Magnolia Auction, Live & Silent Auctions, featuring spirits and hors d’oeuvres,  Saturday September 6th.

All are welcome to the “Little Red Schoolhouse”, under the tent, dealers welcome at the Blynman School, 46 Magnolia Avenue, Magnolia.  Wind down summer with a good time! 
A not-to-be-missed event, the MHS announces the Magnolia Auction! 

Live and Silent Auctions, HUGE silent auction 4-6pm.  Live auction 6pm. 

The event will be catered by Classic Cooks Catering, great food and drink!

Siren By the Sea

A graduation recital by Gillian Hurst (RHS Class of 2010), accompanied by Dr. Beverly Soll will take place on Sunday, August 24 at 4pm.  Gillian recently graduated from Westminster Choir College with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, summa cum laude.  They will perform approximately 45 minutes of music from the Middle Ages to Modern Day.  First Congregational Church of Rockport, 12 School Street.  Donations gratefully accepted to help fund studies at the University of St. Andrews.

Gloucester author  Jackie Zollo Brooks   will be the speaker at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Rockport Library on Thursday, August 28th at 7 PM on the second floor of the Rockport Library.

Jackie Zollo Brook, who is an alumna of Tufts University,  has  just written a  new romantic novel  entitled ā€œThe Ravenala ā€œ

She was a Teaching Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and also taught in the English Departments of the University of Massachusetts and Wentworth Institute. 

From 1997-1999 she was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar, serving as an English Teaching Supervisor. Her time in this beautiful but impoverished land and its people stayed with her. 

The Ravenala   is named for ā€˜the travelers treeā€™ found only in Madagascar.  A traveler cutting into the palmā€™s branches can receive a refreshing drink of cool water  Today she lives and writes full-time in Gloucester.

This meeting is open to the public and all are invited.

What if the idea of free choice is an illusion?  Wouldnā€™t that be disturbing?  After all, the notion that we are free to make the choices we make and especially the choices that determine whether we are successful or not, criminals or not, moral or not, responsible or not, and praiseworthy or not is at the very core of our religious, political, and moral codes. Religion makes us answerable for our actions because it says we have ā€œfree will.ā€ Our ā€œfreeā€ enterprise system assumes we are ā€œfreeā€ to make good or bad economic choices and is designed to reward us accordingly. Our criminal justice system punishes those who ā€œchooseā€ to commit crimes.

But suppose freedom of choice is just a myth. That is it just a rallying cry for Western Civilization.  Will our idea of freedom survive philosophical scrutiny? And if it doesnā€™t, what are we left with?  Thatā€™s what this discussion is about.

Grab some Reeses Pieces, itā€™s a gorgeous day and will be a memorable night to see ET on the HarborWalk Summer Cinema jumbo screen. Get there early, bring a picnic dinner or take out from the yummy vendors. You could have boiled lobster in the rough at Gloucester House or Topside and still see the screen! The pre-movie family tailgate is true community. Community Development has worked with Rob Newton from Cape Ann Community Cinema and Aurelia Nelson and the North Shore 104.9 team to make it festive. Thanks to Pop Gallery for helping to bring ET tonight and Gloucester Stage for The Lego Movie.

Donā€™t forget: if you havenā€™t yet, better hustle and SEARCH AND TRACE

There are many fun and free activities on the Gloucester HarborWalk. One of the great games dispersed throughout the entire HarborWalk involves a search and trace game at each story moment post. Children and adults will want to find all (or most) of the story moment posts and trace the unique symbol found on each one. These icons are on the binding of each story moment post. Take a pencil or crayon and make a rubbing of the symbol directly into the squares on these special print outs or onto your own tracing paper. You may need help holding the paper while tracing so bring a friend!

Here are files for printing these sheets. You can also find them on www.ghwalk.org or print outs at the summer cinema series movie nights or Stage Fort Visitor Center.

There is a special prize whenever a child brings or sends along a completed ā€œHunt on the HarborWalkā€ ANY TIME to Mayor Kirk at City Hall! City hall is located at 9 Dale Avenue.

