Chickity Check It! Kim Smith Updates With The Great Spangled Fritillary

Dear Gardening Friends,

Events and projects have kept me from writing these past few weeks. Design work and the start of the new school year have played a part, however, what has really kept me away is that I am working like mad to complete the Monarch book illustrations. The glorious weather and warmth, light and air have exhilarated and inspired (along with the caterpillars and butterflies that have taken over our kitchen!). With writing and photographing, I can work around design projects and my family’s schedule, but with painting I need long stretches of time. As soon as the illustrations are completed i will turn my full attention to the tv show. I take breaks from painting at around the peak time of day when the pollinators are on the wing and have been gathering tons and tons of footage.

Renovating our little apartment has kept me away as well. Our wonderful tenant of ten years purchased her own home and moved out this past month. Ten years is a long time and we miss her terribly. My husband and i have been scouring and scrubbing and painting, and with several fresh coats, the place is sparkling. The apartment is charming and sunny, with hardwood floors, private entrance through the garden, and would make a great artist’s or writer’s studio, office space, pied-Ă -terre, or modest home. It is within walking distance of Good Harbor Beach, Niles Beach, Rocky Neck, Gloucester Stage Company, and several fabulous restaurants (Duckworth’s Bistro!). Please pass along this information if you know of an interested person.

Great Spangleds are on the wing at this time of year. They adore fresh blossoms of butterfly bushes. With this year’s drought I realize it has been particularly difficult, but try to keep your butterfly bushes well-hydrated so that they will continue to produce new blossoms during the remaining weeks of late summer, while there are still myriad species of pollinators needing fortification. Additional photos of Great Spangled Fritillaries and Monarchs are on the blog at www.kimsmithdesigns.wordpress.com.

Warmest wishes,

Kim

Welcome Oh Great Spangled Fritillary!

image

Singularly beautiful—large and rounded with tawny orange wings checkered with black dots and dashes—when observed from above. When wings are folded, this fritillary shows a striking underwing pattern of spangled spots, bordered by a wide yellow band and outlined in iridescent crescents. Perhaps the Great Spangled Fritillary has graced your garden. I had never encountered this creature of extraordinary beauty until the summer after we planted violets dug from a wildly unkempt cemetery. They were common violets (Viola sororia). I don’t recommend the common violet for a small garden, unless you desire a garden composed entirely of common violets. Please don’t misunderstand; I do not regret planting V. sororia because otherwise I may never have encountered the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele). No, I am glad to have welcomed this beauty to our garden. There are, however, far better behaved violets that are of equal importance to the fritillary caterpillars and they would be a far better choice for the garden. Both native wildflowers Labrador violet (Viola labradorica) and Canada violet (Viola canadensis) naturalize readily, making rulier groundcovers than common violets, and are lovely when in bloom and when not in flower.

The truth about iPad: It’s only good for two things

I’m by no means inferring that these guys plagiarized me but it seems they think about the device similarly in the way I do.

Thoughts On The iPad

A couple of upgrades to the storage and ability to edit video would make me a buyer.

It was interesting that they found that watching video not ideal on the iPad.  In my admittedly short experience handling one I found watching video t be one of it’s strengths.

Playground Twin Lights Restored

Kudos to Bruce Dexter the visitor center volunteer who called in repairs, the public works folks for fixing, Rotary Club people, and whoever else made and helps to upkeep these awesome old wooden play structures! Vandals took them down a few weeks ago and busted them up (for shame!), but they are restored and ready to rumble! They are so much fun and incredibly well loved by tones of happy kids everyday at Stage Fort Park. Just another unique and awesome tidbit in Gloucester!

International Dory Race Report From Celia Robertson

Good morning!

I am the mother of L.J. Robertson and we recently returned from a wonderful trip in Lunenburg for the International Dory Races between USA vs Canada.  Four teams from Gloucester made the trip there, along with some family and friends, including my son and his rowing partner, Randy Parisi.  I have attached some pictures from the event.  The first one is L.J. (left) and Randy (right) crossing the finish line and taking first place in the Junior Men’s Division race.  The other is a picture of competing rowers that were in attendance at the award ceremony from both countries.

