Local Bars- Send Me Your Info

I’ve been in contact with the developer of BarBird– an iPhone twitter and desktop app which will stream all tweets from you or about you into one iPhone app.  free publicity to get you the much deserved attention you deserve.

if you don’t have a twitter account, firstly, shame on you and secondly get a free twitter account in your bar’s name even if you only link your Bar’s Facebook stream to it you will be listed.  I’ve been assured by the developer.

I already have @minglewoodtav , @alchemybistro and @farmbargrille listed on their site, the more local joints we get listed the more our area will gain exposure.

You don’t need to have an iPhone to use this, check out the site on your desktop or laptop computer here- http://bos.barbird.com/map_view

Poll- How Much Does The Patriots Loss Bother You?

In an effort to get an idea of how important professional sports are to our readership I offer this poll-

On a scale from 1-10  10 meaning that the Patriots loss is personally devastating and 1 meaning that the Patriots loss means nothing to you.

if it doesn’t bother you, feel free to explain whether it is because you don’t care for professional sports, football in general or root for another team all together.

More From This Weekend’s Sled Dog Races

Three cheers for the Myopia Sled Dog Races – Yet another great annual event hosted on the North Shore! Think of the first time someone raised this idea to a large group of people to host a dog sled race here – SAY WHAT?  Think of the risk and coordination needed to pull off such and event. This weekend the stars aligned and everyone I saw had a smile on their face. Below are some pics that I got and more coverage at the Patch

Ellis Island Passenger Search

The Ellis Island Foundation now offers free online searches of passengers that have immigrated to America through Ellis Island. It’s free, you just have to sign up!  www.ellisisland.org

I was able to find my Grandfather, Great Aunt and Great Grandparents. The site gives you a passenger record, passenger manifests and even images and information about the ship. You can purchase copies of the documentations through the Ellis Island Foundation. Tip: when searching you may want to try different name spellings in order to find your family.

My Grandfather was born in the US, but as a child went back with his mother and sister to Italy for medical care and ended up staying until WWI ended. This documents their return trip. Such a fun way to discover your family’s history!

Gino Cavalieri Photo

Yesterday Morning When going for coffee I ran into Paulie Walnuts just as the sun was getting to rise at Good Harbor.

I was setting up my tripod to take a pic or ten and Gino Cavelieri introduced himself to Paulie and I and asked for a few pointers on how to capture the sunrise.  I gave him the pointers that I knew and took him through some of his camera settings while Paulie gave him a GMG sticka.

Did You Know (Babson Farm)

That on the 28th of December 1658 James was granted “twelve acres of fresh meadow [at Beaver Dam] lying above the Mill, also twenty acres of upland lying by the side of it”? (Gloucester Town Records 1: 71) This was where he and his wife settled and was known as the James Babson farm. It was here that he built the little stone cooperage shop, still standing today and open to visitors every summer. The barrels he made here were taken to Good Harbor Beach, filled with fish and shipped to England, the West Indies, etc. Roger W. Babson’s research indicated that James Babson’s stone shop was the first factory on Cape Ann.
