Blurred Lines: Plagiarism, or Not?

Marvin Gaye’s family has accused Robin Thicke’s smash single “Blurred Lines” of plagiarizing “Got To Give It Up,” the 1977 R&B dance song. Thicke has stated he was inspired by “Got To Give It Up,” and “Blurred Lines” evokes 70’s funk music, but does it go to far?

What do you think?

The Beauty of Pollination

Friends and GMG readers share the most beautiful treasures, including the following film, sent in by Mary Weissbaum. Mary writes, “The hummingbird doing rolls chasing a bug is neat! Watch closely and check out the baby bat under its mama (@ ~2 min, 38 sec). Unreal !! If you never knew what goes on in the garden when you aren’t paying attention, watch this – some of the finest filmography you will ever see.” Thank you Mary!

I have posted this video before and think it is worth seeing again, and again!

Songwriting legend Ellis Paul at Old Sloop on Friday

The folks at Old Sloop took the summer off, but are back in the concert business with a bang this Friday presenting one of the most celebrated Boston-based songwriters alive today, Ellis Paul with Berklee’s Susan Cattaneo opening.

You can often get Old Sloop tickets at the door, but that’s not likely for this one.  So you might as well get them here (plus you’ll save $4).  Check out the performer videos below!

Video: Time Lapse Parade of Sails Through Gloucester Inner Harbor

The taller ships start appearing around 1:50, but I liked seeing all the smaller boats, too. Look for the Stanley Thomas lobster boat closer to the beginning. After the Parade I walked out onto the rocky ledge near the Eastern Point Lighthouse, but as you can see in the second-to-last clip, a thunderstorm was on the way and I had to skedadle.

Beautiful Event to film-to many of us, Gloucester is our “somewhere over the rainbow.”

Video: Sista Felicia’s Book “Gifts of Gold” Red Carpet Interviews

The Gifts of Gold Gala Event was a smash hit in every way, from the outstanding hors d’oeurves and refreshments, all prepared from the pages of Gifts of Gold, to the stunning decor, created by Felicia, Daphne, and friends. Lillian, Rick, and Joey are wonderful interviewers and, with everyone there to celebrate Felicia’s much deserved success, there are lots of sweet moments in the video. Thank you Sista Felicia for a wonderfully memorable evening!

Video: Sunset Sail Aboard the Gorgeous Schooner Thomas E. Lannon

Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.

I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun.  I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!

Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Seafood Throwdown
NAMA’s Niaz Dorry with the Mystery Fish (gray sole) at a July 2010 Seafood Throwdown won by Sugar Mags

Can you feel it?  People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year.  It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do.  Take today for instance.  Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets.  See the full live music schedule here.

Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria.  Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!

See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.

Rare Footage of a Luna Moth Taking Flight

Beauty on the Wing ~ A Luna Moth takes Flight

My friend James, the facilities director at Willowdale Estate, sent a photo of a newly emerged moth on Sunday afternoon. He initially thought it was a paper napkin stuck to one of the lampposts, but upon inspection, discovered that it was a Luna Moth (Actias luna). With high hopes the moth would still be there, I dropped everything and raced over to Willowdale to photograph and film the moth. It is not that the moths are particularly rare, but that they are most often seen in flight at night.  Lucky me, to have had such a wonderful encounter with one of the most beautiful moths in all the world!

The Willowdale Luna Moth is a male of the species; you can tell by his bushy and feathery plumosa (or antennae). The female’s antennae are more thread-like. Notice too, just before he takes flight, how his body vibrates, which helps warm and energize the wings in preparation for flying.

Luna moths are members of the Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae. With a wingspan of typically up to four and a half inches, atypically up to seven inches, they are one of North America’s largest moths. Luna Moths are most often seen in the earlier part of summer in our region; this Luna Moth encounter took place on August 11, 2013. Luna Moths, like all members of the Saturn family of moths, eclose without mouthparts. They emerge solely to mate and deposit eggs of the next generation and live for only about one week.

Luna Moth larvae (caterpillars) feed on wide variety of broadleaf plants and different geological populations of Luna Moths are adapted to different hostplants. Northernmost populations most often feed on white birch (Betula papyrifera). More southerly populations feed on persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), hickories (Carya), walnuts (Juglans), and sumacs (Rhus).

The damage done by Luna Moth caterpillars on host trees is never significant enough to harm the host trees. Please don’t spray your trees with pesticides or herbicides!

A note about the music playing in the background ~

Ave Maria, Ellens Gesang III, D. 839, No 6, 1852, was composed by Franz Schubert in 1852 and is a setting of seven songs from Walter Scotts epic poem The Lady of the Lake. Performed by Barbara Bonney.

Thank You Jeff Amero and Crew At J&L Welding

So the massive push cart that saves Frankie and my backs from having to drag the thousands of lbs of lobsters and totes of bait around the dock had rotted out wheels.  It happens- Saltwater’s a bitch, turns everything to shit.

So I asked Jeff  from J and L Welding to take a look at our rusted out and broken wheels and order new ones to do the job.  Only hitch is that this piece of equipment is vital to our operation and to be without it for even one full day would kill us.  Brought the cart in at 7:40AM I got a call by 10:00AM to come pick it up, it had been all rehabbed before the boats would start hitting the dock with lobsters.

Huge huge thanks to Jeff and his crew at J and L welding.  If you need this type of work done- do not hesitate to call them- 978-283-3388

Rhumb Line Monday Night Jam 18th Anniversary Celebration feat. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski of Trey Anastasio Band

Every once in a while you just have to step back, take a breath and marvel at the fact that you can go out on a Monday night and see some of the world’s best musicians jam in an intimate venue right down the street from where you live.  And it’ FREE!  Check out this note from Dan King about tonight’s very special Rhumb Line Jam:

Tonight is the 18th Anniversary of The Rhumb Line Monday Night Jam Celebration. The Jam has seen many ups and downs, countless players and attendants and many hosts holding down the fort over the years. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski, two obvious jam masters being in the Trey Anastasio Band, are joining in to help us celebrate. It’s a closed Jam with a schedule of former and current musicians who’ve kept it alive, making for an amazing night of mayhem. Early Start at 8:30pm by Bandit Kings to get it rolling since they’re the current caretakers. Thanks for making my little idea such a big piece of Cape Ann Music.

Here’s an example of the kind of jam that gets going when all these folks get together.

Another reason to be glad you live in Gloucester!
