Rocky Neck Plunge Info from Brenda Malloy-

Thought it may be a good idea to give people some directions on exactly where the beach is that The Rocky Neck Plunge takes place. It is called Oak Cove Beach at the end of Stevens Way, neither of which names are commonly known to most, even on Rocky Neck!
When one is driving down Rocky Neck and bears right at Sailor Stan’s restaurant, you take the first street on the  left ‘Stevens Way’. This is a short street, 2 houses long, then you must go either right or left on Wonson St.  If you were to continue straight you go down the gravel path ahead of you, this leads to Oak Cove Beach where the plunge takes place.
Hope to see a big crowd, one and all are welcome!
PEACE!

2010 leftovers

For a neat and tidy start to the New Year I’ll just post a few leftovers for my last 2010 post. So it’s seems my deal with Santa is paying off in spades and the temp at noon tomorrow will break 50 and no wind. I needed to warm up for the plunge so today I went out and chainsawed up some trees that came down in the Blizzard of 2010.

I am ready for a balmy dip in the harbor. Last night checking out the new Cape Ann Brew space:

I did a, “I’ll have two of those” pointing to those bright beers and although I don’t know what I was drinking they were very tasty. Having a fish and chips with my beer on that deck in the spring will be something to look forward to. Meanwhile, backing up a day we did a hike up from the Keystone bridge to Steel Derrick. I must be blind or it was always leafy but I never noticed the ROUS on the top of this house right before you go under the bridge:

For non-Princess Bride speakers that is a Rodent of Unusual Size. Fred Boden who I ran into at the bar said this thing is made of steel. Homie can’t believe it. The hiking was easy as X-country skiers had packed the path up the big siphon tube to Steel Derrick and we made it around to see the dude in the rock:

Just a touch of open water next to him otherwise a sheen of ice. A camera malfunction will not allow the posting of me doing laps here in my birthday suit. Too much pink broke the sensor. That ends my year. Now to get ready for swimming lessons at noon tomorrow.

This is an artistic portrayal of our fearless top dog GMG leader of the pack emerging victorious from his frigid Rocky Neck plunge into the icy water – smiling with head and tail held high.
I do plan to be there without my bathing suit and with my camera to catch some shots of how he and everyone really looks during and after their New Year’s Day plunge.  It looks like Paul’s deal with the kidnapped Santa might actually pay off – the forecast is for sunny,  almost balmy weather.  Unfortunately, that won’t make the water any warmer.

Millard Fuller Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

"It is easier to act your way to right thinking than it is to think your way to right action."

Millard Fuller (1935-2009)
Fuller founded Habitat for Humanity, which has built more than 150,000 homes for those in need in more than 90 countries. Volunteers build houses with the recipients, who then repay the cost of materials at no interest, revolutionizing the way in which philanthropy works. The holder of 50 honorary degrees, Bill Clinton awarded him the Medal of Freedom in 1996.

Julie Geary Does Two New Years’ Appetizer Videos At The Taste of The Times

Pesto Terrine served with Semolina Bread

According to Julie, people get tired of seeing slices of cheddar and other cheeses laid out on a platter. This is a perfect cheese alternative for your party or entertaining to start out the New Year and you can combine all of the ingredients in several minutes. You can also make this a day or two ahead and keep in your refrigerator.

This Mediterranean style dish is also a little healthier than many other appetizers. Goat cheese, cream cheese, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes are layered into a bowl. Julie shows you a simple technique for getting it onto a plate for a perfect presentation. Perfect for 20 to 25 people if it is one of several appetizers.

Another five-minute appetizer recipe from Julie Geary of Classic Caterers. Small Phyllo tarts, roasted red peppers, small mozzarella balls (called pearls), and some pesto. All of the ingredients can be obtained in the supermarket.

Cape Ann Brewing Kills It On Opening Night!

The Boys Knocked it out of the park with rave reviews, huge smiles and killer food all the way around on opening night at Cape Ann Brewing’s new location on Rogers Street directly across from the Saint Peter’s Club.

This was the place to be tonight without question as an excitement and electricity filled the year in what is destined to be yet another top destination for craft beer lovers WORLD WIDE.  Yeah I said it- WORLD FUCKING WIDE!  The place is unlike anything around and expense was not spared in bringing the masses a dining and drinking establishment that is uniquely Gloucester.

Here are a few pictures- more to come tomorrow along with video.
