Where’s Homie?
Hi Joey,
Recently I’ve been spending time researching the history Gloucester, and have come across many photos of the fish drying yards that once covered the Gloucester Waterfront before the days of the modern refrigeration like this one circa 1906. There was always something about these photos that I found disturbing, and never figured out why until recently. Looking at the photos, it occurred to me that there is one ubiquitous element of Gloucester Harbor that is hauntingly absent… The gulls. Where are they? What is keeping them from the feast waiting right there on the wharf? If anybody knows the answer, please share.

Hi Joey,
On our last visit to Maritime Gloucester, there was lots of activity going on. The Building Center had a crew installing a new specimen on cabinet in the lab building (made of recycled pieces fromtheir old kitchen display), and Jay McLauchlin was rounding the edges of the new handrails on the wharf with a router. The whole place is going to look awesome for the Schooner Festival this year!

Storm Clouds Over Gloucester Harbor

I caught this formation over Gloucester Harbor Wednesday afternoon. This was part of the storm that the tornado warnings were issued about today. I was looking at the radar map on Weather.com and saw this red spot heading toward Gloucester. When I looked outside this is what I saw!

North Shore Kid Comes Through Again- Beginning Winter Birding At Halibut Point State Park
You know there is one singular site that when I’m trying to figure out something to do with the kids other than sitting around the house playing board games- North Shore Kid
The way Bill and Kelly have the site laid out, easy to navigate, highly searchable and always with direct links to the Children activity host’s website. It’s just such a treasure trove of information for busy parents looking for fun educational stuff to do with their family.
So the kids are on a three day weekend and The Mrs is great about making sure they get outside but had been scratching her head as to what to do. I go to the handy NorthShoreKid link in the sidebar on GMG, and lo and behold North Shore Kid is featuring a story about Beginning Birding at Halibut State Park.
Perfect, dress warm, get outside, see some cool migratory birds that happen to be stopping off at Halibut Point State Park and then hit one of the local coffee shops for some hot chocolate.

I had to change some chains for our docks recently and was mortified when I dug up the stem of one of the 150lb. mushroom anchors that hold them in place to find this. I’m pretty sure I was one storm away from disaster!

This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.
The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.
Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.

Washington Street’s Savour Fire Photos From Bill O’Connor
Bill writes-
Hi Joey,
Last night when I went out side, I could smell fire. The wind was blowing from the North so I knew something was up downtown. I drove over to the Paint Factory and from my point of view it looked like there was a building burning in the fort. I took some shots and headed over to town, and was surprised to learn that the fire was burning at the Savour Wine and Cheese shop on Washington Street.
There was a lot of activity, with a huge response from neighboring communities. I saw engines and personnel from Rockport, Beverly and Manchester in addition to Gloucester.
The fire was still burning when I got there and the wind was blowing pretty hard, fanning the fire and making it difficult for the crews fighting it. Apparently the fire started at Savour, then jumped to the building next door because of the wind. The Street would be clear of smoke, then a slight change in the direction of the wind would create a thick blanket of smoke – making it hard to see (and take photos).
Thankfully nobody was hurt, but Savour was totaled from what I could see. Anyhow, I thought I would share the photos I took.

Hi Joe,
Here’s a photo of two near winners of the Darwin Award from yesterday’s storm. This was a few minutes before high tide at Good Harbor Beach. Obviously, their need for attention far outweighed the value of the life of the person who was going to pull them out of the water if the undertow had taken them. Just a reminder to all the parents out there – make sure you teach your kids that it’s never a good idea to enter the surf in a storm surging tide during a Hurricane! The ocean is a powerful force and you should never taunt it like this.

Good Harbor Marsh Under Storm Surge Panorama From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joe,
While we were down at Good Harbor Beach just before high tide during the storm today, I took a series of photos of the incoming surge on the marsh side of the beach and stitched them together. While storms like these bring destruction and hassle for us humans, the surge is a form of renewal for the marsh habitat. This is rather large photo so click through to see the high resolution version!

One Man’s Junk….

I’ve noticed this floating around Cripple Cove since February or March and finally had a chance to check it out. It’s actually tethered in the cove. I thought it was a wonderful re-use of the flotsam floating around and wanted to pass it along to share. Somebody made this, and I applaud their creativity and effort.

Getting wet is an essential sailing skill! From Bill O’Connor
Hey Joe,
Just as the sailing program 420s got to the outer harbor today, the wind started blowing really hard from the South/South West. What would have been a nice evening sailing, suddenly turned into capsize practice! I think they had four boats turned over at one time, with at least two that were completely turtled. The kids righted those boats pretty quickly considering the conditions, and it looked like everybody got out of there in one piece. Sometimes the fun of sailing is the time you spend in the drink…
