Joe "The Animal" Barboza Baron, Thachers and Straitsmouth Islands and long distance ocean swimmers

Adam Bolonsky submits-

Mitchell Hsing and Isabel Brachmann, grad students at MIT (who said only nerds go to MIT?) recently swam the perimeter of Straitsmouth Island from Gap Head in less than 25 minutes. Their coach Bill Steele and I escorted them in kayaks.

Fish tacos afterwards at Cape Ann Brewing Company!

Here’s a video clip. You can clearly see Twin Lights at Thachers and Straitsmouth Island light in the background:

Joe “The Animal” Barboza was flown to Thachers Island each night by helicopter in the late 60’s while testifying against the New England mob. When Barboza’s cover at Thachers was blown, federal marshals moved him to a house on Eastern Point.

Barboza was gunned down a few years later in Southern California.

This was back in the day when the Coast Guard radio station at Gap Head was still in operation.

Win Henri Smith Concert Tickets at the Sidewalk Bazaar

HenriPoster_600Aurelia Nelson of North Shore 104.9 is doing it again … yup she’s bringing her prize wheel down to the Sidewalk Bazaar tomorrow (Thursday) and you can win 2 tickets to see Henri Smith New Orleans Friends & Flavours feat. Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell at the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit Concert to help raise money for the Cape Ann YMCA Camping & Teen Services.

This concert kicks off Schooner Festival weekend on Friday August 29 at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion (the BIG tent).

Henri Smith has been helping the YMCA raise money for teen programs ever since the Y started sending local teens to help rebuild his hometown of New Orleans.

These YMCA programs help nurture the potential of every child and teen as they improve our community’s health and well-being.  It’s an important cause worth supporting.

Stop by the North Shore 104.9 booth (in front of Cape Ann Savings Bank) and spin the wheel.

There’s no cost, no catch.

Just spin & you could win to tickets to see Henri Smith, who almost always sells out when he performs on the North Shore!

About the Artist;

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting

By Gail McCarthy Staff Writer

The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.

He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.

Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.

Walking Dead’s New Set?

Nope, it’s just a typical Friday at the Market Basket. Yep, this snap was taken on FRIDAY! What normally looks like a mad dash for the latest Cabbage Patch Kids release (my age revieled) with folks jamming up supplies for the beach and the weekend cookouts, looks more like an abandoned prison about to run over by zombies.

This thing has a spooky feel at this point. (you know your trying to see who’s vehicles those are)

I guess that’s why it’s singular in the name…Basket.

Let’s hope these hard working and committed folks get their life and jobs back before it’s too late. And let’s hope it’s before it’s starts to look like Fuller, and we start calling it Ghetto Basket.

Community Stuff 8/6/14

Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out? My name is Jared Rodriguez, and I am the Junior sailing director at Eastern Point Yacht Club. Next week we are hosting the US Sailing Mass Bay Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and are in need of spectator and safety boats. I remember 2 years ago Annisquam Yacht Club had a post on here and was a huge success. Please let me know if you can help!

Best,

Jared

Good morning Joey,

I am Antrella Grice Johnson, ex-wife of Howard “Raf” Johnson, the bait wagon fellow who sold bait. He passed away on Friday July 11, 2014, losing his battle with cancer.

I am holding a Memorial for him on Friday August 8th at 1:00 P.M. at the State Fish Pier.