I hope to see these rowers recognized for their wonderful job representing the US!

Cruiseships Arriving in Gloucester Harbor Dates From Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce

Cruiseships Arriving in Gloucester Harbor
(confirmed with Cruiseport 9/22/2010)

Eurodam September 24, 7am arrival
Eurodam September 28, 9am arrival
Eurodam October 13, 7am arrival
Clelia II October 14, early am

Here is what I would do if I owned a shop on Main Street-

I’d put a sign out welcoming the Cruisers and saying that they get some type of discount if they show their ID from the ship or whatever it is they use to board/de-board the cruise ship OR I’d put out a sign saying free candy or token gift for all cruise people for coming in the shop.

I’d make sure to engage each customer and tell all of them “Welcome to Gloucester” and “Hope To See You Again”, that sort of stuff.  If the cruisers walk down Main street and get barraged with “Welcome to Gloucester” over and over and over it starts to sink in and what they take away is how friendly of a place this is.

If I was a restaurant I’d put little folded placards that said “Welcome Cruisers To Beautiful Downtown Gloucester” as well and offer cruiser specials.

Is it possible to have the City Paint a Line on the pavement for the Cruisers to follow that would lead them from Cruiseport on the sidewalk over Union Hill and up Main street then down to Saint Peter’s Square and back up Rogers Street back to Cruiseport?  This way the Cruisers can find Main Street and not assume that Rogers Street is our Main Street and turn around and walk back to the ship at Cruiseport?

GMG Tech Talk- Flip Video Cameras

Much like yesterday’s tech talk post about the iPad I’m going to share my opinions on some of the popular new technology that has been gaining the hearts of consumers and what I like and think is downright stupid about them.

Today I would like to explain my feelings about pocked HD video cameras that have been become relatively popular in the past two or three years.  There are brands like the Flip,Kodak Zi, and Sony Bloggie. You may have heard about them or seen someone use them.  They are small, pocketable and pretty convenient for capturing video on the go.

If anyone remembers my adventure into buying a DSLR for use taking pictures for GMG, here is a post from July 2009 when I had decided to sell the original camera used for taking pictures and video for the blog to upgrade to a DSLR.  I sold my original Sony DSC H3 and bought a Nikon D40 and within a day of making the purchase I regretted it terribly.  The reason I regretted it terribly was because when capturing the amount of content for the blog that I do I found that I absolutely needed to have the camera on my person.  A big bulky DSLR that was up in the office when a rare lobster came in or in the truck when I wanted to capture something in a shop downtown was absolutely useless to me.  The adage I heard (and unfortunately don’t remember who to attribute it to) of “The best camera is the one you have with you” is without question the principal which dictates my camera buying ever since my foray into the realm of the chunky DSLR.

The Nikon D40 DSLR which I owned for two days before returning-

I realized that the smaller pocketable Sony was doing a great job for the blog and immediately missed it.  It took video but not HD video which was something that was becoming more and more popular at the time.  After researching a bit more I found just the camera- it was the camera I use currently- a Sony DSC H20. The H20 was simply the next generation of the original camera I owned, the Sony DSC H3.  It had a nice zoom for capturing stuff that was happening across the harbor like the H3 had but it added HD video recording which is my passion.  The interviews for me are the most fun so being able to capture interviews in HD in a pocketable camera in HD and also take great pictures in that same camera is the perfect combination. No extra video camera, all in one solution, on my person, all the time.

The Sony DSC H20 (the current GMG Camera for your boy Joey)-

So this is where I get to the part where I explain why I think the small Flip cameras are a stupid idea.

Much like the iPad gives you way less functionality than a small laptop computer for a whole lot more money, the pocket video cameras give you way less functionality than a small form camera that also takes great photos.  The small flip cameras have smaller lenses and thereby take much less quality video and video than a camera with image stabilization and a larger lens not to mention the fact that the pocket camera like the Sony DSC H20 take great pictures IN ADDITION TO video for a tiny fraction more money.  so people don’t be fooled by gimmicks.  if you want a small video camera look no further than the current point and shoots that incorporate HD video along with decent photo taking.