Prizes will be awarded for collecting at least 10 icons and a special prize for collecting 20 icons. Anita Diamant Gloucester Ā©Kim Smith 2014TheĀ Eastern Point Lit House Writer’s Book Club, held at Duckworth’sĀ on Sunday evening, was an absolutelyĀ fantastic and super fun event. Anitia Diamant, authorĀ of The Red Tent and Good Harbor, was the guest writerĀ and she led a discussionĀ about Billy Collins, her favorite poet. Anita has attended several Billy Collins readings and describes herself as his fangirl. Collins is the former Poet Laureate of the United States and one of the most widely read and popularĀ of poets in American history.

Duckworths Ā©Kim Smith 2014The evening began with a beautiful array of delicious dishes, including shrimp with guacamole, Ken’s always fabulous polenta, and a medley of lightly cooked and dressed seasonal vegetables.

Guests took turnsĀ reading aloud poems from the collection titled Ballistics. Poignant,Ā humorous, accessible, and with a brilliant compactness of writing, Collins reportedly sites cartoons as one of his greatest influences.Ā Although I did not have time to read ahead of time, after listening to the selcetion of poems read aloud, I definitelyĀ look forward to reading Ballistics.Ā This brings me to the point that Ken Duckworth made, which is that at the Writer’s Book Club, no one need feel as though they must read the book prior to the event and that it can be just as interesting to hearĀ about the book selection for the first time from the perspective of other guests, which (as it has for me on several occasions) may in turn lead to reading the book.

Hobbit House II

Thanks to one of those unexpected miracles of the Universe manifested through dear friend, Alma McLaughlin, I have been given a great gallery space for the remainder of the season back on Madfish Wharf. Hobbit House II (aka Khan Studio & the GMG Gallery), located at 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 6, is a beautiful gallery overlooking Smiths Cove with great light and energy. The gallery features the works of Joey C., Donna Ardizzoni, Len Burgess, Tom Nihan, Linda Sodja, Judy Wilburn, Belle & Me, Kathy Chapman, and of course, me.

In collaboration with Regina Piantedosi at YUPO Gallery, G4, we are resuming the fun tradition of weekly GMG Mug Ups at Madfish Wharf, now being held weekly on Saturdays at 9:30am so Joey can come, followed at 11:00 by the Rocky Neck Art Walk.

It’s a pleasure to have back that rascal of the blues: Ms. Cheryl Arena. A great vocalist and harpist, she’s sure to have you shakin’ your tootsies all over the dance floor. We weren’t sure she was gonna make it, since she accidentally overdosed on Polish Fly last week and nearly broke her arm bowling. However, rest assured, all is well in bloozeland and we got the band to prove it. She’s bringing along Pete Henderson on guitar. Pete’s a real treasure and hasn’t been here in a long time. He’s killer! Forrest Padgett handles eggbeater duties, and I, Salmon Dave Sag provide cosmic relief.

Now That’s A Carousel

I am absolutely in love with this carousel! Ā Boston’s Rose F. Kennedy Greenway is unbelievable in so many ways and the carousel is the cherry on top! Ā The 14 different critters…all hailing from the fine state of Massachusetts…are whimsical yet gorgeous all at once. Ā It is a true piece of art! Ā How wonderful would it be to have a carousel of this caliber here in Gloucester?

The boys and I took the train into the city yesterday and spent 6.5 hours exploring, laughing, and learning between North Station and Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. Ā We walked through the Haymarket Farmer’s Market, past the North End, and along the docks of the Boston Harbor Marina to check out some of the crazy “mega yachts”. Ā We saw the seals at the New England Aquarium, got some lemon slush, and rode the newish “thrill ride”, CODZILLA (and got wet). The boys played in the splash pad on the Greenway, rode the carousel, and fed the pigeons. Ā We took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the financial district, had a nice outdoor dinner at Ned Divine’s, and then ice cream at The Berry Twist in Faneuil Hall.

My vision for our day in the city involved going at least as far as The Public Gardens, the Frog Pond, and the Swan Boats….but somehow, in the blink of an eye, it was time to catch the 7:40 train outbound to home. Ā A true testament to the wonder of the Greenway and surrounding areas is that we were able to spend an entire day there and still wish that we had more time. Ā Next time.
