Kay Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund Raiser
A scholarship fund to benefit local students of the tourism and hospitality industry has been set up in memory of Kay Ellis, who worked diligently for many years on many tourism ideas and issues and helped elevate Gloucester as a tourism destination. She loved the maritime and hospitality business and she put her heart and soul into it, working with the Chamber of Commerce and Discover Gloucester, all the while promoting Schooner Lannon. We hope to share her vision through the scholarships

We Lost One Of The Best Friend, Ambassador, Hearts In Our Community In The Loss Of Super FOB Kay Ellis Yesterday
There aren’t enough words to describe the generous, true spirited, genuinely lovely person that Kay is. The world can use a bajillion more. I’m not sure there were many others that left as many 100% positive impressions on every person they met as The Ellis Family has left through their work of passion on The Most Beautiful Boat In Gloucester Harbor, The Schooner Thomas E Lannon. We will miss her dearly. Like I said, there are no words that can explain how perfect she was. There’s no way you could duplicate her spirit. Thank you Kay for all you’ve done for the community, the GMG community and my family. We love you and miss you.
Our heartfelt condolences to Tom and The Ellis Family.

Kay’s Obituary from son Brian-
Kay (Bonaventura) Ellis, 65, of Gloucester passed away at home on March 2, 2016 after a yearlong battle with ovarian cancer. Kay was the loving wife of Tom Ellis whom she shared 37 years of marriage.Kay was born in Beverly, MA on October 22, 1950 to the late Louis and Margaret (Larkin) Bonaventura.
Kay grew up in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School in 1968. She studied at UMass Amherst and graduated in 1972 with a BA in Sociology. Kay spent most of her life in Gloucester.
Kay’s husband Tom always dreamed of building a schooner to help bring history alive and introduce tourist and locals alike to the amazing wonders of Gloucester. Tom was the dreamer, but Kay made it happen. In 1997, Kay and Tom sold their other businesses, borrowed every nickel they could, and built the Schooner Thomas E Lannon. For the last 17 years, every 5th grader in the City of Gloucester has come for a sail welcomed by Kay and Tom. She and Tom played host to many of the best parties in town.
Before owning the Schooner Lannon, Kay also co-owned Essex River Basin Adventures in Essex. Kay had previously been a reading teacher, Realtor, and worked for the Beverly Housing Authority.
Kay served the City of Gloucester and the Cape Ann community in many ways. She served on the West Parish and O’Maley School PTOs, the School Connection, the North of Boston CVB, and helped start the Discover Gloucester DMO.
Kay loved life. She and Tom often told their friends and sons that their goal was to have all the fun of retirement early. And so for the last 8 winters, they would drive a few thousand miles from Gloucester, MA to Driggs, ID. There, they would ski 80+ days every winter at Grand Targhee in Wyoming. Kay was always first on the chairlift in the morning for fresh powder. She would ski hard all day and then go cross-country skiing with her dog, Lucy in the afternoon while Tom read cowboy and pirate books. One of Kay’s favorite memories was taking her granddaughter Sydney skiing for the first time. She loved travel, skiing, horseback riding (she grew up riding at Pine Tree Equestrian Center in Beverly Farms), and most of all adventure.
Kay is survived by two sons, Heath J. and his wife Yvonne G. Ellis of Gloucester and Brian T. and his wife Malisa K. Ellis of Arlington. Kay is also survived by her grandchildren, Sydney K. Ellis and Eliza G. Ellis. Kay was the sister to the late Paul Bonaventura. Kay is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Kay’s celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at the Gloucester House 63 Rogers Street, Gloucester, 6:00 pm. Relatives and close friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in Dolliver’s Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kay’s honor to “Turning the Tide Ovarian Retreat” which was a great encouragement to Kay in her last year. They should be sent to the

MAYOR SEFATIA, KAY ELLIS, AND BOB RYAN HONORED AT DISCOVER GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY PARTY!
The annual Discover Gloucester holiday and awards party was held today at Latitude 43. A delightful luncheon was served followed by the award presentation. A stellar group of Gloucester can-do citizens was in attendance and it was a pleasure and honor to be amongst so many who have dedicated themselves to doing tremendous good for our community, especially where so much of their work is done behind the scenes and goes unsung. Thanks to Joey for suggesting that I cover the event for Good Morning Gloucester. He wished so much that he could be there to honor Kay, Bob, and the Mayor but it’s that time of year when work at the dock is nonstop.
A rising tide lifts all boats!

