VIDEO: Schooner Adventure Sails Again

Cape Ann TV’s Lisa Smith sent this video by Josef Hnulik, filmed aboard Schooner Adventure during this year’s Schooner Festival  featuring Daisy Nell & Captain Stan on the soundtrack.

Come aboard the Schooner Adventure for a sail in Gloucester Schooner Festival’s Mayor’s Race. It is the Adventure’s first race after she underwent a restoration project lasting two decades. The crew is proud of this historic fishing vessel, as they are the ones who restored her to her former grandeur.

What was on your top ten playlist this past summer?

For a mini film project about Gloucester in which I am working (almost finished!) I have been immersed in summertime music. Here are a few of my favorites from this summer, in no particular order ~

Two from Daft Punk and they are”Get Lucky,”and “Lose Yourself to Dance” both featuring Niles Rodgers and Pharrell Williams. I love Pharrell Williams singing on both–he’s also featured on another favorite, “Blurred Lines.” After the controversy over the similarity between Robin Thicke’s summer hit and ” Your Precious Love,” and to honor Marvin Gaye, “Got To Give It Up,” along with “Your Precious Love,” were played often.  Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s “Same Love” is gorgeous and “Can’t Hold Us” is perfect for Greasy Pole footage . “Vacation” by the Go-Go’s and “Dreaming” by Blondie always make it onto my summertime playlists, as does IZ’s “Over the Rainbow.” I think “Stay” by Rihanna, featuring Mikky Ekko, is beautiful and so is “#Beautiful,” sung by Mariah Carey and Miguel. Two that make me cry but which also makes them especially perfect for the end of summer are “Summertime Sadness” and “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey.

I love this sweet song, “Daydreaming,” from the band Groenland, out of Montreal. Their first album was released in April of this year. About the title of their album, The Chase, the band writes, “The Chase is the pursuit of an ideal, the desire to be in constant evolution, our tendency to put ourselves in danger to understand what we’re made of. It’s also about taking risks, for our own self, alone, or with someone.”

Local rising star, Michael Thomas Doyle opens for The Slide Brothers Nov 2 in Beverly

Local singer/songwriter Michael Thomas Doyle will open for legendary pedal steel masters, The Slide Brothers on Saturday, November 2 at Beverly’s fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre.

Mike Doyle has been compared to John Mayer, with the Noise Magazine proclaiming his “talent by the boatload,” and likening his live guitar skills to those of Keith Richards.  Mike is one of those young musicians you want to watch over the next few years.  See a short bio of Michael Thomas Doyle here and  get tickets here.  It won’t be long before you’ll have to pay over a hundred bucks for a crappy seat in a huge venue far away with expensive parking if you want to see him.  Check out the video to see what we mean:

Gloucester Based Cycling Show- Behind The Barriers

Yeah, why would we want this kind of thing here, right?  The people that rally against the world class event Cyclocross in Gloucester honestly baffle me.  Anyway check out the episode-

Behind THE Barriers heads to Gloucester, Massachusetts, for the Great Brewers Gran Prix of Gloucester, known across the cyclocross community as “New England Worlds!” Jeremy Powers is back in Gloucester after a long swing away from home, and is keen to repeat his winning effort from one year prior. Bluesy Rock ‘n’ Roller Peter Wolf is best known for his stretch as the front man with the J. Geils Blues Band, where he was known for his stage antics and quick wit. After seeing the J. Geils Band in concert for the first time, Wolf immediately joined the band where he became not only the leader of the group, but also handled much of the group’s business affairs. The band soon became well known for their vivacious and exciting live performances. After gaining recognition in New England, they caught the attention of Bill Graham, a well-known promoter who continued to book them, helping them gain fans in every city they visited.

