Corporate Communications Director at American Airlines, McGlashen is a self-described soccer fan, airline enthusiast, and voracious reader. He is the former president of the 55,000 member Flight Attendant’s Association and lives in Tempe, Arizona.
Recently my husband and I stopped for cocktails and a light supper at Foreign Affairs in Manchester. It was our first visit and we’d love to come back for brunch during daylight hours to take some brighter images. I had the delicious rangoons and my husband the hearty burger.
We weren’t planning on dessert, but the house-made orange mandarin upside down cake, with homemade vanilla ice cream and salty caramel sauce sounded just too good to pass by, and trust me, it was! The cake was sweet (but not too sweet) and moist, and the salty caramel sauce the perfect counterpoint to the creamy ice cream. Hats off to the Foreign Affairs pastry chef–she really knows her stuff!

I’ve been looking at old slides and the one attached reminds me of your wonderful work. Bob took this photo of me peering through the butterfly panel at the Museum of Natural History in London, 1971. And although we’d much rather see butterflies in the wild, this display was quite memorable.

At dead low tide on Saturday, just off the shore of Coffins Beach, in an area that has seen significant erosion in recent years, a mystery has revealed itself. The remains of a boat hull approximately 16 to 20 feet in length has emerged from the sand; its ribs, uniformly truncated and buried until now, reach to the surface like hands from a watery grave. From where I stand (I am not appropriately dressed to make a close inspection) I cannot see any trace of the keel, which apparently remains interred. From whence has she voyaged and who knows of her loss? Please help me continue this story.

Tomorrow (SUN) morning at 9:00 A.M., on Aurelia Nelson’s 104.0 FM radio show Curtain Up, Peter gives us a rundown of Gloucester’s early Summer event highlights — yes, we know Summer doesn’t begin astronomically until the solstice (June 21 at 6:51 A.M.) but it’s sunny today, so we’re gonna push the season and call it Summer.
The cool thing about listening to a radio show like Curtain Up is that you don’t have to be sitting down at the computer to find out what’s going on. You could be cleaning the house, weeding the garden, driving, cooking breakfast … or just sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee … relaxing.
Get up early tomorrow (9am is 0-dark-hundred for us) and listen in so when your friends ask, “What is there to do up there in Gloucester?” you’ll have ready answers at the tip of your tongue. Then, for last minute updates, you can always check our live music schedule here.

Our new interactive fisheries exhibit, “Think Tank”, opens on June 8th, World Oceans Day! Maritime Gloucester has purchased a large, interactive, multi-touch table that is equipped with an integrated PC and supports animation, video, audio, photographic data and educational games. Community members, visitors and students will be able to play an interactive, animated game on the table in which they will seek to influence the size of a fishery population based on a variety of factors. The exhibit is designed to welcome all to the table to have a conversation about the challenges one faces when managing fisheries. Click here for full info.