Front row left to right: Maggie Rosa, Linn Parisi, Donna Ardizonni, and Ann Straccia
To receive a Gloucester Citizenship Awards is a very special honor and it is truly only bestowed upon the most deserving. At the award ceremony last night the love and positive energy had by family and friends for these outstanding Gloucester citizens was palpable. Melissa Cox presenting Donna’s award, and sharing a funy story about removing dead seagulls from the beach.
Here at GMG we are very proud of all the recipients, but especially, especially proud that our own Donna Ardizonni was nominated for her good work with the One Hour at a Time Gang. We are very proud too of our GMG super FOB and friend John McElhenny for his stellar job in spearheading the Burnham’s Field improvements and in turning it into a gorgeous new community playground, garden, and park.
Mike English Honoring Terry Sands
On a personal note, I am also very proud that a very dear friend, Terry Sands, is one of this year’s honorees, for his extraordinary work directing (along with his co-director Mary Curtis) the fabulous Annisquam Village Players, for the past TWENTY- SEVEN YEARS!
Kay Ellis Honoring Linn Parisi for her work with Discover Gloucester
Each winner was honored by a friend or colleague and it was wonderful to learn about the roles they have played in making our beautiful community all the more beautiful. Gloucester is a very special place to call home and it is people like this year’s 2014 Citizenship Award recipients that make our city profoundly unique and, simply awesome! Our most heartfelt congratulations to the 2014 Citizenship Award winners!!!

Video: Sunset Sail Aboard the Gorgeous Schooner Thomas E. Lannon
Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.
I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun. I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!
Cindy Hendrickson Pitches Cape Ann Foodies Tour
Hey Joey,
It was so much fun seeing you at the Stage Fort Park Visitor’s Center Opening. Thank you for posing with the new Cape Ann Foodies Signature Fork.
Here are a few pictures of some of the Usual Tourism Suspects mugging with the Fork.
Cape Ann Foodies is the creation of Gloucester local Patrick Halloran. What a great idea – a walking tour that combines History, Food, and Local Beer. It is fun and filling!
Check out the website: http://www.capeannfoodietours.com or give him a call at 617-902-8291.
I am excited to be one of his tour guides this year; just need to lose the crutch and I’m good to go.
Cheers!

Kay Ellis writes-
Hi Joey,
We are a having an exciting sail on Monday night from 6-8 and were wondering if you could spread the word for us. I have attached a flier for the event.
The Lannon and the Ardelle have been sailing around the harbor together all summer. On Monday night we are raising the ante and having a race.
Mention that you heard about the race on GMG when you call and you and everyone with you will receive $5 off your ticket price.

All together it’s like a $85 value that you get for only $35. but you know what? Even if it was $85 I bet everyone that went last year would buy tickets again because it was THAT great a night.
So if you are one of my peeps, I want you aboard so we can hang smoking the finest cigars, drinking the finest rum and sailing aboard the most beautiful boat in all of Gloucester Harbor, the Thomas E Lannon.
Tickets are not going to last. Please if you know you are one of the people I like to hang with call Kay at the Lannon ticket office and reserve your spot so we can chillax together.

Some Young Fillies Enjoy A Day In Gloucester Video
This is what connecting the waterfront to Main Street is all about. Listen to the girls tell us how they spent the day on the water and then came up town to shop and partake in the Block Party. It’s all related and everybody wins. The waterfront and downtown do not have to be mutually exclusive. Kudos to Kay and Tom Ellis for sending their passengers downtown to explore and have fun. They’re good people those Ellis’ are I tell ya!
