CATA Launches New, Easier-to-Navigate Website 10.16.2026 | Gloucester, MA

Redesigned canntran.com makes it easier to explore routes, senior transportation, accessible services, fare-free transportation, and more across Cape Ann.

The Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA) has launched a redesigned website at canntran.com, giving residents, commuters, seniors, riders with disabilities, and visitors an easier way to find transportation services and plan trips throughout Cape Ann.

CATA provides public transportation throughout Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich, Essex, Hamilton, and Manchester-by-the-Sea, connecting people with work, healthcare, shopping, community resources, local destinations, and the MBTA Commuter Rail.

The new, mobile-friendly site brings CATA’s many transportation options together in one place with clearer navigation, more detailed service information, and practical resources designed around what riders need to know

What’s New?

Visitors to canntran.com can now:

  • Explore individual bus routes with schedules, maps, route highlights, and helpful trip information.
  • Find detailed senior and community transportation information by community, including Dial-A-Ride, medical transportation, shopping trips, dialysis transportation, and other specialized programs.
  • Learn about ADA Paratransit, including eligibility, applications, reservations, and how to use the service.
  • Get started with CATA On Demand, the app-based transportation service available in Gloucester and Rockport.
  • Plan summer trips without the car using CATA’s seasonal transportation to beaches, downtowns, attractions, and MBTA stations.
  • Find answers faster through an expanded FAQ center covering fares, accessibility, rider policies, specialized transportation, and other common questions.
  • Stay informed through a dedicated News section, homepage service alerts, and the option to subscribe for CATA updates.
  • Access public information including Board materials, financial records, reports, employment opportunities, and procurement information.
  • Contact CATA more easily through a new online contact form designed to help questions and requests reach the appropriate department.

The redesigned site is also built to work across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, making CATA information easier to access whether riders are planning ahead or looking for information while they’re on the go.

Ride Fare-Free

CATA’s expanded online resources come at a great time to give public transportation a try. CATA’s fixed bus routes, ADA Paratransit, senior Dial-A-Ride, and many other transportation services are currently fare-free through December 31, 2027. CATA On Demand remains $2 per ride.

Whether you’re checking tomorrow’s bus schedule, arranging transportation to a medical appointment, commuting to work, planning a car-free day around Cape Ann, or riding CATA for the first time, the new website is designed to make the next step easier.

Visit canntran.com to explore the new site, find your service, and plan your next trip.

STOP BEING A LAZY JOGGER!

Finally there’s something to help all the lazy joggers out there. If you’ve been wondering how you’re doing it all wrong, here is a little video to help you. Now stop sweating and starting living!

TOD Development Potential

I ran across this link to a MAPC study, browsing news for work. TOD or Transportation Oriented Developments are getting a lot of talk today and places like Melrose are already trying to capitalize on the idea. I thought to post the following link to the study  on GMG as the concept could be looked into for Gloucester and perhaps Beverly. The effort usually takes a zoning overlay district that allows mixed use developments and areas with strong connections to rail and bus systems. Not sure if anyone’s thinking along these lines already.

Follow this link to the MAPC (Metropolitan Area Planning Council) study of stations within the Metro area showing potential for development and capacity. Melrose has now proposed zoning changes in it’s Tremont/Essex Street Commuter Rail Corridor. Some of these include relaxed height restrictions allowing 4 stories, up from 2 stories, greater density, and broadened scope of allowed uses.  Great ideas for growth going forward with incorporation of public transportation as a foundation. http://bit.ly/1pWsmKY . IMHO!

Wind Turbine Transportation Time- Lapse Video From Jay Groccia

Jay Groccia from http://www.onsitestudios.com/   writes-

Hi Joey,

I was hired by Varian Semiconductor to produce a time-lapse documentary film of the installation of their wind turbine.

I started shooting this week and I met Fred of Bodin Historic Photo while the hostess was getting me a coffee Gloucester Cruiseport restaurant. He asked me a few questions about the project and then we said goodbye. The next day I walked into his shop and as soon as I entered he exclaimed, "Hey, I met you last night!". We chatted more and then he introduced me to your blog.

Here is a sneak peek of the film – it shows the barge arriving and a blade getting transported to the site.
