Video: The Good Harbor Seal ~ What to do if you find a seal on the beach

The beautiful juvenile Harbor Seal was found on a foggy morning in midsummer. The seal was beached at the high tide line and its breathing was heavy and labored. It had no interest in returning to the water and needed only to remain at rest.

For the next six hours the seal struggled to survive the world of curious humans.

Learn what to do if you find a seal on the beach.

Written, produced, edited, cinematography, and narration by Kim Smith.

The Good Harbor Beach Seal PSA was created because of the lack of understanding on the part of my fellow beachgoers on how to mangae a seal encounter. Please help get the word out and please forward the link to friends and neighbors in other communities, whether or not the community is located by the sea. It was the folks from out of town that did not understand that the seal needed simply to be left alone. Thank you!

Although the Good Harbor Seal was not injured, help was needed with the gathering crowd. I called our local police, who in turn sent Lieutenant Roger Thurlow from the Environmental Police. Has anyone had experience with a marine stranding, and if so, is the following the best number to call: Northeast Region Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding and Entanglement Hotline ~ 866-755-6622? I will post your hotline recommendations here.

Technical note–The video was filmed without a tripod because I was afraid the tripod would look like a gun and didn’t want to further stress the seal. After reading more about Harbor Seals, I learned that their big brown eyes are particularly adapted to sight in murky water (i.e. harbor waters), but that their eyesight is not that good on land. In retrospect, I don’t think that the seal would have associated the tripod with a weapon. Also, I filmed at a distance much further away than my camera’s capabilities, which caused much vignetting around the edges of many of the clips. I didn’t want to stand close to the seal and be the filmmaker-who-becomes-part-of-the-problem, and not the solution.

Documentary Filmmaker Farhod Family Sheds Light on New England’s Struggling Groundfish Industry

WASHINGTON (Saving Seafood) August 5, 2013 — Brooklyn-based filmmaker Farhod Family has released a teaser for his yet-to-be-titled documentary film, in which he chronicles the hardships faced by fishermen in New England’s groundfish industry.

Mr. Family began working on his self-funded documentary in September of 2012 after the federal government declared the New England groundfish industry to be in a state of economic disaster. Since then, Family has reached out to the National Science Center (NSC), attended New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) meetings, and met with the fishermen whose livelihoods are being threatened by cuts to their allowable catch.

Mr. Family’s film will provide an in-depth look at the groundfish industry, from the efforts of New England’s fishermen, young and old, to fish processors, and ice companies, all of whom play an important role in coastal communities and waterfront business throughout Massachusetts. The film will explore ports in Gloucester and New Bedford, as well as the town of Scituate, Massachusetts, a small fishing community that is on the brink of losing its entire fleet.
Mr. Family began his journalism career covering the 2009 presidential elections in Iran. Since returning, his work has appeared in PBS Frontline, The New York Times, Washington Post, Global Post, NHL, NFL among others.  He holds a BA in history and French from the University of Hawaii, and an MS in digital media from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Kelly’s Roast Beef Rap Is Outstanding But We Up Here On The North Shore Know It’s Nicks All Day Long and Everybody Else Is a Distant Second

I’ve had roast beef sandwiches late night since back in my days at Bishop Fenwick in 83.  Had em all over the place.

Listen to me right now- Kelly’s Roast Beef isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Nick’s Roast Beef.  I could rattle off two or three other roast beef joints that decimate Kelly’s Roast Beef in the roast beef game.  9 times out of 10 Kelly’s comes with gray dried out meat.  Nothing like the succulent rare beef you’re gonna get at Nicks.

Supreme’s, Rockport House easily better than Kelly’s.  Not to mention you go to Kelly’s and their prices are freakin outrageous.

I’ll give Kelly’s props all day long for the video though.  Outstanding.

A rap video don’t make the beef taste better though bro.

When you want the best its Nick’s FTW.

Young, rising star Alexandra Valenti premieres on Local Music Seen tomorrow

Over the past few years, we’ve profiled a number of rising stars from Cape Ann.  Here’s our latest pick for whom to watch: Alexandra Valenti. Her insightful songs and endearing spirit captivate audiences and keep you listening, wanting more.

You can see her live at the Town Hall Stage at 3pm during Manchester’s Festival by the Sea this Saturday.  And you can be introduced to her on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  She sings three wonderfully original songs and speaks candidly — and with wisdom beyond her years — about the songwriting process and music business.  Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

“I’m on a tightrope, balancing myself so I don’t choke on fear.”  You can tell she’s going places if she’s already writing lyrics like that.  You might as well catch this rising star while you can close to home.  It won’t be long before she’s playing big venues far away for a steep ticket price.
