Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and Secretary Kerry

Together with the Essex National Heritage’s 20th anniversary celebration, 131 Trailblazing organizations where honored at last night’s grand gala, held at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. Over 300 Essex Heritage supporters were in attendance.

Very special guest Secretary John Kerry, who helped craft the legislation in 1996 that designated the area (and worked with Senator Kennedy over many years to secure funding), gave an inspiring speech highlighting the fact that the past twenty years of this unique public-private partnership has created the tremendous success that is the Essex National Heritage area.

Congratulations to the Essex National Heritage and all the Trailblazers!

The best fun seeing these four at the gala!! Captain Stefan Edick of the Schooner Adventure, Captain Tom Ellis of the Schooner Lannon, Mayor Sefatia, and Tom Balf, Director of Maritime Gloucester.

 

 

A special toast was given to the following Trailblazers:

Preserving this Special Region: Essex County Greenbelt Association; Connecting People to Place: The Trustees of Reservations; Building & Growing Our Future: Peabody Essex Museum; Advancing Our Educational Mission (tied for first place): Lowell’s Boat Shop and The House of Seven Gables. Of special note to Cape Ann residents, Maritime Gloucester came in second place and Essex Shipbuilding Museum came in third place in the category Advancing Our Educational Mission.

Science All Around Us with Collin Keegan Update

We’d like to thank all of you once again for your support of this project. While we did meet the initial objectives of the Kickstarter campaign – to create a finished Pilot for the series, develop a strong presence on social media, and pitch the Pilot coast to coast, there have yet to be any offers to pick up the program from traditional broadcast outlets. It was received with great interest (including a possible appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show), and as some of you know from the SAAU Facebook page, it received third place at the Red Shed Film Festival in Rockport, MA.

Nubar and his production company, Walker Creek Media (WCM), have been in touch with a producer who loves this project and believes it can be a success. Based on his advice and his own success with non-traditional media, WCM has created the first episode of Science All Around Us, which will be available for sale online as a Video On Demand (VOD). The idea here is to build a measureable audience…..10,000-30,000 downloads…. at $2.99 each. This is not simply about money, but about demonstrating to advertisers the strength and commitment of the audience for the series. The funds for the next episode will come from a monthly fee from advertisers on the SAAU website. (As an example, the producer mentioned above has a show on YouTube about woodworking with 30,000 subscribers and generates a daily average of $1324 from advertisers.) Meanwhile, Collin has continued to be buoyed by all the support and interest and has moved forward on several other avenues. He has maintained his interest in science, providing a weekly Science public announcement for his school this year. He has participated in the science fairs each year – doing some really creative research and exciting other students with hands-on activities on sound and the science behind 3-D images, started his own computer company Coltch Computing and learned to fly a plane. He’s also been invited to be the student keynote speaker at the MassCue in October of 2016 at Gillette Stadium, a conference for “computer use in education.” And this is the short list of what he’s doing.

When last we reported on Tuesday evening, Science All Around Us had reached the halfway point towards their fundraising goals. We are so excited to share that in only four days, through the generosity and good faith of of 223 backers, they have raised another $6,000.00, bringing the new total to $24,336. Science All Around Us is a project truly worthy of our donations.

This is wonderfully exciting news not only for Captain Tom, Colin, and Nubar, but for our community at large. If you haven’t yet backed their Kickstarter program to raise funds for the the pilot of the series, Science All Around Us, the first of which will be created aboard Gloucester’s own Schooner Thomas E. Lannon, now is the perfect time. With less than two weeks to go, the project will not go forward unless the full $35,000. needed for the pilot is raised.

Eight Year Old Boy Kick-Starts An Extraordinary Educational Series

Captain Tom Ellis of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon and Nubar Alexanian of Walker Creek Media are working together to bring to fruition an amazing young boy’s vision: a science educational series created by and starring a kid. The series, “Science All Around Us,” will be produced right here in Gloucester, and so far it looks beautiful.  Take a look at their Kickstarter campaign. 
This new friend of Captain Tom believes that science doesn’t only need to be taught by adults. Kids can (and should) teach other kids too! Right now, this amazing project needs your help. They’ve got the talent, the passion, the powerful idea and all they need are the resources to make it happen.  Even if you can’t donate, check out Collin’s answer to his father’s question about why we should care about science by clicking on the questions below. It will convince you this is a project that matters.

Captain Tom explains that in days gone by this would be a common sight in Gloucester Harbor, to see crews opening their sails to dry. Although it’s not necessary today because sails are constructed of synthetic fiber rather than cotton, on the Lannon, they dry their sails so that when the schooner departs with guests on board, the passengers don’t get doused when the sails are unfurled.

My apologies to our friends on the cruise that there are so few photos. This morning when looking at the images I noticed a giant black sploge on every photo–a huge goober on my image sensor. Here’s a few without the sploge after photoshopping out.

Today at Hunt’s photo in Melrose, my go-to place for all camera wants, needs, and crisis, Doug showed me how to professionally clean my image sensor, and its not as scary as you might think!

Visionary, Captain and now Documentarian Tom Ellis, presents his program, Building the Thomas E. Lannon (See above.)
Using historic footage meticulously captured by award winning videographer Al Viator, shot as The Will to Build, between Oct. 1, 1996 to June 30, 1997, Tom Ellis has crafted his personal story of the creation of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon from dream to design , through the challenges of construction to the triumphant sail into Gloucester Harbor.

Admission: $8 members, $10 nonmembers

Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.

I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun.  I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!
