Kathleen writes-

Wanted to let you know we’re opening our shop up this Monday, June 4. We’re located at 50 Maplewood Ave, Suite 3, next to 7/11 and the new McDonalds (we’re between Miguel’s and the car wash.) Our hours are going to be 10-7 Monday-Friday, with late Thursday hours until 9. Saturdays and Sundays we’ll be open 11-4, with extended hours for pre-registered rental customers to pick up and drop their bikes.
We have an awesome selection of used bicycles – road bikes, vintage cruisers, and mountain bikes, all of which have been tuned up and gone over with a fine-tooth comb – they all come with 30 day warranties. And from now until the end of June, if you buy a used bicycle from us, we’ll give you up to $10 in free accessories!
Big Mike also offers tune-ups for $45, and we are still offering mobile service for an additional $5 each way (so if you don’t have a big car or a bike rack, you can still get that bike fixed!) We do all manners of repairs, especially rehabs of those bikes in the cellar you’ve been ignoring for the last decade. They’re probably still good!
We’ve also got some great accessories here, from training wheels to grips to lights, locks, and helmets. We do rentals, as well! We have a fleet of hybrid/city bikes that are brand new, stylish, and locks and helmets are provided at no additional cost.
Hope to see you soon!

Minglewood Tavern Really Is Great

They are really hitting it on all cylinders with great specials every night of the week, a great drink menu, one of my favorites on a hot day is a cranberry margarita concoction that one of the best bartenders in town Brian Eastman makes-

The wood fired pizzas are excellent-

and the best salad in town the blackened chicken cobb, just bursting with flavor-

Kid friendly too-

Brian Eastman forwarded me this story about why we love crispy stuff in reference to my soggy French fry rant (Minglewood also has outstanding crispy on the outside/fluffy on the inside hand cut French fries)

New Good Morning Gloucester Series: Tips For PR Professionals

Hey I just created and edit a blog that reaches an average of 38,000 people a day and won CBS Boston’s Most Valuable Blogger Award.   What do I know, right?

gmglogohires200x200

I’m no professional but I’d like to offer up tips to the PR professional who may be responsible for getting out their client’s messages or their community organization’s message.

From an editor’s perspective who gets to decide what makes it on our pages I’ll offer up some tips on how to get the stuff you are interested in promoting, promoted.

Tip #1

Make it easy for the editor.

I’m running a business and get to tend to the blog in the sparse down time that I have from running the business that pays my bills.  Make shit easy for me.

The best press releases are interesting stories that provide some type of payback for my readership.

In the email that you send me pitching your idea, type it out the way you would like it written and in the subject line type the title of the post the way you would like to see it on the blog.

I’m not too proud, I’m a goddamn professional copy and paster, believe me.  If I can easily copy and paste your copy without it being in some crazy font or weird formatted margins that makes me happy.  The worst is when I  have to backspace 40 lines of copy to make it look like a normal paragraph and I tend to get irritated when I get something preformatted in some weird 7 words of copy per line.  The absolute worst.  I have better stuff to do than to realign your message.  I can create much more interesting stuff for my readership in the limited time I have to work on my publication than what I will be editing for you, believe me.

In the email you send, include the hyperlinks to the corresponding organization or where you want the reader to go for more info.

Provide a nice pdf and think about where it will be displayed.  For example: if your organization is making flyers to post on standard sized 8.5 x 11 inch paper for around town and you send that to me with standard sized font, when it gets shrunk down for display on the blog, the column which we display it will be about half that.  So the standard sized font you used for a coffee shop flyer will be half that size when posted the blog and barely legible if legible at all.

If you continually send me stuff that I need to edit the shit out of to make work I will ignore you (unless I really like you and you bring me food).

This will be a weekly feature.

Pass it on.

Hi Joey,

I had to change some chains for our docks recently and was mortified when I dug up the stem of one of the 150lb. mushroom anchors that hold them in place to find this.  I’m pretty sure I was one storm away from disaster!

Enjoy!

Beauport Makes Lonely Planet Top 10 World’s Greatest Mansion and Home List

Making it to the uber cool “Flipboard Picks”:  the latest Lonely Planet Top 10 world’s greatest mansion and home list

…and Gloucester ’s Beauport is on it!  Congratulations Sleeper-McCann.

Here’s the list

Lonely Planet : Live it up! The greatest mansions and grand houses.

1. Marble Palace Mansion , Kolkata , India
2. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion , Malaysia
3. Werribee Mansion , Australia
4. Villa d’Este, Italy
5. Castle Howard , England
6. Fallingwater , Pennsylvania , USA
7. Château de Chambord , France
8. Catherine Palace , Russia
9. Sleeper-McCann House , Massachusetts , USA

The lavish ‘summer cottage’ of interior designer Henry Davis Sleeper has over 40 rooms and is also known as the Beauport House. Sleeper toured New England in search of houses about to be demolished and bought up selected elements from each: wood panelling, furniture, wallpaper, coloured glass and china.  In place of unity, Sleeper created a wildly eclectic but artistically surprising – and satisfying – place to live. The mansion sits on rocks overlooking Gloucester Harbor and has Arts-and-Crafts-style terraces leading down into a series of garden ‘rooms’.

The house is in Gloucester, Massachusetts. You can visit the house between June and October, Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. The last hourly tour begins at 4pm.

GMG Inside The Numbers For Tuesday May 29th, 2012- 48,303 Views All Time- 18,392,976

Here are the stats from yesterday, 48,303 views.  It seems like the people who were busy with memorial Day parties checked in in droves yesterday.  The top ten posts by views are listed as well.

it has been a while since I’d checked out the all time views so I just pulled it up.  before I clicked on it I told Ed I figured it was probably around 15 million but I guess because the average daily has bumped up to around 38,000 per day the views have been racking up much faster than I even thought and I already had pretty lofty expectations.

Barred Owl Eating A Snake At Ravenswood Pics from Terry Weber

Last Sunday I received a call from Ramona Latham at the Cape Ann Discovery Center (Ravenswood). She told me that a Barred Owl had set up a nest for her babies in one of the treetops. While I was snapping photos of the baby owls, the Mama* owl stopped by with lunch for her children. A nice plump snake! I have never seen an owl in real life, so this bit of luck was a special treat. Some quick facts about the barred owl:

·    Commonly referred to as a “Hoot Owl.” Listen to its call here: http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/Song/h3680so.mp3
·    A Barred Owl’s wingspan can reach 44 inches.
·    They typically hunt at night or at dusk by sitting on a high perch, looking and listening for prey, which they catch with a short flight or drop to the ground.
·    Adult Barred Owls swallow their prey whole. Their stomach acids digest the soft parts, and then they regurgitate a pellet containing the bones and hair.
·    Barred Owls sometimes go fishing. They will wade knee-deep in water and catch fish with their feet.
·    Barred Owls generally live alone except when mating or raising young, and are known to find the same mate every year.

Thanks to Ramona for her phone call. If you want to visit the Discovery Center or Ravenswood, click here for more info:  http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/northeast-ma/ravenswood-park.html. Ramona runs a variety of fun and educational programs for children and adults throughout the year. Don’t miss out!

*This owl may have been the Papa owl too, no disrespect intended! J

This Webcam and more can be found at www.gloucesterwebcam.com

This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.

The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.

Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.