After the band parted ways in 1983 due to creative differences, Wolf took on a solo career releasing seven solo albums and collaborating with countless musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. His sixth solo album Sleepless was listed as one of the 500 “Greatest Albums of All Time” by Rolling Stonemagazine in 2002, and his most recent release, 2010’s Midnight Souvenirs, won best album at the Boston Music Awards Some of his best solo hits include “Come as You Are”, “Lights Out”, “99 Worlds” and “Nothing But the Wheel”.

Wolf will be joining us at the Shalin Liu Performance Center with a special acoustic show to share some of his new music, old favorites, and that hugely charismatic stage presence for which he is so well known.

Hometown Girl, Caitlin McGrath, makes it big in LA

Joe McGrath send us this post about a new single and independent record label from Gloucester native, Caitlin McGrath.  Check it out!

Caitlin McGrath released her first single and music video this month under her independent label. The video depicts her ‘Change of Scenery’ song starting with a drive to the airport in the ’65 Buick Riviera, then a trip around the globe to Japan, Korea, Italy, Morocco and more. Caitlin is working in LA, but will be visiting Cape Ann next month for her sister’s wedding celebration.

Pod of Harbor Seals at Brace Cove

This morning at Brace Cove there was a pod of Harbor Seals sunning themselves; unfortunately a little too far out of range for my movie camera, but I tried filming nonetheless. They were wonderful fun to observe especially as the younger members of the pod seemed more interested in playing “King of the Rock,” rather than basking in the sun. It was challenging to figure out a total number because the younger seals were so playful, but I think there were ten in the herd. I only know this from one of the snapshots where you can see ten in all. Because the Harbor Seals were out of my camera’s ability to sharply focus, the footage may be too grainy, but I will try working with it.

In case you are wondering, as did I, a goup of seals is most commonly referred to as a pod or colony. The terms harem, herd, and rookery are also used, depending upon from where you originate.

I can only hope the young Harbor Seal hauled out at Good Harbor Beach earlier this summer has a pod to which it belongs!

Good Harbor Beach, with Great Blue Heron and mini time-lapse sunrise towards the end.

Oftentimes I see herons, gulls, and crows fishing peaceably together at daybreak. Not this morning! The heron vigorously defends its territory, while the crow has a reputation for stealing what others catch, and both are very hungry. Look for the heron eating an eel at about @1 minute 40 seconds.

No borrowed music in this mini film; the sound of crickets, shorebirds, surf, and train whistle make a song of their own, and I really wanted the heron’s loud quarking heard. Creating these mini films helps to organize B-roll for my Monarch film and the next daybreak video is the foggy morning sunrise with the whimbrels.

More Fun City- Roll Out The Barrel- Captain Joe and Sons 3:45AM

What were you doing this morning at 3:45AM? I mean where would you rather be than down the stinky wharf rolling out the stinky barrels to the stinky trailer of herring at 3:45AM.

I’m thinking of starting up a little side business for adventure travelers that would want to come visit Gloucester from all over the country.  I’ll charge them a nominal fee to help lug the barrels out and offload the bait trailer.  It’s a whole experience thing.  Once in a lifetime opportunity.  Get up early and fill your nostils with that pungent aroma of salted herring.  Ahhhhh, just take it all in……

VIDEO: Allen Estes & Howard Blackburn on Wicked Tuna

Last night Allen Estes performed his hit, “Not With Ya Hands” about Gloucester’s hero Howard Blackburn at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was filmed for next season’s Wicked Tuna by the Nat Geo crew.  And our own intrepid Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV.  We can’t show you everything we shot until early next year when Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, but we can show you Allen’s performance right now and you can catch a glimpse of the film crew at the end.

Best of all, you can see Allen Estes live with a new six-piece, all-star band on October 5th at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly.  You’ll hear old favorites along with new music he hasn’t yet recorded.  Allen — with his new band featuring multi-platinum guitarist David Brown with Fairport Convention founder Dave Mattacks on drums, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, Steve Burke on keyboards and Wolf Ginandes on Bass — will have you on your feet!

This will be a night you won’t soon forget.  Good seats are still available.  Get them here.
