The Cape Ann Museum, in collaboration with the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association, is pleased to present “Dead in the Water”, on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The documentary film dealing with the devastating impacts of federal regulations on the lives of New England ground fishermen was produced and directed by Rockport native and professional filmmaker David Wittkower. A panel discussion with film participants will follow each showing. Tickets are $8 for Museum members and $10 for nonmembers. Two and a half years in the making, “Dead in the Water” is Wittkower’s fifteenth documentary film. It was shot in different coastal towns and features scenes and interviews with area fishermen, their spouses and other family members; advocates for fishermen; elected officials; and community activists. “This film opens the doors for the world to see how difficult and dangerous the life of a fisherman is,” said John Bell, a former three-term mayor of Gloucester (2002 -08). “On top of that, the impact of misguided federal regulations on fishermen has never been presented as powerfully as it is in ‘Dead in the Water.’ This film packs a real punch. It stays with you long after you’ve seen it.” The film also includes the song, “Gloucester Harbor Shore” by Grammy® Award winner, Paula Cole.

Saturday – The upcoming Cape Ann Reads celebration at Gloucester City Hall is Saturday January 27 from noon to four. Gail’s article includes interviews with the four Library Directors and Mayor Romeo Theken. The color photograph that’s reproduced is a stunning drawing by Kim Smith from one of her children’s picture books, Beauty on the Wing. There’s also a photograph from Alice Gardner’s drawing installation at The Book Store for her published book St. Peter’s Fiesta. I needed a flashlight at first, mostly for the ice, long stretches in the parking lot then frozen ice scoops in the dry sand. I waited for sunrise, returing to spots I’ve favored since I was a little girl, adding glances back in the direction of Wheeler’s Point, where my parents lived, and over picnic boulders and slide pools out to Annisquam Lighthouse. The light was simultaneously a ring of orange mauve fire and rosy pale violet gray. More photos:

This month: come to Gloucester’s City Hall on January 27 for a Cape Ann Reads celebration. Explore early drafts & drawings as well as published children’s picture art and books–all by Cape Ann artists and writers. The Book Store of Gloucester will have a satellite book shop devoted to published picture books right on site.

“What was an important early personal acquisition?
“The Hopper painting. It’s called “Hodgkin’s House.” I was really nervous about it. It was at the time certainly the most expensive thing by far I had ever bought. It belonged to David Geffen. It’s one of the things that’s skyrocketed in value. There are just so few in private hands.”
Hodgkin’s House was one of nine Gloucester paintings included in the 1933 Museum of Modern Art Edward Hopper retrospective. The eight other paintings were: Cape Ann Granite, Houses of Squam Light, Haskell’s House, Marty Welch’s House, Adams’s House, Freight Cars at Gloucester, Italian Quarter, and Box Factory Gloucester
Christie’s auction house has released more information about one of the upcoming Rockefeller sales. It includes a good reproduction of Cape Ann Granite.

TOHP BURNHAM LIBRARY, ESSEX, MA is sited upon another breathtaking Cape Ann landscape with an easy family slope for winter fun.
Great effort! Sweet son gave a proper push to mom, intending to hop aboard, while his older sister raced on.
Reports were that two houses in Gloucester were on fire which is understandable as there was a beautiful attached in-law suite for this local family. Last evening’s sights, crunching sounds and smells were ferocious. The homeowners are safe. Firefighters and emergency personnel faced that challenging inferno and are ok. The house was deemed a total loss. Cape Ann Motor Inn at Long Beach provided shelter.

Rockport Road to the right of Long Beach Dairy Maid is closed – no access in or out to Long Beach Motor Inn (call first). Several fire trucks and emergency personnel are engaged and working on a cold, windy night. Safe wishes for all involved.
*Driving into Rockport via Thatcher Road was still open.
Cape Ann TV has great news: the Gloucester Inauguration 2018 video is ready for viewing. Erich Archer and Becky Tober remind viewers that the Cape Ann TV “camera system at city hall is still in standard definition and the quality is an issue because of the old equipment. Also, an electrical issue interrupted coverage an hour or so into the recording.” There’s more exciting news from Cape Ann TV: they’re replacing and upgrading all of the City Hall equipment soon.
Besides viewing it on Youtube, you can look for it on Cape Ann TV. It will be playing on CAPE ANN TV Channel 20

How would you caption this scene outside your window? My friend shared this photograph of a hawk eating an unfortunate bird on a small roof at her house by the boulevard, Gloucester, MA, January 6 2018.
The sidewalk path is plowed, and the oceanside parallel path is nearly completed. Gloucester DPW says they’ll “have 6-8 Bobcats with snowplows running all weekend–city’s and city contractors.” I’m sure there’s still much to happen and clear. Still, isn’t it amazing how many roads are spic and span, and that trash pick up was just one day held off?
