Romancing myself

On occasion, one needs to recharge, fall back in love with oneself in order to love others. So when my husband stopped speaking with me and exited on a night of romance in Gloucester, I decided to embrace the opportunity to romance myself.

Before I checked in to Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, I headed to Main Street for lunch at a hotspot called Passports. With a name that no doubt would attract a travel writer such as myself, the name is actually a reflection of the menu, which lists worldwide offerings from local fish to Mediterranean dishes to Thai dishes. But what Passports is really known for is their complimentary popovers served at lunch and dinner. This place is packed with customers before 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. And everyone is enjoying their popovers. I drove by later and noticed that the place was once again full with dinner patrons. Perhaps it’s the hefty serving sizes that draws the crowd.

Smudging

At last weekend’s Inter-tribal Pow Wow, we were asked to not photograph certain aspects of the ceremonies taking place, but we were given permission for these dancers.

Photographing the smudging ritual was a no-no. So I asked one of the elders about smudging. Here is a good explanation:

From Virginia Graverette Pigeon, Tribal Elder of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, member of the Cedar Women’s Society, Elder of the Mide Lodge

“In the first place, tobacco (a-say-ma) was a gift of the Four Manido (Spirits of the Four Directions).  It was the father of Nanabush who gave the tobacco (ah-say-ma) and shared the custom of smoking with his son after their epic battle in war, as a symbol of peace.  Nanabush in turn passed on the custom to the Anishnabe as a ceremony.  Thereafter, the Anishnabe smoked the Pipe of Peace before great councils, after war, and before other ceremonies.  The Anishnabe adopted the custom and made it part of their daily lives to compose their minds and spirits.  It is said that it will chase away feelings that are bad or negative and bring on thoughts that are good or positivie.

In the second place, tobacco (ah-say-ma) was in the nature of an incense, sweet to the taste and fragrant to smell.  No other plant is endowed with such qualities.  Cedar was offered to the fire to smudge the lodge and people.  It is also used to waft the smoke to ward away sickness.

There are no absolutes with sage and sweetgrass.

In the above medicine wheel which we convey as the wheel of life, there are Four Directions.  When we are born, life begins in the East.  The teenage years are in the South.  Then mid-life is in the West.  When we reach the North, we are grandmas and grandpas and nearly ready to go to the Spirit World as we have done our many deeds on Mother Earth.  The journey does not end in the North because we go to the Spirit World and then the cycle continues.

We gain knowledge with our tobacco (ah-say-ma) and we grow spiritually.  Our hearts feel and our spiritual eyes have to see what our Creator wants us to learn.  We feel the knowledge in our soul, and we know it comes from our Creator.  When we pray, we get answers, then we are nurtured and we grow spiritually.

Smudging helps us center ourselves with the four sacred herbs mentioned: tobacco (ah-say-ma), sweetgrass, sage, and cedar.  We begin by using a shell or bowl with a fan or feather.  We then smudge the room, slowly walking clockwise around the perimeter of the room, fanning the smudge pot, keeping it lit and wafting the smoke about.  Smudge any medicine tool you will be using such as pipe, jewelry, outfit, etc.

It is a good practice to smudge each person in a group, circle, ceremony, and lodge.  Starting from the East and holding the smudge pot lit, each person can bathe themselves in the smoke.  Many people smudge the heart area first, next the head area, and then the arms, then downward toward the legs.  This isn’t the only way you can smudge.  It isn’t wrong to smudge another way.  We can purify and cleanse fairly regularly in this day and age with so much sickness and bad feelings around.”

Spirit of Massachusetts was launched on April 28, 1984 at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts. She is modeled after the 1889 fishing schooner Fredonia, designed by Edward Burgess. The Gloucester fishing schooners were widely known as "fast and able" vessels, and Fredonia was widely known for her speed. Spirit of Massachusetts proudly upholds that tradition to this day.

Spirit of Massachusetts was built by her original owners for service as a sail training vessel for young people. She also served as a good-will ambassador for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1984 until 1987. Ocean Classroom Foundation began chartering Spirit for our own educational programs in 1997, and subsequently purchased her in 2000.

Amateur Weather Fanatics- Most Amusing

There is this one guy on twitter who tweets about North Shore Weather.  The excitement in his postings about extreme weather and potential disaster are wild. Since the first rumblings of Earl he’s been tweeting and retweeting just about every local TV weatherman update and I swear this guy would have an orgasm if the eye of the hurricane went straight through his house.

