ArtsBoston released in a new 2014 report on the economic impact of the arts in MA
Hi Joey,
Here’s some exciting data that ArtsBoston released in a new 2014 report on the economic impact of the arts in MA. See the link for the complete report and a couple surprising and intriguing slides. www.artsboston.org/artsfactor
For 40 years, ArtsBoston aims to connect everyone to MA arts. They have an active membership of 170-plus performing and visual arts organizations throughout Greater Boston. They weigh in with serious analysis and collective data and are a resource for best practices and collaboration. Last fall, GMG announced a podcast webinar from the Massachusetts Cultural Council on how to build audiences using ArtsBoston Audience Initiative which you can find on the MCC site.

Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update

We had a nice time at Visiting Scientist Day at O’Malley Middle School on Friday. Five 45 minute classes of sixth graders. We brought salamanders, frogs, turtles and snakes. Sam Bevins took the day off from Gloucester High to do the presentaion, and he’s really good at it. Extra help from sixth grader Sam Ciolino. Thanks guys.
Got home to find Gretchen, one of our bull snakes had laid nine eggs. They are now in the incubator at 79F. for about 70 days. Evilyn, our female white-lipped python looks quite gravid (snake talk for pregnant). Hope to see eggs soon. A couple of our other snakers are starting to look like they might be eggy too.
Met with Eric and Brendan from the Green Team at Manchester/Essex Regional High School last week. It looks like we might get two students next school year to help with all manner of CAVPT activities.
Meanwhile… Nick Taormina and I have been checking our turtle traps on Essex County Greenbelt property every day for about three weeks, where there is a record of a Blanding’s Turtle (Threatened Species in Mass). It was kind of a bust, we only found one turtle- a ten inch snapper. But there my be more we can do there. Gotta check with ECGB, Fish and Wildlife and a herpetologist buddy of mine. More on that later.
Meanwhile…we have a show to do:
Saturday June 14, 2014 3pm
Snakes of New England and the World- one hour live animal presentation
Lincoln School: Hartwell Pod B
We need volunteers. Please get in touch if you can help with the show. Or… if you’re in the hood, check it out. There is a suggested donation of $5 or $15 for a family of 3 or more. We’re going to try our best to make it worth it.

Linda rae castagna Meets Christopher Anderson
It was a pleasure meeting writer/teacher Christopher Anderson in his new store on Main Street, Eastern Point Lit House. We learned all about him from his wife Michelle over dinner at Duckworth’s the other night. What a valuable concept in this day of literary weaknesses. There are writing workshops for all ages and abilities, public editor for a wide variety of writing projects, proofreading, author and manuscript consultation and coaching, small press books, and countless other offerings. Wish we had Eastern Point Lit House near our home. And Alexandra’s Bread right next door. It is a full service literary center. Christopher Anderson and Jenn Monroe are co-founders. We wish them great success and all who follow. www.easternpointlithouse.com
Magnolia Library’s Art Show
We plan to make this one bigger and better!
Last Year’s Show Was a Great Success. We plan to make this one bigger and better!
The Magnolia Library Center’s 37th Annual Art Show will be held on the weekend of July 11-13, 2014.
This event is open to the public and receives a large amount of publicity. Past shows have been well attended and successful for many artists.
As you may know, this is one of the library’s largest fundraisers. For the past few years we have been lucky enough to have received some donated art pieces to raffle off during the show.

Brooke Welty Provides a Newcomer’s View of Gloucester in the List Form You People Crave
Must Read From FOB Brooke Welty Over At Da Clam
Brooke Welty is the Clam’s Chief Marketing Executive which has a hefty paycheck of “nothing” and is responsible for trying to get us more than 4 twitter followers with her elite social media skills. In her virgin offering to the Clam, she explains what she has learned so far as a newcomer to Cape Ann.
- Gloucester is a very old town, with very old roads. The roads will make every effort to destroy your shocks, and your spirit. Also, Grant Circle is pretty much Thunderdome. Equip your car with some weaponry, spikes, and something which shoots flames, and you’ll be all set.
This should be sufficient. “Should”.
Gloucester is also is full of terrifying lawless zones known as “intersections.” These include the confluence of Railroad, Maplewood and Prospect, marked by a big green buoy (I think?) which looks like someone haphazardly jammed it into the road, leaving the city planners…

Random Scenes From the Dock- Captain Tom Is Cranky
Mr Happypants isn’t having such a good day.
Whitey
WHITEY BULGER PIGEON-
Looking across the parking lot at the dock I saw what looked like a white seagull bopping back and forth in the parking lot. Upon further inspection it was this pigeon. Note the white hair/feathers on its talons (is that what you call them when they’re on a pigeon, or do you call them feet or something else?) Talons sounds a little too aggressive for a white pigeon but WTF do I know about pigeons?
