I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we Schraffts are summer people. Let there be no mistake that I love my job… and I mean no offense to my amazing little students, but the count down to summer vacation is almost more excitement than I can even stand. Total giddiness….epic warm fuzzies.
Sure, beach days, quick getaways, sleeping in, music on lawns, margaritas on decks, sushi feeding frenzies, long nights by the fire pit and dirty, salty, and happy kids = a happy mom, but one of the most exciting parts of summer vacations is NO MORE LUNCH PACKING.
Possibly you can’t relate to this. So forgive me. But, lunch packing is my least favorite thing…ever. It isn’t that its hard…it is just so damn Ground Hog’s Day. Unpack the lunch boxes, soak the containers, wash, rinse, dry….and repack. Ugh. It doesn’t necessarily help that I started to put a little photo in each of the boys’ lunch boxes when they were toddlers and now neither of them will let me stop. SOOOO….factor in the “pick-a-photo-and-wrap-it-in-the-shark-print-cloth-napkins-that-they-like-to-use” step…and I’m S.P.E.N.T.
That brings me to my point. The school where I teach…and that my boys attend…has a “Green Initiative”. It is suggested, but obviously not mandated, that the children have as little trash as possible in their lunch boxes. Now, complain as I have about the process of packing lunches, I am more than happy to do my part to not only leave a smaller footprint, but to also teach my boys that we need to be conscious of our impact on our environment and good friend, Planet Earth.
So, we buy big containers of yogurt and scoop daily amounts into small lunch containers. My boys drink ice water from reusable water bottles and don’t use juice boxes, etc. We don’t use little snack bag sized things like goldfish or chips…we just throw a handful or so into one of their reusable containers from the bigger bag.
The boys and I were talking earlier about the fact that today is World Oceans Day and that caused me to remember a friend’s reaction when she saw me packing the boys’ lunches one evening. It had never occurred to her to pack lunch “that way” (as she put it) and she was happy to start.
So, while packing lunches as a whole will remain annoying to me, I guess I am at least happy that we are doing our part. I’m glad the boys are learning a lesson….and, if there happens to be an ocean animal living life better somewhere because of our lack-of-lunch-trash then ever better. A win-win.

Remember the movie The Color Of Money where Tom Cruise hustles his way through the pool circuit?
Well I think we just may have landed the perfect horse to bet on- our boy Lindle.
Unassuming, old, not particularly in any type of ectomorph runners body shape and the absolute perfect man to back with odds against these young hot shot runners.
So we’ll just trot out our Horse Lindle, take odds against the youngsters and clean up when he kicks their butt all over the place! 
Our boy Lindle laid an absolute beat down, finishing 12th out of 218 runners at age 53!!!
To me that was a seriously impressive feet. Almost as impressive as TJ finishing and winning a whole 2 and a half minutes before the second place finisher.
But the story in this post isn’t about TJ’s extraordinary race as a 34 year old in the prime of his life. It’s about 53 year old Lindle Willnow and how he showed that you don’t have to be a 20 or 30 year old elite physical specimen to compete, you just gotta get out there and do it!
Congratulations Lindle, from all your GMG buddies we are seriously proud of you!
I have been having a terrible time with my iPhone 5. Apparently some people have had
a hard time shutting the iPhone 5 off, and unfortunately, I am one of them. Finally, it wouldn’t shut off at all, so after weeks of it on constantly, the battery was shot. So much time wasted each day with the crazy phone. Now I am a strong Apple fan and have been almost from the beginning of the company. BUT after driving an hour to an Apple store in our state of New Jersey, they said I would have to leave it with them for five or six days. I don’t think so. You should be very proud to have such a wonderful Radio Shack in Gloucester. A lovely woman called their tech, Travis, who was off for the evening, and believe it or not, after we spoke on the phone, he came right into the store. Travis set a time on his day off, the next day, and came in to work on my phone. Two hours later…FIXED! Completely, and for a fair price. I declare them better than Apple; never thought I would say that. Just know that if you have a technical issue, there is a good chance, Travis can fix it…cheerfully too! Thank you for fixing my iPhone, I feel blessed for stopping into Radio Shack. Linda

If you’ve been following our recent posts (like this one) you know we’ve been warning you of potential sell-outs, so you don’t lose out.
Last weekend’s James Cotton/Jay Geils show at The Larcom in Beverly sold out by Wednesday.
Next Friday’s (6/13) Concert Cruise featuring The Toasters with a special reunion of local favorites Mile 21 aboard Gloucester’s very own cruise ship, Beauport Princess is likely to sell out too.
The Toasters (called Ska “Pioneers” by Billboard Magazine) will bring their infections brand of Ska, Reggae, Jazz, Punk & Soul to Gloucester as part of their 2014 world tour.
Mile 21’s 2014 reunion features Lead Vocalist Mike Francis, Carlos Menezes, Jr. on trombone, Keith Amero on Bass, Steve Russo on Drums, Mike Lentini on saxophone, and Mike Goulart on lead guitar. These guys alone are worth the price of admission.
Tickets are only $35 in advance and include this very special Concert PLUS a Gloucester Harbor Cruise and Party Buffet featuring Seafood Grille’s world famous Lobster Rolls!
As you might expect, seating is limited (this is a cruise ship, remember) so if you want to get aboard, you’re going to have to act quickly and get your tickets here.
You don’t want to be one of those losers who waits until it’s sold out and then tries to convince Homeland Security to let you aboard, do you?

Recently, Hannah and I decided to make a new fresh ceviche recipe. Next we pitched some fresh chips in oil we keeps it real. Now look closely at the bowl and at my chip. There’s a secret ingredient thats creatively thrown in the mix here. Can you see it? Do you know what it is? Is it local? Was it alive? Is it Vegan?
Now if all the guesses are just way off, I’ll drop a new hint…and so on.

Hi Joey,
The Gloucester Marine Railway is a busy place these days. Everyone is busy getting their boats ready now that
we have some warm weather. The tug Towline is being painted. The Ardelle came out on Monday and was
powerwashed, Harold Burnham expects her to go back in Wed morning at high tide, about 5 a.m. The Adventure’s crew are
very busy painting, caulking, and replacing the outer section of the stem. Geoff Deckenbach expects her to go
back in on Wed evenings high tide, about 5 p.m. The Adventure will motor over to the Harbor Loop which she will make
her new home by the Maritime Museum. Meanwhile, the Phyllis A’s team is raring to go with her restoration, we are awaiting
word on when she can come up into dry dock. Workers pictured include Geoff, Manny from GMR, John Miles, Tony Finnociarro,
Sarah Tuvim, Katherine Richmond of KR Painting all on the Adventure, and Doug Parson’s with the Phyllis A. Michael Bergman
stopped by. He is very anxious to get back onboard to continue working on making the rat’s rails (ladder like structure up to the
top of the masts).