I would simply unfollow him in my twitter stream if it weren’t so amusing so watch him kvetch around with every new report.

Insane weather guy- Don’t be that guy.

Block Party is canceled

Joey,

With 90% chance of rain (and it sounds like 100% chance of wind), we are canceling the Friday, Sept. 3rd Block Party.

We are particularly disappointed because the Docksiders were scheduled to play, but we felt this was the responsible thing to do in order to give restaurants a chance to cancel food orders, change staffing patterns, etc.

Thanks for being a perennial cheerleader for the block parties, and here’s hoping Gloucester still has a terrific weekend, Earl notwithstanding,

Thursday Night Blues Jam @ The Rhumb Line to feature Bad Moon Rising

From Mr. Dave Sags,

I’m shuffling off to Baltimore this week to see the Redsox, so i’m turning it over to Greg, who’s bringing in his awesome band, BAD MOON RISING.  sort of a Credence cover band with a fruity taste and a slight oak finish. All your faves will be there: Dave brown on gootar, Dave Synchromattacks, on skins, and Johnny P. on bass and vocals. Have fun! See you next week with LISA MARIE!

Myspace page ~ About Bad Moon Rising
Bad Moon Rising is New England’s premier Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute act, honoring one of the greatest American Rock bands in history.

This band is comprised of all veteran musicians with the collective experience of tens of thousands of live performances spanning over three decades, locally, nationally and internationally.

This is not just another sound alike act. The original recordings are not just copied here. The Swamp rock sound is emulated with great respect to historical mood and feel. CCR reached their pinnacle of success during the Vietnam era. This was a tumultuous time in American history and CCR’s raw, soulful power contributed prominently to the soundtrack in American life.

These well loved classics are performed with stellar execution. The recordings on this site were made without any of the high-tech digital editing we’ve all become accustom to; no pitch correction, nudging of tracks or machines were used, just live musicians playing live music. The same way the original recordings were made.

Close your eyes and be transcended to an age when America was in flux, Rock ‘N’ Roll was young and all the world was rocking out to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

CHELSEA BERRY
Walk With Me

10-song CD

Ms. Berry’s voice is heard to evincing effect on numbers such as the lovely “Walk With Me” and the mesmeric “The One I’ve Waited For,” and fans of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks will find a great deal to like in these particular compositions. Otherwise, overall this seems a largely anodyne collection of sometimes overly solipsistic confessional songs and character pieces, though never less than competently executed. Her compositions are often jazzy and melodic in a restrained fashion, which is seldom the cause of any undue offense, yet also all too seldom evocative of any particular sense of wonder. (Francis DiMenno)

From the very first time I heard Chelsea Berry’s song  ” The One I’ve Waited For”  I said this should be number one on the charts. It is number one in my mind along with ” Walk With Me”.  Being a romantic I can easily get caught up in her music. Chelsea’s songs hit home in many ways and I am sure once you have listened to them you  will certainly agree. Check out the links to get a taste of Chelsea’s music.

Rip Currents: What to Know

We have had some very sad tragedies lately and I thought it would be good for everyone to have a little knowledge on rip currents.  As we all already know the ocean is an unpredictable and incredible force.  I hope everyone has a happy and safe Labor Day weekend.

Rip Current information taken from NOAA:

Look for differences in the water-color, water motion, incoming wave shape or breaking point compared to adjacent conditions. Look for these clues as one, all or none may be visible:

  • Channel of churning, choppy water
  • Line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward
  • Area having a notable difference in water-color
  • Break in the incoming wave pattern

They have a lot of images on their site and more detailed information here

How to Escape a Rip Current:

If caught in a rip current…

  • Remain calm. You will not be pulled under the surface of the water.
  • Only swim parallel to the shore to escape the current. As soon as you are out of the current, only then swim toward the beach.
  • Another option is to just float. Eventually you will reach the end of the current. Then …
    • Swim parallel to the shore to get out of the path of the rip current and once you do so, only then swim toward the beach

If you see someone in trouble…

  • Throw the rip current victim something that floats–a lifevest, a cooler, an inflatable ball.
  • Get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, call 9-1-1.
  • Yell instructions on how to escape the rip current. Tell them which way to swim.
